… i wont touch this FIRST!
what the hell is a BP?
yeah, sorry.
do you live under a rock?
maybe he does… and the view above has gotten dark and tarry for some inexplicable reason.
Heard of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? British Petroleum (BP) is responsible for it.
Oh you mean the company that has US majority ownership, not to mention Transocean and Halliburton – both US companies?
No one is insulting England by mentioning the name of the country, idiot
Let him/her have his/her Brit rant, not all Brits realize that British Petroleum is just the name of the company and where it’s incorporated, rather than what country has the most stake in it.
Hah. British rant? American idiocy, more like. BP changed their name in 2001. The only reason you think it is called British Petroleum is because Obama is calling it.
BP didn’t “change” their name, they shortened it.
Kinda like Kentucky Fried Chicken calls themselves KFC now, but it doesn’t really change the name.
By the way: 40% British ownership and 39% US ownership… yep, it’s a British company.
Except that here in Kentucky, we’re very proud of our chicken
When we spill oil, we do it in people’s arteries!
Actually, Utah. Wikipedia says: “Born and raised in Henryville, Indiana, Sanders passed through several professions in his lifetime.[6] Sanders first served his fried chicken in 1930 in the midst of the Great Depression at a gas station he owned in North Corbin, Kentucky. The dining area was named “Sanders Court & Café” and was so successful that in 1936 Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon granted Sanders the title of honorary Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his contribution to the state’s cuisine. The following year Sanders expanded his restaurant to 142 seats, and added a motel he bought across the street.[7] When Sanders prepared his chicken in his original restaurant in North Corbin, he prepared the chicken in an iron skillet, which took about 30 minutes to do, too long for a restaurant operation. In 1939, Sanders altered the cooking process for his fried chicken to use a pressure fryer, resulting in a greatly reduced cooking time comparable to that of deep frying.[8] In 1940 Sanders devised what came to be known as his Original Recipe.[9]
The Sanders Court & Café generally served travelers, often those headed to Florida, so when the route planned in the 1950s for what would become Interstate 75 bypassed Corbin, he sold his properties and traveled the U.S. to sell his chicken to restaurant owners. The first to take him up on the offer was Pete Harman in >>South Salt Lake<>UTAH<<; together, they opened the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" outlet in 1952.[10] By the early 1960s, Kentucky Fried Chicken was sold in over 600 franchised outlets in both the United States and Canada. One of the longest-lived franchisees of the older Col. Sanders' chicken concept, as opposed to the KFC chain, was the Kenny Kings chain. The company owned many Northern Ohio diner-style restaurants, the last of which closed in 2004."
Someone please tell me how the name of BP transitioned into a lesson on the origins of Colonel Sanders.
ARE WE SERIOUSLY HAVING A DISCUSSION ABOUT KFC?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I’m stoned and the nearest KFC is 40 mins away!!!!!!!!!
Did you just cite Wikipedia?
Yeeah! =D *high five*
LOL well said
just a maths note. from your figures 40% british 39% US, that makes it 40% British 60% international. … International Company
Just a maths note. From your figures, you failed to notice that it is 40% British AND 39% US (79% total), that makes it 21% other countries…nice try, though.
really? US doesn’t count as non-British then? obviously, then, it can’t go into the international category. great math indeed.
Not owning a majority of the stakes doesn’t mean that you don’t have the largest stake in the company. This means that the most influential member of the board is the UK. The US isn’t far behind though and let’s face it, ever since George-Tony duo it’s not a huge leap from US to UK in the view of the international community. Both countries are run by idiots and are equally inferior so let’s stop fighting over which one is worse.
he made a joke you know cuz the US outsources everything… and just for the record im american
My apologies for being an American idiot. It’s been called British Petroleum for so long, I guess the name just stuck. Even so… it’s still incorporated in Britain. Don’t be a British idiot, either, please =)
no one is trying to insult england, idiot
on another topic, why te hell does bp dare to raise their gas prices after all this and go to a yot race?!?!?
I think maybe you are the idiot. Britain and England are not the same thing.
Also, its yacht. YACHT. Gosh learn to spell.
Lol. Yot.
