No wonder you don’t have any comments.
I believe this is the first graph ever to discuss typos and not have a typo itself.
okay well embarrassingly enough for you, it does. ‘Spelled’ not ‘spelt’
okay well embarrassingly enough for you, they’re both right and both acceptable
However, it is true that ‘spelt’ is not commonly used in American English. That’s probably why it, like ‘honour,’ gets underlined by many spellcheckers.
yeah but who cares about American English. that’s why it’s called English, not American. it’s the Americans who have bastardised our language.
A little late now. You should have won the Revolution if you wanted to have Americans speaking your brand of English. It’s also rather entertaining that you’re knocking ‘our’ English when you can’t seem to grasp the concept of the shift key.
Ah, we just couldn’t be bothered to win it at the time. We had tea that needed drinking.
I’m a proofreader, so it’s kind of in my nature to comment on typos. Ironically, I have dylexia. This makes me infuriated when people use it as an excuse for their own crap writing caused by sheer laziness.
Actually, I also have dyslexia and do editing, proofing and tutoring, so I very much agree with you. But I also don’t think American English has diverged much more than Aussie or Indian…except for that whole ‘u’ thing, but that’s just because we’re more efficient.
What’s really annoying is that most people can use a browser with spellcheck, which will allow you to simply right click the misspelled (sorry, misspelt) word and fix it. (Is ‘misspelt’ not allowed? I don’t have English on my spellcheck.
)
lol loving it! It is pretty impressive some of the time. But in instances (like with my situation now) when people are commenting from work they might not necisarily have spellcheckers in the browser that they are using. And I sure as hell know that I can’t be arsed to put it into word to check first
Also, we lost to the french not you guys during the revolution
(be interesting to see what rants that one starts)
Reply to this until the words get crushed in the wall!!!!

Wow fail XD
Didn’t we throw the tea in a bay in Boston
“Yeah” is an American born word.
“spelt” is a type of wheat and flour.
The typo is there. “Spelt” is not the present perfect form of spell, the word that should be there is spelled.
I just think people don’t really care anymore about grammar, punctuation or spelling.
They don’t care because they’re not corrected at home or at school; the concept of clear communication is, alas, in the throes of a slow and painful death. Soon we’ll have guys running around informing us that bad isn’t actually the opposite of good.
Here comes Newspeak, just 26 years later than predicted.
(’1984′ reference)
WIN
Double-plus good.
Double-plus un-fail
Boy do I agree with you, Orzo! It annoys me to no end that it has become common practice to ask, “Where is he/she/it AT?” I was corrected when I was young and I corrected my children’s speaking as they grew. It makes me wonder why teachers and parents don’t enforce speaking (and grammar) more.
Go watch Idiocracy! It is funny up until you realize that we are well on our way to retardism…
Such a true comment about Idiocracy. You’re right – it’s funny until you realize it’s all going to come true.
So why are so many people correcting others?
Hypocrisy and lolspeak just seem to go together. (really hoping I spelled/spelt ‘hypocrisy’ right)
yeah, you got it
& you win
Have you been on the internet lately?
More people should care about the inability of most Americans to form a complete sentence, which is correct in both grammar and punctuation.
The ones that don’t care are presenting themselves as ignorant and stupid. If they don’t care that they appear retarded, then that’s fine, sad but fine. I reserve the right to make fun of them as much and for as long as I want.
People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. “Spelt” is a past participle. I think you meant “spelled”.
You’re also incorrect. “Spelt” is not a form of the verb “Spell.” It is a species of wheat.
Get it right, the both of you. Egads.
“Spelt” is a past AND past participle form of “spell” just like “spelled”. Chiefly British. Look it up. Mirriam-Webster.com. Well, I guess I’m in the red!
Well, since when did the British know how to speak English?
Merriam-Webster, you mean? OMG, it’s like some weird addiction!
IRONY:
Who misspells the name of a dictionary?
You do realise British English was around long before Amercian English, right?
IT WAS SARCASM
In times like this, I like to use a purpose created word. Sar-chasm n. The wide, gaping hole dividing the people who get it and the people who don’t!
Only people in glass houses should throw stones, provided they are trapped in the house with a stone
So, it’s not just me? Proper written communication was pretty much a given when I was growing up, and then becoming a legal secretary (no, I wasn’t an illegal one previously) made it even more important to be correct. I got an email from my case manager at MI Works, and it was a sad example of a professional not knowing – or probably not caring – about the impression that their lack of concern might make upon anyone.
The ‘a’ in your title should be capitalized.
