It used to be that artist wanted to produce albums of material as a whole project and many wouldn’t evan sell singles. Now, so many “artists” just want to have one half decent hook that isreally only intended to sell as ring tones

It used to be that artist did concerts tours to promote the sales of record cuz that’s where they made there money. Touring with a band and all was so expensive, relatively, that they didn’t make much muoney , in fact could loose money on the tour

Just to clarify a few things. First off the little guy (tech, mic operators etc.) do not suffer from illegal downloads. Those people work for sound hall hiring unions and have a set rate for everything they do. They also make their money off the concerts more than the albums and the wages are all clearly marked according to their level in the union. They are paid on a per job basis and may not work for several weeks then work constantly for several weeks. So I would not worry about them.
As far as what the artist meant, you are an idiot if you think that your interpretation is the only correct interpretation there is. All artists will tell you what they were thinking when they created their works, but they will also ask you what you got from it cause it is a matter of perception. What I got from it may not be what you understood it to be….but we can both be correct.
Personally I believe that we should be able to download what we want. All these greedy bands these days want to bitch about rights?!? WTF? I make it a point to never even listen to bands that I hear complain about their rights to my money. I am there to get the music out for you and if you think I should have to pay to do that then you are not a musician, your a greedy bitch that is no better than a dirty politician that steals our contributions to buy a new benz. We used to be able to just record tapes off the radio for free and that is how the music got out to the masses. I have had to give up on bands I thought were great because of there ethics and I hate it but I refuse to promote or even listen to them anymore because of it. (even for illegally free) All this downloading crap has just limited the minds of great thinkers to be stuck in the torment of commercialized crap we are forced to listen to repeatedly on every station. Illegal downloads are the only way the good music they hide from us will get out. I say all bands should fire the record labels and blast everything on youtube… FOR FREE. Ok I think I am done.

its a simple statement, he’s making the point that people who download music illegally don’t feel bad because of how much money music artists make (for all those pricks that don’t get it)
its simple and its funny, do you really have nothing better to do with your life than analyse it and point out that its not mathematically correct?!
and all those people who actually buy music.. wise up, unless u want a signed cd or need to mix records, they’re gona make fk loads of money anyway. only people i buy music from are people that are just starting out cause they actually need it!

Music is culture. I think that it’s the only thing we can all connect to forever. It’s life changing so we want it all, and we will listen to the music we like until the day we die. There’s too much good music out there. It’s saturated. Everyone has a wide array of songs stolen from bands like AC/DC, Caged Elephants, Kings of Leon, 2 Pac, Owl City, Garth Brooks, Beatles, Fratellis, Beastie Boys, Oasis, Cake. Look at how random your iTunes is. Great… Good For You. It’s not about money… It’s about the music.. That’s backwards… It’s about finding the new culture of music and giving them a career. Too many people are music fans and not music lovers. Don’t steal something that will give your afternoon drive meaning. Buy a new artist or someone you really like. And MTV’s ratings were down from music videos. Screw MTV…Way to make our culture so boring… oh wait… we did that.

What if we could just download everything in an instant the week they come out?… I wonder what that will do to movies… and video games…

Well, coming from a person who was in a band on a large record label, when you steal music from smaller bands, it pretty much kills them. We sold something like 8,000 copies in stores like Best Buy and the like, and the label stopped supporting us entirely. They might have wanted to look at the 200,000 copies (or more) that had been downloaded, but no, since it made them no money. We were no longer any kind of money maker, thus dropped, and broke up shortly thereafter from being sick of living for years on gas station food and sleeping in the tour van. I guess there is no moral to this story, since I used to (and still do occasionally) download music illegally as well, but now I’m vigilant about buying music from bands I love (at their shows, since that’s the only way they see ANY money).

I once went to a concert of a band that I already owned the cd. I bought it at the store. Well, I tried to get an autograph, but they were only giving them to people who bought the cd AT THE SHOW. Such BS, I’m downloading illegally from now on and buying the cd when I finally get to see them live.

the next time i hear music in the grocery store, i’ll make sure to stick my fingers in my ears until i find the designated rep of the artist, who must be lurking around the deli or produce section, ready to bust illegal listeners, and pay him or her the fee to take my fingers out of my ears so i’ll be able to legally hear the music and finish my shopping.

I can say that for architecture that although each design is original, should someone copy our design, we have no problem with that, so long as we get credit and we are paid for the copyright. But really even if we weren’t because they modified some small aspects of the building to make it different, we would still be happy knowing our design was popular enough to be copied. If no designs were like this and nobody “stole” an another architects ideas, then there would not be a such thing as Roman Architecture, Gothic Architecture, or Art Deco.

Legally, they have to pay royalties if they sell the music they make. It all depends on who owns it. For example, michael jackson used to own a lot of original beatles songs, so he could sell the rights to it, if anybody wants to use it in a movie they have to pay him, or he can let someone use it for free. A lot of recording artists get screwed out of owning their own music by their record company. Your referring to what, in hip hop, is called “sampling”. They all have to pay, unless they can get it for free or get away with it. I like all types of music, I mean all types. But I definitely agree with you on how unoriginal a lot of rap songs are with the sampling, unoriginal beats and lyrics. I mean just check out MIA’s song paper planes, the guitar is clearly ripped from The Clash note for note and the chorus is basically from Wreckx N Fx, filled with gibberish in between and people love it because it is catchy. I used to listen to a lot of rap when i was in high school and younger, but now I don’t listen to the newer crap because I realized how very little talent some rappers have.

Yeah, not only that but most artists also are getting ripped off by their record labels. Fans that show up to concerts are much more valuable to a musician than fans who just buy the CDs. Fans that buy CD’s are mostly just giving their money to the record label, and hardly any of that goes to the artist. So that’s why I never buy CD’s. There are a few exceptions though, like Nine Inch Nails and Tool, since they own their own record labels. I still don’t buy NIN though since Trent Reznor said its totally cool if people download his music illegally.

this has nothing to do with science, engineering or architecture. stealing ideas in hose fields are usually done for personal gain, wealth and glory, meaning the person who did make the breakthrough doesn’t get what s/he deserves, and the thief will claim that s/he is the one who came up with it, in other words, it’s more of plagiarism. when music is stolen, on the other hand, it’s rarely used for, wealth because who would buy a pirated CD when you could download it? and furthermore the theives, us, don’t claim to have come up with the music, we only want to listen to it without having to bother to pay, but this doesn’t mean what we are doing is moral.