Well, it’s spelled yacht; but it’s pronounced throat-wobbler mangrove.
… England is only ONE of the countries in Britain… You forgot to mention Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. (Tom Jones, Loch Ness Monster and Leprechauns..?)
whales doesn’t want to part of Britain. so i prefer to think of them separately.
Whales are mammals. Wales is a country.
Northern Ireland is’nt part of Britain, the UK consists of Britain and Northern Ireland
If it has majority US ownership then is it only the British are having a cow over the lowered stock value and possible loss of dividends? You don’t here that kind of talk over here.
… then *why* is it only the British are …
40% of BP shares are owned by US entities.
Besides, this could have happened to any company drilling for oil. Nobody would have been prepared for the amount of methane that was trapped with the oil.
But it’s SO SAFE, that’s what George was telling us the last 8 years how stupid it was not to have those companies in harsher conditions under less supervision in Alaska’s wildlife reserves… Again, 8 years of gutting the departments responsible for being ready and for making sure this stuff doesn’t happen lands on Obama’s lap.
you do realize the well is STILL not capped. It’s going on a month of 24×7 oil gushing into the ocean.
Just wait until hurricane season when it hits New Orleans and finishes it off with flooding and fire. This is going to be a very, very bad year before it’s over.
I live in Mobile, AL and the beaches from Panama City, FL to Venice, LA have been impacted by this spill. ALL of us along the Gulf Coast are worried about hurricanes this year. New Orleans is only one city on the coast and it won’t be “finished” off by “flooding or fire”.
As far as safety is concerned there are several wells just like this one in the gulf. There are several reasons this disaster occurred. Had the proper procedures been followed, this whole thing could have been prevented. Flow alarms started going off at least 2 hours before the explosions.
The only “anti-British” sentiment I have seen or heard is on here. We all know the British government had nothing to do with this spill. As far as BP not standing for “British Petroleum” is an argument of Semantics.
I live in Atmore, AL, an hour away from the beach. It has had a tremendous impact even this far inland. We DEFIANTLY don’t want another hurricane!!!
right any company. bp’s drilling broke over 200 laws. the next in line is shell with 9. it could happen to anyone but bp had by far the best chance of having it happen to them.
Okay, so here’s the real deal. BP used to be called “British Petroleum” and also “BP”. It was originally owned by the British government. It was privatised many years back. In recent years, BP changed its name to uh… BP, except this time the letters BP no longer stood for anything (they did sort of play with the idea of being Beyond Petroleum, but didn’t formally change it). So there’s a bit of confusion. There used to be a company called BP which stood for British Petroleum and now there’s a company called BP which does not stand for anything.
It is a publicly traded company that is not owned in whole or in part by the British government. In fact, a slim majority of its stock-holders are now American.
What is of concern to the British people is the effect on its pension fund. When BP became privatised, it carried over the pension liability for those who worked for it when it was a state-owned firm.
Whilst investors may be a bit grumpy at the idea of losing out on share dividends, ultimately they’re fine about it, given the nature of the accident and the level of responsibility of BP. But the pension fund members are concerned about losing out due to something that was nothing to do with them and did not happen during their tenure with the company. In which case, the British government may have to step in to make up any shortfall.
What is particularly annoying to British people is that many American media commentators and reporters still refer to the company as British Petroleum and somehow suggest that it is the fault of Britain, when the company has not been owned by the British government, British people or had a majority ownership by British stockholders in quite a long time.
What is galling is just how readily certain Americans have been to turn on the UK and blame them for this. Britain has spent a huge amount of money, suffered a loss of respect on the world stage and has been the victim of several terrorist attacks as a result of supporting America in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These wars were never popular with the British people and the very real cost of them has been quite difficult to bear. So instantly jumping on the chance to beat us with a stick over something that was patently nothing to do with us and much more to do with a lack of US government oversight, does somewhat piss us off.
To be fair, I haven’t seen Obama call it anything other than BP and the name change (that’s barely a name change) is rather confusing. But I’m sure we’d all appreciate a little research and a little forethought when an international company has a major accident in the US, before rushing to blame your only real allies on this planet.
I’m sure this post would have sounded really hot if you were to say it aloud in your British accent.
