  1. Trainwreck Chaser says:

Another one should be “They don’t live in a place that has a long and vicious winter” Basically their are any environmentalists that live above Chicago.

  2. Shipoopi says:

    second

  3. Peter says:

I thought at least 2/3 would say because it’s more efficient/saves money.

For example ‘green’ PC hardware generates less heat, needs less cooling, works with more silent fans, works in general more silent. Additionally you won’t hate your energy bill that much.

You can take that for nearly every ‘green’ product.
It’s more efficient and saves your money. And i really do like products that save my money.

    • o-range says:

But I think that fewer people do it out of an informed desire to save money and do good for the environment than they do it in order to be doing something that makes them feel good about themselves. There are people like you, who know what they’re on about, and then there are people like a woman I work with, who wails about pollution and keeping the future clean for her children, who gives everyone a hard time at work for not separating recyclables properly, and who pollutes and litters when she thinks no one’s looking. You don’t save the environment by buying an environmentally friendly mini-van and then drive it around with no one else in it just because once a week you might have to take your kids somewhere.

  4. Andrew says:

i cant tell if this is for environmentalism or against it…its like that audi super bowl ad

  5. papajon0s1 says:

I go into spasms every time I even hear the word “green” now. The movement has become a joke of itself. There’s reasonable conservation and then there’s most of the “green” movement that’s simply pretentious elitist crap. I want the word “green” back. I want to take it back from the idiots and morons whose “green” policies hurt people and cause them to needlessly suffer.

    • Casa says:

Personally, I can’t wait till this fad is over.

Yes, there are people who live an eco friendly lifestyle… most of them live on small farms and kill their own food.

You’re never really going to SEE any green if you live in a flithy city stacked ontop of eachother in an artificial enviroment.

  6. That Guy says:

    Who says “hip” anymore?

  7. marxz says:

I guess that would make my 80+ year old parents the hippest people in Australia… maybe even the western world ….. solar panels, wind turbine … oh yea and the solar hot water system they’ve had for 20 years, all ways driven a compact car (still more green than any of the current hybrids), CFT (though they have used normal fluro tubes for more than 40 years).. and I think they got the compost bins, worm farm, grey water recycling ideas of their parents… oh no wait see that’s the kind of thing people did back pre 40′s anyway … you know all that stupid “reduce reuse repair recycle” green stuff that them depression era folks think was oh so cool of them to do…… feh! who cares if they couldn’t have afforded to do it any other way, that’s just them being 1920′s elitist greenies

I ‘spose there’s something different between real world green and media green… not that I’d know not owning a TV (waste of brain cells and electricity).

    • Zoid says:

Wow! I’m so happy for you!

Do you know how pretentious you sound? Seriously?

How is TV any worse (electricity or brain cell wise) than the internet and computers? I would venture so far as to say that the internet is WORSE.

      • Pastry Chef Jumba says:

Translation: “Uh, buh, buh…NO U!! How dare you deviate from the herd!!”

        • Zearen says:

*Facepalm* The Internet panders to extreme conclusions and sensationalism. It also undermines credibility by forcing experts to argue with anyone who has an opinion. In fact, the Internet has almost more of a herd mentality then television. Now I’m not saying that television is superior to the Internet, I’m simply stating that both have disadvantages. The best way to get balanced information is using a variety of sources.

As for “going green”, is it necessarily a bad thing that protecting our environment has merged with popular culture?

      • Me says:

Havn’t you heard that anyone can post anything on the internet. You have to have a lot of green if you want a tv network. The content is much more controled on television whereas on the internet you can parouse any topic you can imagine, no matter how conspiratorial it is. THE GOVERNEMENT CAUSED 911

    • professor paradox says:

Sorry, I can’t hear you way down here.

Could you come down off your high horse so I can understand you?

  8. Tom says:

I think this graph says a lot more about it’s creator then it does about other ppl. So over 90% of people only recycle because it’s hip eh…..?

    Right…..

  9. dizzl says:

even if people are “going green” for the wrong reasons, at least they are still making less negative impact on the environment.

  10. SigSauer says:

This whole green movement is a good idea, except for the fact that it is based on false information (talking about co2, etc). People stand to make millions, and others billions, off of this. That’s the only reason governments are pushing for it.

But for now, I love burning mah fossil fuels.

    • That Girl says:

… you do realize how bad that sounds right?

    • bigyaz says:

      “…based on false information”

Yes, that explains why 99 percent of scientists who have studied climate change agree that it’s real.

Of course, you listen to Rush Limbaugh, not scientists.
      -

      • Pilgrimman says:

If YOU would listen to scientists, you’d realize that Global Warming is a massive scam, and the temperature fluctuations, etc. (if any) are caused by natural processes. Of course, then there’s the fact that human activity caused the Ice Ages of the past… Oh wait… That was natural processes!

