Wait, what? The intersection between what’s allowed in dorm rooms and what’s not allowed in dorm rooms would be things that are both allowed and not allowed. That doesn’t make any sense.

The posted graph is correct. The two circles are what’s not allowed and what’s present, and the intersection is what’s both not allowed and present.

It is so true! Right now, I have a candle burning in my room, jack-o-lanterns with candles, several open containers of alcohol, an electric blanket, and a lighter. My friend down the hall has all these, plus a cooker/hot plate, and a guinea pig. I probably have some other banned stuff, too, that I just haven’t though of.

The poster thing they always claim is due to fire hazard issues. They also hated those cloth wall hangings where I went to school. No candles, no crock pots (unless you were only cooking water – explain that one to me)… no pets except fish.

My boyfriend told me a story, though, about why the wording was changed in the dorm rules. He once had a friend who lived in the dorms there back when it was worded “only under water pets allowed”. Said friend duct taped a cup with a bit of water in it on the ceiling. Under the rules, they technically couldn’t bust him. He had a cat or a snake or something of that nature.

Jeesh. I’m probably on the most straight-and-narrow of any college student you’ll find, but this is true for me. My dorm has some rules about not covering your wall with too many posters, but I’ve got a lot of posters. I think there’s probably also a rule about food and prescription drugs, both of which I have.

Yeah, they’re really picky, but unless it’s drugs (and maybe alcohol, but maybe not even that), the rules might be on the books, but no one seems to care what you have in your dorm room.

Good question. I don’t think anybody really knows what “decriminalized” actually means. It’s not formally legal but there are no penalties for breaking that law.

In general though, you’re not supposed to have it, but you won’t go to jail for getting caught with it.

It’s sort of like drinking in public. It’s against the law, but all that’ll happen is the cops will pour it out and send you on your way.

I went to U of Toronto in Canada.

We had remarkably lax rules, apparently. No curfews for you or guests, no restrictions on alcohol, and the management tended to look the other way for marijuana (which is technically not illegal in Canada – though it’s not legal either). This is in an official University owned dorm, mind you, … heaven forbid you had a kettle though.

I won’t even go into the sort of trouble you can get into when you’re 17 and alone but for other 17 year olds in the downtown core of a city of 6 million…

It basically means that most items not allowed in dorm rooms are present in them. It does not mean that the majority of items in dorm rooms are not allowed.

well, considering my room was filled about 97% full of weed, this graph is true for me. The other 3% was beer, which was allowed – as long as we didn’t drink it in public, or did the paper bag trick.

university was a rockin good time. I wish i passed more courses, but it was a fun nine years.

This is so true, and it’s sad. Alcohol and members of the opposite sex after midnight (2:00 on weekends) are verboten, yet you can consistently find them on my floor. No one cares about authority anymore.

Yeah… I had a toaster, candles, alcohol, and swords.. Our neighbor had a pet. And technically, any knife over 4 inches long was illegal.. anyone with good kitchen knives is already in trouble right there, but they never actually confiscated those. Just the non-kitchen-type, I suppose…

I think this is pretty damn funny. We’re not allowed to have toasters in dorm rooms, and what do you think everyone has? Toasters. Last year someone burnt something in a toaster and the fire department came.
Not to mention, we’re not allowed to have beer memorabilia or alcohol in the room and last year my roommates kept a whole stash of vodka, beer, and other hard liquor.

Actually, no. All the graph says is that the sets of things banned in dorms and the set of things in dorms is not disjoint. Basically, it’s true if both sets share at least one item. Thus, upon observation of hot plates, jacob’s ladders, and various alcohols, this graph is most certainly true.

The graph is suggesting that 97% of your room’s contents are illegal items. Your bed/closet/clothes/desk/shelf/school supplies take up a lot more than 3% of the space, even if all your drawers are filled with beer bottles and switchblades.

It does to me. My college bans things like microwaves, large fridges, alcohol, etc. in dorms. Walk into most of the dorm rooms, there would be a fridge larger than the one at my house, a microwave, and beer cans everywhere.