That said, I as an American quite enjoy blaming the UK for stuff, we as a nation are better than you as a nation, or a kingdom, or whatever it is exactly that you are, I look forward to blaming you guys for other things in the future. As for the wars bit, you guys are just nostalgic for your days of colonization and world domination, but I can’t say I blame ya, can’t stay pissed at British people too long even if we are better than you in every regard, the accent is just too hot.
Need any help onto your high horse, m’lady?
/thread
Can’t get any higher than yours so best not to try too hard.
Ahh don’t worry, she won’t be able to afford her guaranteed triple heart bypass when it comes.
wow….. you do realize that it is people like you who make all of the rest of us look like idiots? why do you think all the countries in the world hate us? grow a pair (yes jenny that means you) and admit that we could possibly be at fault here.
typical american
I know, right?
I guess I’m the only one that saw the blatant sarcasm in this…
lol no… but it certainly appears that way.
thank you i was just about to say that.
Agreed.
How do you suppose that Brits are any better than Americans? We are all one people. Geography doesn’t make any one person or nation (and they are a nation) better than another, nor money, nor skin color. Just because the company was once British Petroleum, doesn’t mean we can blame them now. It’s an international company, meaning every nation involved may share he blame. So, i say right on Britain! and thank you for fish and chips, Harry Potter, and the use of “bloody” as a curse word.
Not to mention Guiness. XD
i think you’ll find that guiness is from Ireland
Thanks for writing a post that is actually informative, useful and even handed. This is one of the few times I’ve learned anything from a forum post.
I think that this is the best writing I have seen in a while.
The reason people in the US are so eager to blame Britain is because they’re tired of being blamed for every little thing that happens.
Transocean is a South Korean company.
The British attitude that Barack Obama is to tough on BP is appalling. Honestly, every 24 hours there is an extra 60,000 barrels of oil sprung into our oceans, devastating our Gulf’s ecosystem. You Brits complain about your ruined pensions, and yet claim that it is a U.S company. If so, why is it that only the Brits complain about BP’s stock failure? Try to imagine the situation from an American standard (here the public complaint is that President Obama is not furious enough about this). A foreign company knowledgeably drills a sub-par well in our gulf. The well bursts, and the company is oblivious on how to stop it, when it had prior knowledge to the risks it was taking by drilling an unsafe well. Now we have BP concentrating more on its PR rep then the spill it created. And at this very moment, oil is still gushing. BP is deserving everything its got and has coming, and then some. Stop complaining about your damn pensions, you shouldn’t have invested in an evil oil company. No one in the U.S had even thought of blaming the British until they came out and complained about how we shouldn’t make BP pay for the damage it created. Ridiculous. Also, Robert Greene. Oh, and Algeria, that’s fairly embarrassing.
Actually Britain still has majority ownership about 45% and US about 35% but yeah nobody insulted Britain its a cool country actually bit chilly in winters but the daily tea breaks help with that.
i think, i hope, BP will pay for it (and it’s true, it’s justice) but we are all togheter the responsibles, because we want faster cars, better mobile phone, beautifull bathrooms, bigger tits, etc etc. i am so sad when i hear mr. obama speaking: “…BP will pay all the economics damages…”. it’ not the money the real problem, money is paper printed by private institutes who gains in that
Wow, what an incredibly confused set of assumptions here. BP is putting $20 Billion in escrow with our government for the payment of damages.
The American dollar is not privatized, it is issued by the Government. It is controlled by the Federal reserve bank, which is kind of a quasi-independent national bank that has to answer to the Federal Government (short answer, I know it’s a little stranger than that)
I think BP drilling in the Gulf was an environmentally sound thing to do given that transportation accidents with tankers are far more frequent and harmful. Heck, if we would allow them to drill closer in shore, or in ANWAR, or Colorado, the risk would be reduced even more
I agree that we, as a species, need to take care of our planet. However, the desire for “Bigger, Better, Faster, More!!!” is an extension of a natural drive to want to make it better for our descendants.(read darwin) Add social interaction and you get Economics (Wealth of nations, it’s based on observational evidence, not wishful thinking like Marx or Keynes). Leaven the Drive with common sense and a little long term thinking and we’d all be better off.
