  1. Fabio says:

No wonder you don’t have any comments.

    • that guy says:

I believe this is the first graph ever to discuss typos and not have a typo itself.

      • Aislin says:

okay well embarrassingly enough for you, it does. ‘Spelled’ not ‘spelt’

        • Stupid says:

okay well embarrassingly enough for you, they’re both right and both acceptable

          • mabsba says:

However, it is true that ‘spelt’ is not commonly used in American English. That’s probably why it, like ‘honour,’ gets underlined by many spellcheckers.

            • Stupid says:

yeah but who cares about American English. that’s why it’s called English, not American. it’s the Americans who have bastardised our language.

              • mabsba says:

A little late now. You should have won the Revolution if you wanted to have Americans speaking your brand of English. It’s also rather entertaining that you’re knocking ‘our’ English when you can’t seem to grasp the concept of the shift key.

                • Xenon says:

Ah, we just couldn’t be bothered to win it at the time. We had tea that needed drinking. :P

I’m a proofreader, so it’s kind of in my nature to comment on typos. Ironically, I have dylexia. This makes me infuriated when people use it as an excuse for their own crap writing caused by sheer laziness.

                  • mabsba says:

Actually, I also have dyslexia and do editing, proofing and tutoring, so I very much agree with you. But I also don’t think American English has diverged much more than Aussie or Indian…except for that whole ‘u’ thing, but that’s just because we’re more efficient. :D

What’s really annoying is that most people can use a browser with spellcheck, which will allow you to simply right click the misspelled (sorry, misspelt) word and fix it. (Is ‘misspelt’ not allowed? I don’t have English on my spellcheck. ;) )

                    • Dave says:

lol loving it! It is pretty impressive some of the time. But in instances (like with my situation now) when people are commenting from work they might not necisarily have spellcheckers in the browser that they are using. And I sure as hell know that I can’t be arsed to put it into word to check first :D Also, we lost to the french not you guys during the revolution :D (be interesting to see what rants that one starts)

                  • afkhff says:

Didn’t we throw the tea in a bay in Boston

              • EpicWin says:

“Yeah” is an American born word.

          • zzz..... says:

“spelt” is a type of wheat and flour.

      • afrijapc says:

The typo is there. “Spelt” is not the present perfect form of spell, the word that should be there is spelled.

  2. Loegria says:

I just think people don’t really care anymore about grammar, punctuation or spelling.

  3. Westleigh says:

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. “Spelt” is a past participle. I think you meant “spelled”.

  4. Loegria says:

So, it’s not just me? Proper written communication was pretty much a given when I was growing up, and then becoming a legal secretary (no, I wasn’t an illegal one previously) made it even more important to be correct. I got an email from my case manager at MI Works, and it was a sad example of a professional not knowing – or probably not caring – about the impression that their lack of concern might make upon anyone.

  5. jacobyjd says:

The ‘a’ in your title should be capitalized. :-P

    //I say chart win :)

    • NP says:

An article is not capitalized in a title unless it is the first word. Any title with a capitalized article is incorrect.

  6. The Eric says:

    It should be “intentionel”.

  7. DNE says:

    SPELT right? hmm…

  8. jimmybob says:

    you spelled “spelled” rong.

  9. OrvilleBeddybocker says:

Ah, another chart devoted to stinging butthurt that fails to gauge depth of said stinging butthurt.

  10. YurMother says:

To all those who think ‘spelled’ is spelled wrong… learn your stuff. Spelt is acceptable and, according to the dictionary on my widgets, Chiefly British.

  11. heman says:

haha.. guilty. Sorry, I must correct mistakes. It’s like an OCD thing.
Especially grammar ones. Especially their/they’re/their and it’s/its!

  12. Brandi says:

All you morons are missing the point of the chart, and are actually becoming shining examples of what the chart is talking about.
Annoying people online who just love to correct everyone and everything to make themselves feel smarter. Most of you are just racing to see who can use google the fastest anyways. Get a hobby.

  13. Liz says:

Yeah people to point thoses things out suck. Having said that, the graph that is two above this should say “happens to clothing” not “happen to clothing.” Haha they’re stupid.

    • snonuff says:

      …you should talk.
“Yeah people to point thoses things out suck” ????
What a wonderful example of stupidity you typed there!!!!
      2 gold stars

  14. K says:

Or was he thinking about a kind of ancient grain? (Spelt)

  15. pbean says:

    THEIR stupid duh >_>

    • Xenon says:

Correction: It should be “THEIR stupid, duh. >_>”

      <.<

(and yes, I am aware of the OTHER typo. I presumed that one was intentional)

    • MLD says:

      Their stupid what?

I really hope this was sarcasm, btw

    • erai says:

um, wow… their is referring to something owned by “them”
i.e. their dog, their friend, their lunch
they’re is “they are” and the graph creator here is saying “they are stupid” not talking of a “stupid” that a “they” owns

  16. winternets says:

Yup. The “spelt” was intentional. And it had exactly the affect the writer wanted. You have all been trolled to hell and back.
And Loegria: They do care about grammar/punctuation/spelling- everyone else’s grammar/punctuation/spelling, that is.

  17. Bob says:

your dumb, you spelled words wrong.

    • Xenon says:

PLEASE say that was sarcasm, because you did too (and you failed at grammAr as well). If it wasn’t sarcasm, you fail at life.

  18. Mike says:

The OED has three entries for “Spelt” as follows:

1:(n) A species of grain (Triticum spelta) related to wheat, formerly much cultivated in southern Europe and still grown in some districts.

2: (n) A thin piece of wood or metal; spec. a board of a book (OE.), a toe- or heel-plate (dial.).

3: (v) trans. To husk or pound (grain); to bruise or split (esp. beans). Hence {sm}spelted ppl. a.

    • Dave says:

      spelt 1 (splt)
      n.

      v.
A past tense and a past participle of spell1.

      spelt1
      vb
a past tense and past participle of spell1
      spelt2
      n
(Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Plants) a species of wheat, Triticum spelta, that was formerly much cultivated and was used to develop present-day cultivated wheats
[Old English; related to Old Saxon spelta, Old High German spelza]

Sooooo, apparently both American and British dictionaries corroborate this….

  19. jason says:

Get over yourselves! No one is correct. Move on to a subject worth arguing about. And to the moron that doesn’t care about the English language, WHY ARE YOU TYPING IN ENGLISH? JACKASS!

  20. Ace says:

A little old I know, but, “spelt” is correct. I dislike hearing “spelled” just as I dislike hearing “burned”, “dreamed” because I’m using the having the ‘t’ instead of ‘ed’ as is custom here in Australia for *some* words.

Anyway, this graph is so right. I’m part of the green section unless it’s like “omg di u here da nu guii iz hawt?” then I just think “Haha. They’re stupid.”

  21. Flora says:

Get over it. It’s just spelling…

  22. hi says:

    *sees typo* A TYPO!!!! COMMENT!!!!!!!

  23. Failol says:

Spelt is not a word. THAT is a typo in the typo graph.

    EPIC FAIL
