  1. 8E says:

    Ah America… *sigh*

  2. Iris says:

lol in my country is the exact opposite ;p

  3. Aeno says:

It could have just been named ‘America’.

    • toria says:

UK is about the same. Pick up a Radio Times (it’s a TV guide) and look at the description for a film shown on TV. You can guarantee that a violent film (i.e. Aliens) will have been “cut for language”. WHY?

By the same token, a movie will have an 18 (R) rating if someone says the F word, or boobies are shown. I can’t remember the film, but I saw one that was rated 15 that was really bloody. The violence rivaled that of action/horror movies, but was only a lesser certificate because of the lack of sex or “rude” words. -.-

      • JuliaJolie says:

Don’t forget that (at least for a while anyway, but I was too young to appreciate it) certain movies are given a PG for non-sexual nudity. Ever seen Room With A View? That was an eye-opener. Watched it in the US when I was a kid with some very religious relatives. My parents thought it was hilarious when I got back and told them :/

  4. Sanketsu says:

Could take this same graph, take out on tall bar, name the remaining one marijuana, and the rest other drugs and it would still work.

  5. Duckodile says:

This has incensed me about American culture for quite some time… when some random Julia Roberts movie with absolutely nothing going on but a stressed out mom dropping a few F-bombs gets the same movie rating as Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto”, you know something is awry.

I love how “Heavy Rain” got rated 18 by the PEGI but got away with a 16 from the German USK (which is normally much stricter and requires censored versions of most violent games for Germany)… quite likely because of the involvement of boobs.

  6. The death grip says:

    How ironic.

  7. jigglypuff says:

    the american schyzophrenia

  8. AL says:

actually they curse on tv now

  9. dark shadow rogue says:

no porn in tv but the strange thing is that the usofa produces mor porn than the rest of the world combined – and that us girls are easy.

    • toria says:

Lol, that’s quite true. When you censor something it somehow is more desirable.

The thing is, I can understand why mainstream television would censor porn, as it’s supposed to be titillating and intended for adults. But nudity, “soft” sex scenes that are meant to be lovey in films, even kissing is treated the same way by film censors. That’s what makes me WTF.

  10. Radar says:

I do wish in the states they’d decide Boobs are a treat to humanity not a threat
    It’s even shorter to write!

  11. Redneck_Rebel says:

In what alternate universe does corpses melting not fit within the category of graphic gore?

    • Philip says:

Apparently, the thorough research the scientist who made this graph has preformed lead to the conclusion that the sub-category of “corpses melting” is significantly less censored than the category “graphic gore”.

At least, that would be the explanation if this was a scientific paper.

      • zog says:

Yeah, I guess they should be the same, probably.

Still, I loved this category – I remember watching the first episode of ‘Fringe’ and thinking “Man, I can’t believe they allow this on network TV” It just seemed so excessive.

I must be getting old or something :/

    • R3 says:

It really depends on the situation. A “melting” corpse doesn’t necessarily have to be gory.

  12. rhastaravel says:

In holland you can expose everything … expect bad words/images of the queen :x

  13. NP says:

Haven’t seen a graph on this subject in weeks.

  14. Law says:

    Look out! Sex!

  15. totograph says:

Equal rights for mens and womens bare chests!

    • JuliaJolie says:

To be fair, that is a valid comment, even if you were joking. I’m tired of walking around in the blistering heat and seeing men with bigger boobs than mine just letting them flop around in their own sweat. Why can’t I walk around topless? If boobs weren’t so over-sexualised there would be less sexual abuse. And men would be in their rightful place as peons.

      • toria says:

Even if your last remark is a joke, I’m actually not sure they would be. If men are to be believed, boobs are part of what we can use to hold power over them. XD

But I do know exactly what you mean, I had that thought as well. But it would mean that we’d have twice the amount of sweaty bare chests wandering around. -.-

        • JuliaJolie says:

Well I figured that naturally their brains would stop functioning and they’d have extensive brain damage from numerous slip-and-falls from slipping on their own drool. Then eventually they’d just devolve by the time it was too late for them to acclimate to seeing boobs on a regular basis. By then it would be too late for them to be desensitised. Win!

  16. Watwatwut says:

Bounce your boobies! Get into the swing!

  17. arfarfarf says:

It’s also missing ‘Any corporate logo’ which gets more censorship than boobies and swearing combined – especially on anything to do with Simon Cowell!

  18. nice man says:

Yeah, it’s a damned shame. Nothing wrong with busting out a (preferably female) breast here and there. Europe has the right idea when it comes to nudity.

  19. Hello says:

Aaand this is why America has problems with overly violent and overly sexually frustrated people.

    • JuliaJolie says:

My husband (who’s American, I’m English) watched Bruno the other day and was grossed out. He told me about some of the controversial scenes and couldn’t believe I didn’t think it was outrageous. I told him to look up Eurotrash.

  20. Christina says:

So I was watching Benjamin Button the other day and one of the reasons it was rated PG-13 was smoking… Idk, I just thought that was random and had to get it out.

More in line with this topic: I think America is very strange about censoring nudity. Depending on the situation it’s completely normal and just like drinking, creating all this negativity around the human form does harm society as a whole. Alcohol is alcohol, boobs are boobs, and even genitalia is genitalia. I hope my point is getting across… What matters is the context these “controversial” things are placed in.

I wish I lived in Europe when it comes to things like these…

    • JuliaJolie says:

Well, I’d settle for at least being able to see original UK and European content in the US in their original, intact format! I’m quite p-ed off right now because I finally found a UK sitcom on On Demand in the US and they censored out the word “hand” with the word “job” (Well, the “job” part).

I can’t get my head around what can get on TV over here. I’ll never get used to it. Of course, every bloke I talk to over here is more than happy to get behind a campaign of getting more tits on TV in favour of violence, but that sends such a dodgy message to the public if they’re censoring boobies over blood.

  21. wazzanut says:

    depressing really

  22. zomg a ZOMBIE! says:

Yeah, the media is f*cked up. What I really hate is how video games find violence worse than nudity(or the other way around)… It’s just annoying.