One correction to your statement. The escrow acct will be held by a “third party”, controlled by neither the gov or BP. I agree with everything else, but asking an oil company to think “long-term”, that’s not profit oriented, is (in my humble opinion) asking for a miracle.
Except there is public record and company reports showing BP consistently cutting cost by sacrificing rig safety to well below their policy standards. It wasn’t an “act of God” or random accident, it was a preventable fault. They have tape of a rig foreman screaming at superior that he had told them this would happen and they ignored the risk (http://billionaires.forbes.com/quote/0fd4cdwgesekZ?q=BP+p.l.c.)
BP gambled with cheaping out on safety, and they lost. They must now pay the cost of fixing the spill. They should also be held accountable for the pensions. Every executive that is found to be on record for having approved the cuts that led to the spill should be fined until all the money they owe is paid. I hope they cap the spill before even oil executives can’t cover the cost
OH! thanks! hahaha lol i get it
I blame the jews.
I blame the rat dogs.
Who doesn’t
Lmao. it’s okayy i though BP stood for Black People. lol. sorry.

-Kenna.
i think it means beer pong broo
Petrol all over Louisiana, does it tell you something ?
enough lube that palms and bums should be well lubricated!
Lulzinator, if you weren’t serious, I can only tell you : you are winrar.
reply buttons, know about it
Although the disaster is terrible, this joke provided major laughs!
Good, indeed.
But where is Mc Donalds?
BP – taste the rainbow
X|
Land should be titled “Area Charles Woodson Covers”
For the record, the Earth’s surface area is 510072000 km^2, and the oil spill is on the order of 10000 km^2. It’s a disaster, but it’s not a new continent.
your argument will be invalid in 1 year
Your argument will be invalid in 1 year
c-c-c-combo breaker
Lol Black People
Finally, an original and funny chart!
That much of the earth is covered by Bird Poop? Wow, I must be down on my quota. Time to get busy…
hmmm yes :3
i thought that BP is the black pearl
You’re really exaggerating the significance of the oil spill. It’s called “oil” anyway; not “BP”.
That depends if BP are laying claim to it the second it emanates from the well; then it really is British Petroleum!
Wow, BP must have a corporate Headquarters the size of China!
This attempt at humor would have been less of a failure if you weren’t stupid enough to associate population with size. Use a country like Russia or Canada, they’re way bigger than China. Dumbass.
Yeah, seriously dude. There are very strict rules when you’re being hyperbolic with a size comparison. You must use either the largest country (Russia) or second largest (Canada). The third largest (China) is totally out of the question. If you go smaller than #2, nobody will even understand the nature of your joke.
swoon! sarcastic, will you marry me?
According to Time magazine, part of the blame on the oil spill goes to any American who drives a car that runs on gasoline. Our greatest mistake was drilling for oil in the first place.
Yeah. I wonder how the writers of that article got home after finishing work that day.
But wait, the production of plastics used worldwide, development into better safety parts and containers and even the use of gas, TOTALLY just the US. Thanks for sending US your rejects and suppressed, your ill and inferm, heck even your business and technology.
We just drive around, head in the clouds wasting gas going to work so that we can buy more oil from the ground just to waste it some more.
Pick up wikipedia sometime, read up who designed the computer your using and how many different cultures/people designed the device. The hours spent together so that you, as the end user, could post on this satirical graph using more technology that was produced by diverse people, and blame it on another group of humans.
Totally our fault since for a few ages we used the most, yet slowed down almost immediately for green products. Yup, America is to blame for oil. Not the people who think that oil-gas is the only way to go for locomotion, not the people who are in the bleachers for Big Oil rooting them on and profiting off of it. Just this other group of Humans for which you possibly have no connection.
Blame US, go ahead! we’re already forgetting what you have said and moving on, this one person is just going to thumb it up and tell people to laugh at the comments. We all will gladly just point fingers randomly each day while still cleaning up the mess. Doing the dirty work while taking it from behind. That is an America you probably don’t see, we take blame and get yelled at while still doing what others can’t or won’t do.
