  1. Wow says:

They arent going to close the schools just because it snows an inch.

    • Emily says:

They do when the city isn’t equipped to handle the roads. Here in the deep south, flurries are almost certain to get you a day free of school.

      • Snowman Bob says:

Agreed. West of the Cascades or in the South, 1 inch of snow will shut down every school in the area. In Minnesota or Alaska, 10 inches of snow MIGHT mean you need to leave your house 5 minutes earlier than if it hadn’t snowed.

        • 907 says:

I live in Alaska, and along with that, they only allow about 5 snow days, unless there is an emergency. We had a 5 (I think) day wind storm which went about 100mph, and they didn’t cancel school on any of them.

  2. Pootah says:

They are if you live in Britain.

  3. Friese says:

Closed for the 3rd day in row, if you life in Germany

  4. jackisgreen says:

That ‘weekend’ part needs to be bigger. This entire winter it has only snowed once when it was not the weekend. It snowed yesterday but we didn’t even get any snow until around 7PM.

  5. HongKongCandy says:

It snowed pretty bad Spring Break of my senior year…

  6. Humm. says:

Bah, Americans and their silly day-offs because of snowing… Here I’ve never got to have a day off due to snowing. And it can be like 20 inches of snow if it’s a good winter.

    • DHY says:

You should read the other comments. It looks like anyone from any other country but the US gets a day off in an inch of snow.

      • Churj says:

Ever been to that place north of the USA? It’s called Canada. We measure our snow in centimetres, and we get a whole hell of a lot of it. Schools are rarely closed though.

    • Kit says:

What is this “Snow day” you speak of? Here in Minnesota, it doesn’t matter if there’s 20 feet of snow and it’s -50 out, you’re still going to school.

      • Eric says:

That’s nothing. When I was young, we lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down at the mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.

      • Ziggy Currans says:

Well here in Iowa we have received record amounts of snow this year. Des Moines Public Schools was closed for 6 days, 2 of which were when our finals were supposed to happen. That was a number of days off that hasn’t been attained since the early 1970′s. Carroll School District has had 9 days off. We currently have over 3 feet of snow on the ground. So I totally disagree with this graph, because we are very likely of having a snow day this year.

  7. lmao says:

It snowed where i live on sunday and i didnt go to school monday-today it was all melted on monday

  8. Philip says:

Huh? I don’t get it. It’s a bad thing when it snows while you’re off? Don’t kids these days like playing in the snow any more? I’m a kid (17) and I like it!

    • TimmyMac says:

but if it snows on a school day then school gets canceled… and it always seems to snow on a weekend or break (like 2 hours christmas break started =( in virginia)

  9. kali says:

my school doesn’t get cancelled unless we get more than 2 feet or more… Midwestern winters are NOT fun…

  10. trt says:

in haiti it did not snow but the schools are closed anyway?

  11. catgirl says:

Sigh, I remember when I used to wish for snow days. Now that I’m an adult, I wish for snow to come on weekends because if I have to miss work, I don’t get paid (or I have to use personal time). I feel old now.

  12. deadinfrance says:

No it snows like crazy on MONDAY MORNING when you have to go to work!

  13. FCPS SUCKS says:

well someone CLEARLY lives in Fairfax

    • not today! says:

At least we got today off! And I’m predicting an early dismissal Friday for this weekend’s storm…and perhaps Monday off as well. FCPS isn’t doing too poorly, even with its weekend snows. The extended winter break was nice, too.

  14. ME says:

i live in nashville and we got 7 inches of snow. our school didnt give us even one day off, even in the south they dont care

  15. anon says:

Missing school because of an inch of snow? I get chided for being late even if I had to battle my way through a minus 30 blizzard. :P

    • JC says:

If you read the chart, you’d realize that it says “more than an inch.” Also, like other posters have mentioned, in areas where it doesn’t snow regularly, we aren’t as prepared for it; it’d be a waste of money to be constantly prepared for something that usually won’t happen, such as the two storms this season. Besides, people in VA can’t drive when the roads are dry, so having to be on the roads with these morons when they’re icy and snowy is like signing a death letter.

  16. leffe says:

Here they might close schools if it snows 2feet, wouldn’t bet any money one it though.