//I say chart win
An article is not capitalized in a title unless it is the first word. Any title with a capitalized article is incorrect.
It should be “intentionel”.
“intentional”?
Oh no, I did it AGAIN!
You should be “sterilized” so you don’t pass on your “ignorance” gene to the next generation.
Nah, maybe you.
SPELT right? hmm…
you spelled “spelled” rong.
*facepalm*
*facepalm*
*facecaress*
Ohh, yeah.. that feels good.
HA!
I hope you did that intentionally.
no actually they spelt spelt right. See above comments (or if you’re too lazy, it’s a British spelling).
it was sarcasm guys….
You spelled ‘wrong’ wrong.
The wrongness of your ‘wrong” wrong is wrong.
Oh no…my ‘wrong’ is wrong…
…I mean, it’s “āwrongā wrong is wrong” rather than “āwrong’ wrong is wrong. Which would be right.
Actually it would be “correct”, rather than “right”. “Right” is wrong.
Ah, another chart devoted to stinging butthurt that fails to gauge depth of said stinging butthurt.
To all those who think ‘spelled’ is spelled wrong… learn your stuff. Spelt is acceptable and, according to the dictionary on my widgets, Chiefly British.
Who would think that āspelledā is spelled wrong?
haha.. guilty. Sorry, I must correct mistakes. It’s like an OCD thing.
Especially grammar ones. Especially their/they’re/their and it’s/its!
I know exactly what you mean. For me it’s than and then, affect and effect, and accept and except.
Another great offense: You’re/Your
All you morons are missing the point of the chart, and are actually becoming shining examples of what the chart is talking about.
Annoying people online who just love to correct everyone and everything to make themselves feel smarter. Most of you are just racing to see who can use google the fastest anyways. Get a hobby.
That is true Brandi, pretty much they’re all acting like idiots and proving the graph’s point quite nicely.
Hey, SOMEone’s got to do it…besides, I’m insanely bored.
There has to be some reason grammar and spelling were invented.
Must. Resist. Urge. To. Correct. Your. Grammar!
Yeah people to point thoses things out suck. Having said that, the graph that is two above this should say “happens to clothing” not “happen to clothing.” Haha they’re stupid.
…you should talk.
“Yeah people to point thoses things out suck” ????
What a wonderful example of stupidity you typed there!!!!
2 gold stars
Or was he thinking about a kind of ancient grain? (Spelt)
*facepalm*
Dude, read the above comments. It’s a British spelling.
THEIR stupid duh >_>
Correction: It should be “THEIR stupid, duh. >_>”
<.<
(and yes, I am aware of the OTHER typo. I presumed that one was intentional)
Their stupid what?
I really hope this was sarcasm, btw
um, wow… their is referring to something owned by “them”
i.e. their dog, their friend, their lunch
they’re is “they are” and the graph creator here is saying “they are stupid” not talking of a “stupid” that a “they” owns
Yup. The “spelt” was intentional. And it had exactly the affect the writer wanted. You have all been trolled to hell and back.
And Loegria: They do care about grammar/punctuation/spelling- everyone else’s grammar/punctuation/spelling, that is.
Late, I know, but…it’s “effect.”
your dumb, you spelled words wrong.
PLEASE say that was sarcasm, because you did too (and you failed at grammAr as well). If it wasn’t sarcasm, you fail at life.
The OED has three entries for “Spelt” as follows:
1:(n) A species of grain (Triticum spelta) related to wheat, formerly much cultivated in southern Europe and still grown in some districts.
2: (n) A thin piece of wood or metal; spec. a board of a book (OE.), a toe- or heel-plate (dial.).
3: (v) trans. To husk or pound (grain); to bruise or split (esp. beans). Hence {sm}spelted ppl. a.

Sooooo, apparently both American and British dictionaries corroborate this….
Get over yourselves! No one is correct. Move on to a subject worth arguing about. And to the moron that doesn’t care about the English language, WHY ARE YOU TYPING IN ENGLISH? JACKASS!
A little old I know, but, “spelt” is correct. I dislike hearing “spelled” just as I dislike hearing “burned”, “dreamed” because I’m using the having the ‘t’ instead of ‘ed’ as is custom here in Australia for *some* words.
Anyway, this graph is so right. I’m part of the green section unless it’s like “omg di u here da nu guii iz hawt?” then I just think “Haha. They’re stupid.”
Get over it. It’s just spelling…
*sees typo* A TYPO!!!! COMMENT!!!!!!!
Spelt is not a word. THAT is a typo in the typo graph.
EPIC FAIL