No i won’t say “our soldiers are out there fighting so YOU can blog” but then again you will just say “if it wasn’t for America, this war wouldn’t be happening”. Walls are built before any logical and calm response is given.
We as a planet are responsible for this mess, we use items every day from birth to death, that use plastic or other forms of crude oil from beginning to end. The process to make those items was developed by us as a race to better our own. Blame Humans.
Said Before the trolls hit this response.
BRAVO….Well said!
You, sir or ma’am, are undeniably one of the most intelligent, level-headed people on the internet. Thank you for showing me that I can and should still have SOME faith in our race. I honestly don’t think anyone can post a better comment on this thread. To you, I say thank you and bravo. If only everyone could remain as calm and logical as you. We could all stand to take a leaf from your book.
Lolz you talk funny!!!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHA
and BP made BILLIONS in profits selling that oil, but didn’t put that money back into safe and secure operations.
This has been the problem with “right” social order for a while. The profits from this well and others all went into executive pockets for years. And damn the government for expecting money spent on safe operation and prevention of pollution. Now it’s the GOVERNMENT’s job to step up and fix the mess because the company that spilled the oil has no means capable to fix it. period. In raw property damage there is about to be Billions, more than the last hurricanes. Let alone the damage we won’t “see” beneath the ocean as hundreds of square miles of wildlife is killed off. They are not being penalized for the full amount of destruction because nobody “owns” he ocean, so they can’t be sued for that damage.
This idea that external damage like this is “free” to big business is a key problem in keeping the world habitable and a key problem of American style capitalism.
La BP è responsabile del disastro e deve pagare i danni provocati non solo agli USA e gli Stati del Golfo, ma all’umanità
wow this is stupid
come on bp, i got stocks, i want world domination, hahahahahah
Social commentary For The Win!
This is great in such an awful way.
Really, I don’t know if I love or hate this.
Thanks for being bold an posting this.
Too much bickering, children.
haha Britain sucks.
I love how this joke has a bunch of people spiraling out of control in some kind of stupid argument. enjoy the joke! Americans and Brits are stupid alike so stfu
blame it on Black People
LOL, to read the comments is almost funnier than the chart … #loveisintheair
Omygosh… just reading these posts made me glad I made the graph. Thanks for keeping me entertained for hours, guys. ^_^
Hha hahahahah is so fun from now anyone can fish your own fuel
that money gone because of the oil man do what ever it takes to have fresh water forh the fish yeah boy!
i actually laughed out loud at this

You should read more. Its 2.5 million gallons a day, they cut the pipe off that was kinked. The reason it is not being capped is because they will loose the rights to the well if its capped, so they drill two more holes to tap into the well and they can still suck it dry. Meanwhile, the US food supply id depleated by almost 2 billion pounds per year, the gulf is now toxic and unfishable. BP said they would pay for damages, is my shrimp and fish prices that are going to go through the roof a damage or not, are they going to suppliment the economic damage that is coming down the road. Or is this another “accident”. That may or may not be another piece of straw until we submitt to the NWO, which will fix everything. Hmmmm
Solution? Eat tilapia! It’s kosher AND not tainted by oil.
the verbosity triggered by the pie graphic is akin to the oil leakage itself, out of control, toxic, and ultimately a regretful display of our species.
lol Humans, so silly with their national pride and need for blame.
Blaming is just saying “Well I didn’t do it so I shouldn’t have to clean it.” Instead of figuring out who to blame, we should all be thinking of ideas of how to clean it up.
PROTIP: This isn’t even correct.
lol
You idiots… It has NOTHING to do with either America nor Britain… Its just the companies fault and nothing else. They were warned that there was a problem and they ignored the warnings for too long and now this is what they get for it. Just leave it at that. (And the Brits are awesome peeps, leave ‘em alone.)
