      Father-child relationship

The Father-child relationship is the defining factor of the fatherhood role. The majority of Fathers are naturally protective and supportive responsible parents who are able to engender a number of significant benefits for themselves, their communities, and most importantly, their children. Involved fathers offer developmentally specific provisions to their sons and daughters throughout the life cycle and are impacted themselves by their doing so. Active father figures have a key role to play in reducing behavior problems in boys and psychological problems in young women. For example, children who experience significant father involvement tend to exhibit higher scores on assessments of cognitive development, enhanced social skills and fewer behavior problems. An increased amount of father-child involvement has also proven to increase a child’s social stability, educational achievement, and even their potential to have a solid marriage as an adult. The children are also more curious about the world around them and develop greater problem solving skills. Children who were raised without fathers perceive themselves to be less cognitively and physically competent than their peers from father-present families. Mothers raising children without fathers reported more severe disputes with their child. Sons raised without fathers showed more feminine but no less masculine characteristics of gender role behavior.

According to the anthropologist Maurice Godelier, the parental role assumed by human males is a critical difference between human society and that of humans’ closest biological relatives – chimpanzees and bonobos – who appear to be unaware of their “father” connection.

  2. sk says:

totally applies to any parenting, and is something i look forward to :) also for teaching!

    • Mirkwood says:

What about spending weekends in sweatshirts and jeans, wrasslin’ on the living room floor? My dad did that with us all the time when we were litte :)

  3. Schouky says:

    I’m 21 and I allready miss my Lego :(
    And Sandcastlles!

    • Kay says:

So… get yourself some Lego? I don’t understand why you wouldn’t, if you miss it – I have a couple of fabulous Lego dragons and a giant spider, myself. Decorative AND fun! :D

      • Rogahar says:

Kay, you embody my entire life philosophy – people need to stop thinking they have to stop playing with this stuff just because they’re adults in the eyes of the legal system! If you find Lego fun, GO BUY LEGO! Have you SEEN the complexity of some of the massive models people make with that stuff?

        • tommy.223 says:

half my roon is covered with all the things i built from lego some of them contain a several thousand pieces(i make my own stuff thats why their soo big) they are an easy way to relieve stress and to be creative.

      • zippycat says:

It should also include mothers – I have two boys, and we all love it. We have thousands of bricks in the house, and I have my own sets that I have on a high shelf in my living room. I have a dragon and a couple of Ferraris, and a ton of old-school Star Wars sets. :) I’m also building the VW Bug and the Star Destroyer – but they’re on hold till winter sets in and I need an indoor project. :)

      • King D says:

21-year-olds don’t have money so they can’t afford them, duh.

        • Jocasta says:

But some in that age bracket kept their big-ass buckets of Legos from childhood! I just wish I hadn’t used my teeth to pry them apart as a young spawn.

        • artisanrox says:

Yep, so go babysit a toddler. You get money and you might get to play with *their* legos.

Having a kid just to have an excuse to play with stuff? yeah, real cost-effective there.

  4. patthebrit3 says:

It’s Lego not Legos. That like saying “waters”.
    I take it your American.

  5. Dave says:

    lego ruled my childhood!

  6. K says:

Mothers and tea parties and doll houses!

  7. Truth Be Told says:

    I totally don’t miss lego….but i do miss k-nex!!!

  8. ILikeHorses says:

what do you mean again? I’ve been playing with Legos whenever I feel like even in my twenties.

  9. Yosh says:

We took all of our LEGO blocks and put them away after my son decided they looked like something to chew on. We’ll pull them back out one of these days.

  10. Orion Fury says:

I’m coming up on 30 and I still play with LEGO Bionicles.

  11. Wilhelm says:

I’m a proud AFOL (Adult Fan Of Lego), part of 0937, the biggest portuguese LEGO community and I just keep telling: LEGO is not a toy for kids, is a tool for everyone to create whatever they feel like. Don’t say “ohh I’m too old to play with LEGO!”; in my community there is people ranging from teens to 50’s and 60’s! As for the graph, when me and my girlfriend decide to have kids, there will be “daddy’s LEGO” and “son/daughter’s LEGO”, or else I’ll have an heart attack :D

  12. Evertide says:

I must’ve missed something…playing with Legos has always been fun for me.

  13. Redneck_Rebel says:

    Parenting FAIL.

If you care more about playing with Legos than teaching your child good morals and values then you don’t deserve the privelage of having children.

  14. LEGO says:

It’s LEGO. All caps and no S.
    “I still play with LEGO”

  15. Ang says:

    Oh that is cute

  16. CDthe says:

I’m never having kids and I still play with lego…

  17. Michael Evans says:

You don’t have to have kids to play with Lego!

  18. Grandevil says:

This graph is just one more reason I don’t want children, idiotic men who think child rearing is all fun and games.

  19. velcrodots says:

My dad used to make me boats out of lego all the time, they were always so much cooler than anything I could make.

  20. Why not? says:

Any one remember Construx? Those were sweet too.

I already look forward to fatherhood so I can buy a poop-load of legos. I’ve always needed an excuse to drop $500 on that millennium falcon.

  21. Bobby says:

This graph is spot on although you need to add building sandcastles to it!

  22. samuelhamuel says:

i totally agree. The stupid American pronounciation of lego is ridiculous and annoying. And if you fools start correcting my grammar and spelling, you will be doubly sad and may never play with lego again…

    • Kirsten says:

Haw haw haw! You spelled pronunciation wrong! You should never start a sentence with the word, “and,” and you should capitalize the first letter of your sentence! Haw haw, I’m so clever!

      (Couldn’t resist. ;) )

  23. LeggoMyLego says:

My boyfriend has a giant Star Wars something or other on his computer table that I’d just love to take apart and play with the pieces, but he’d kill me. I’d say the dog knocked it off, but dogs don’t build houses out of Lego. Gonna have to get my own!

  24. Rick says:

    Anyone around: “pfffttt, legos”
By your self: “yay, space ship!” :D