  17. HIM! says:

I’m in Minnesota. Give us 8 inches, and we’ll notice… but we still won’t care.

  18. Herk says:

In sweden, schools are never closed in case of snow.

  19. soup says:

Shock news – in parts of the world where it snows regularly, people are more prepared for it.

    • OMG says:

NOWAI! Yes, I wish people would realize that. I’ve lived in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and now DC, and it’s obvious that DC just isn’t prepared to handle snow like Pittsburgh and Cleveland are, because fiscally, it doesn’t make sense to be prepared for something that has little chance of happening. Why should DC prepare for 2 blizzards within a month and a half when that never happens? Of course we’re getting snowed in this weekend! We’re not Alaska.

    • JC says:

Amen soup. But it’s a superiority complex for them to tell us all how much better they are for having to trudge through snow all the time. I’m sure they’re also jealous that they don’t get to have any days off from school due to weather. And for anyone living in Va, especially those of you near DC, you know driving in this is no picnic with the morons we call drivers here…

  20. funkychick17 says:

As a parent, I prefer it to snow on the weekend or on a scheduled day off. Don’t have to worry about making up the day.
Plus, the school officials never win. Cancel and people complain it wasn’t bad enough to cancel; don’t cancel and people complain the roads are treacherous and the kids are at risk.

  21. jzimbert says:

Why the hell is this a pie chart? Bar graph, people!

  22. Kit says:

Pft, oh it’ll snow more than an inch on a school day… if you live 30 miles away from school and it only snows at your house.

    :(

  23. thestashattacked says:

Funny, cos I live in the mountains, and my school district hasn’t had a snow day in about 30 years.

Now we did have an everybody-walked-in-late-because-annoying-girl-who-doesn’t-have-snow-tires-got-stuck-at-the-top-of-the-hill-and-the-busses-couldn’t-get-past-her day.

  24. Tiblet says:

Our kids have been out all week so far and now they are calling for more of it this weekend. I hope they at least get to go for a part day tomorrow so that they remember that school’s not out for the season. I, for one, would be happy not to see anymore of the white stuff until next winter.

    • TJN says:

dude where the hell do you live? im in high school in NY and we havent got one single snow day or even DELAY this entire year!

      • TimmyMac says:

probably somewhere in virginia or north carolina…and no we aren’t having school tomorrow either! lol

      • yay VA says:

Yeah I have a friend who teaches in Shenandoah County, VA, and they had school for the first time all week today, and it was even a 1-hour delay day. Tomorrow’s cancelled, too.

  25. TJN says:

so true. this has happened to me twice this year, and its gonna happen again this weekend.

  26. puffin says:

you forgot “school day you were supposed to go on that awesome field trip that was consequently canceled” Now that really sucks

  27. bleh says:

thats the way its been in northern virginia. there was only one tim ewhen it didn’t snow on saturday or friday >_<

  28. J says:

I live in Pittsburgh… and I’m snowed in at school right now… had to spend the night here… and it’s a Saturday :(

  29. Lorelei says:

Yeah, I’m in PIttsburgh too. We didn’t have to spend the night but left around seven PM. THey aren’t going to close schools because of an inch and the power was out all day! :( if you live in britain they close for 1/4 inch lucky

  30. Lorelei says:

and we only get days off if it’s seriously like in the negative twenties

  31. Yay School! says:

I like how weekends are not considered scheduled off days. Maybe they’re unscheduled?

  32. Ziggy Currans says:

Yet again, here in Des Moines it’s snowing. We’ve received 8 inches in the past few hours, but school isn’t going to be cancelled. Our school board doesn’t know what to do with the 6 days off for the seniors (go 2010!), so they are currently wary of cancelling school. It’s 10:10 pm on Monday, but by 6:57 am on Tuesday, we probably will be cancelled. The best thing is that we always get lots of snow in Iowa, but nothing as much as we have had this season. In 2010 alone, we’ve had over 1.5 feet of snow. As I said before, there’s at least 3 feet of snow on the ground. It keeps melting, but we keep getting more snow and more snow days. You gotta love the Midwest!

  33. John says:

Person that made this obviously has never lived in Iowa

  34. Try living in a real winter state says:

    Cry more?