AHAHAHA
Firs of all let me tell you that I hate how US people refer for themselves as “Americans”… Do you guys own the all freaking Continent?? Don’t think so, It would be nice to see a change on that as well as a change on your stupid way of thinking, blaming US, blaming Britain, blaming BP wtf is all that about?? No one is really thinking about the huge impact this is going to have in our oceans (and since everything in this world is connected then in all of our lives too)
Feel so bad for people that still can not see the all picture and forget all the “I am from xxx and therefore I’m better” bs and start looking to everyone just as human beings and how we are the ones who have to take care of this perfect fragile little thing called Earth
First of all, we are Americans, maybe not the only Americans, none the less still American. We never claimed to own the whole continent and we can’t really call ourselves United Statians, doesn’t sound right. Second, you are reading into this all wrong. It is not about blame at all, its about fixing the problem. You are right, it IS having a huge impact on our Earth, therefore it will take an immense amount of money, time, effort and manpower to even attempt to clean up this mess. The problem is all of these things are valuable commodities that companies, nations, and all sorts of organizations are going to have to give away to the effort. People are just trying to figure who is responsible for what. I wish we could do the whole hippie humans save the Earth thing, but unfortunately we are all human, so the world will never work like that.
What is BP, what is it’s link with land and ocean??just wondering?
BUT WHO WAS OIL!!!
One should be required to take an IQ test before posting anywhere on the internet. This thread is ridiculous.
Threads like this are what make the Internet fun.
Just to clear things up (unlike BP) you’re all idiots…
England is a country in Britain… If Britain is majority owner then yes technically its our fault, but i don’t see anyone pointing the finger at whoever was in charge of the ship…. as for the discussion of KFC that ensued from one persons comment about the origins of company names, what a pointless waste of time and energy that was.
This board could have been so much simpler with just a “lol” at the pie chart and maybe a “that is so true”
Have fun with your squabbling, i’m going now, to be a man.
don’t have a cow, man
@American: First of all, pick up a dictionairy and discover what the word “American” means.
Secondly, no one here is saying that just by saying “American”, that EXCLUDES everyone else that is not a straight out born white-American; their just saying whoever LIVES in the US, is American. This can be anyone from white, to dark skin to the wonderful Mexicans that live here as well (and yes, most of my friends are the later two).
So stop trying to stand on a soap-box and give a load proclamation before reading the messages before yours and THINKING about them first… In the US, EVERYONE living here is considered “American”; just so long as you actually live here.
And I agree with JP, i’m leaving to let you fools enjoy your squabbling; I’m off to be a better person than either of you wil ever be apparently.
Wow… XD just realized I misspelled a LOT in there… See what I get for coming back here and getting annoyed with everything and try to type at stinkin 7:00 AM in the morning, effects the grammer skills. -.- Sorry folks, but you get what I meant…
It’s a human error brought about by human failings. I fail to see how being British, American or any nationality would have prevented the spill from occuring if those concerned were incompetant enough anyway. BP is a private company, so by all means blame the company and the owners (whatever nationality), I’d be pretty pissed off if a private company had ruined an eco system just off Dover but don’t have a go at Britain simply because the it’s part of the company’s name. Just see the event for what it is and work towards cleaning it up and learning from the mistakes, instead of hurling insults at each other.
This is the most clear-headed comment i have read on here, and it is the last comment i see posted! Seriously, everyone. Go outside and play or something instead of lining up to give your two-cents on a topic most of you know too little about, or honestly probably dont even care too terribly much about. Our environment is sacred, its the most nonrenewable resource we’ll ever have. Let’s try and dig ourselves out of this hole and clean up our act. And yes, i realize how many cliches i used in that post. You get the idea.
alaskan exon valdez spill years ago still impacting world that’s just a small alarm of what bp’s spill willimpact this is scary
Wabaku.
I just want to say that I don’t care whose fault it is, just fix the problem. Bitching & complaining about who did this & who did that doesn’t solve anything. Just get out there, cap the damn thing & stop the oil from draining out into our ocean. It’s the beautiful creatures living in the ocean that are suffering more than the share-holders’ pocket books. P.S. I have dual citizenship in the US & Great Britain. I love everyone! <3
I just think it makes a refreshing change to see the oil invading America
Drug war… Iraq war… BP spill = just dessert
Seriously? Wtf. How is oil anywhere good?
All of you assholes are seriously annoying me. It IS BP’s fault, along with the MMS, oil IS NOT GOOD. WTF. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM. But everyone seems to be more concerned about their geographical location.
F U BP!
