It’s always warm, but not hot. I was once handed a pair of oven mitts because it was “burning” but that temptation to touch it barehand was too great, then I go to touch it and it’s room temperature!!!

They warn you so you don’t drop it. If they don’t say it’s hot, and it is hot, you might be surprised and drop it. If they do say it’s hot, and it’s hot, you prepare yourself, so you don’t drop it.

It’s pascal’s wager, only with a real chance of dropping it.

I was going to say that graph should be titled “What the waiter secretly hopes you do when he/she warns you that the plate is hot.” Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Personally, I love touching a sizzling hot plate with my nerve-damaged hand and not even flinching because I can’t feel it. Wipes the smirk right off the waiter’s face. Moments of immature and petty triumph come so infrequently…I gotta grab ‘em when I can.