  11. magicjesus says:

    Or they are The Hulk

  12. HistoryMaker says:

To save money should be like 1/2 the graph. My mom turns the heat down to like 60 to save oil. Not because it’s a limited resource but because its expensive.

  13. SKW says:

But does the reasoning behind it really matter if it helps the environment?

  14. Sidd says:

“it’s hip” should read “it’s hype”

  15. william says:

    damn enviro nazis

  16. BRMBug says:

I just do it for the pretty swirly light bulbs.

  17. Starlinguk says:

How about “it’s normal”. In a lot of countries there’s nothing novel or sanctimonious about it. We were recycling stuff 40 years ago. Newspapers went to the Scouts (they sold them to the paper factories for extra cash) and bottles back to the store to get the deposit back. There was even a guy who picked up old clothes. I assume he picked out the best ones to sell as clothes and sold the rest to the paper factory.

  18. existentialredhead says:

How about because the government won’t get off our backs about it?

  19. JuuEi says:

    How I go green:
“I will see I consume as little electricity and water as possible.”
    Translated to:
“I just want to save money”

  20. Travis says:

You know what sure as hell isn’t hip? Using the word hip. The 70′s are over…

    • Brian says:

Please, if you think words go in and out of style you are probably just a little too old to understand. Its actually very FRESH these days to borrow the language of every generation whether for comic relief, to accentuate a point, for lack of a better word, a cheesy pun, hilarious wordsmithery etc. Don’t be a word snob. Maybe you should attack is his content versus the terms he used to convey a point. I just turned 20 and I say hip from time to time. Maybe I’m just one of those word losers who doesn’t know how to talk in style.

  21. NP says:

While I appreciate the effort, I think that the accuracy of this graph is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off.

  22. xzena says:

i go green cuz i care about the environment

  23. ario56 says:

I say that alot of people go green because someone they know is forcing them somehow.

    • Casa says:

      Totaly!

We had this “green” freak in the office and she pulled all sorts of strings to set up recycling, and the use of special cleaners that were less damaging… as soon as she left everyone went right back to the old soaps and tossing all the junk back in the trashcans.

      Makes me giggle.

  24. Maverickxeo says:

‘Green’ products ARE mostly just bought for hype. Most of them cost a lot more than other products, and do a lackluster job compared to the original products they are replacing. Some people are even affected by the ‘green’ products. For example, LED taillights/and traffic lights. They do not produce the heat needed to melt snow and ice, so accidents have occurred, and will continue to occur. Not to mention that the cost to purchase them is substantially higher. A few people have also gotten sick from the ‘swirly’ light bulbs… just a general feeling of discomfort. If I have one on too long, I start to feel a little discomfort.

And as for stuff like ‘hybrids’ and electric cars…

First of all, they cost so much more to make and purchase over regular cars, and get minimal gains over older vehicles (and full electric cars are useless to many people… time span is so short and charge times are insane). Secondly, electric cars run off of, get this, electricity. Where does it come from in most places? Fossil fuels. What about battery disposals?

The ‘biggest’ issue is global warming itself. How exactly can we tell the earth is warming, and its due to CO2? An increase of CO2 can be independent of temperature. Also, the earth has increased/decreased in overall temp several times (Ice ages?) and how can we tell that temps ARE increasing? We have only had the technology to record temps for a few decades.

If global warming was an issue, then current green products do nothing but cost the consumer, shift the energy use, and inconvenience people. In the future, this may change, but I for one will not buy a hybrid for $40 000. Ill keep my vehicles I pay $10 000 for, and get 10-20MPG. (it would take years for a hybrid to barely break even, let along be more cost effective.)

  25. Brian says:

Its your responsibility as an individual not to be needlessly wasteful or destructive. You don’t need recognition. You should just do it. You shouldn’t drive a prius just because you think its the most “eco” freindly option out there and will somehow be recognized as green. Do your research and consider a diesel car too(which are now as “green” as a gas car and far more fuel efficient). Every American (including myself), no matter how “green”, pollutes tremendously when compared to other nations. I don’t care if your car gets 40 mpg. Its the nature of everything about the modernized lifestyle. Not to mention the fact that global warming has been so highly politicized that one side of the fence has an overly acute sense of it while the other denies it completely. Both are stupid. People should learn to critically think instead of assuming they can believe everything they hear and come to a rational assessment.

ps I could be wrong but it seems like most people who drive priuses drive like 10mph over the speed limit on the freeway anyway. Which negates the electric engine operating at slow speeds. In, fact that tiny little engine is probably getting worse mileage than just a traditional compact car at that speed.
