  1. tr069 says:

    Totally true!
How come I haven’t think of this graph before…!

  2. Bix Nood says:

The more you spend the less you get.

But its the whole quality over quantity.

But I am sure this graph will turn into talk about people being fat.

  3. truth says:

$80 isnt a expensive meal for high class thats the mcdonalds of high class then

  4. Dawm says:

Most kids meals are actually the proper adult portion.

    • Word says:

      Wrong.

      • Word's chair says:

        no, TRUST me, Dawm’s right.

        • null says:

No, he’s not. I’m 5′7″, 135lbs, 20 years and a kids’ meal wouldn’t even come close to filling me up.

          • the_original_shortright says:

that’s because you’re used to the regular american portion sizes. a mcdonalds kids cheeseburger is about 4oz of meat, which is the serving size an ADULT is supposed to have. consider the fact that an adult is supposed to eat a piece of meat the size of a deck of playing cards… most of us would look at that as an appetizer.

what we eat on a regular basis is revoltingly over sized. i’m definitely as guilty of it as the next person… but open your eyes and at least realize that eating a 16oz steak and a baked potato and salad and bread is absurd. it’s almost 2 times more food than we’re supposed to eat, not to mention 4 times more meat than you’re supposed to eat in a meal.

americans are fat because of portion size. you’re blessed with either a strong desire to work out or a high metabolism… but the kids meals are the proper portion sizes for adults.

            • Your Mom says:

              TL;DR

              Also, you sound fat.

              • the_original_shortright says:

if you didn’t read how did you come to the consensus that i “sound fat”?

i’m about 10 lbs over weight. but not fat by any means. nice try though! i’d give it a “c” for effort.

                • Your Mom says:

You sound fat because the corduroy your pants is made of goes “scchhhh, scchhhh, scchhhhh” and then catches on fire.

And thanks for the C, that is a much better grade than the effort I actually put into it.

            • Office worker says:

I have a difficulty believing your statements because of the completely unsupported assumptions upon which they are based. You seriously expect me to believe that McDonald’s sandwiches contain any amount of meat? Yeah right.

Seriously though, the size of the meals isn’t the problem with them so much as they are incredibly dense with calories and lack nutrition. In most regions in America the daily calorie intake has been roughly constant over the past 7 decades, only a small increase that would not explain the obesity. Inactivity seems to be the bigger issue here.

              • Devylan says:

Inactivity + meals that are “incredibly dense with calories and lack nutrition = overweight nation. I would say that the portion size doesn’t have much to do with it, as well, because people eat big meals in Europe, too.

                • Steve says:

“[...“incredibly dense with calories and lack nutrition...]” is quite true. However, Office worker is also correct that portion size hasn’t changed much in over 70 years. The real question is what has changed?

there are, of course, two answers. One, people eat out more than they used to. Two, food manufacturers have introduced several chemically altered ingredients into our food.

High fructose corn syrup, for example, has replaced sugar in most soft-drinks. HFCS has twice the calories, and half the sweetness of sugar. this means that to equal the sweetness of sugar using HFCS it is necessary to quadruple the calorie content of soft-drinks.Also, one more thing HFCS stops those from eating from feeling not hungry until they are full instead of wen they merely have had enough.

HFCS, however, costs less than half that of sugar so it gets used anyway.

                  • Naoyusimi says:

Portion sizes are INSANE now. A display of portion sizes that were common 30-40 years ago vs. portions of today is mind-boggling. The hospital where I used to work had such a display. A bagel, a muffin, a hamburger, a restaurant plate . . . all look like they’ve been massively inflated. Concurrently, what has happened to many folks? Right. Again, massively inflated.

Of course, there are a few people with metabolisms that have been able to keep up with the availability of calories; these people have such efficient calorie-burning furnaces, they can eat pretty much what they want. Other people’s bodies conserve calories efficiently . . . whether they want to or not. They are evolutionarily equipped for the next famine.

                    • Naoyusimi says:

I went to a restaurant about 10 years ago and encountered this for the first time: I ordered the pork chop and was amazed to find TWO large slabs of meat on the plate (plus enough of the two side dishes for another two meals). In many of the major chain restaurants now, that’s commonplace. Wow.

            • THBBBBBBT says:

Keep eating your tofu and diet soda. I’ll bet you buys stuff in reusable bags, drive a puke green Toyota Prius, practice Transcendental Meditation, blah blah blah. So naturally you think [CENSORED] happy meal is real food.

When I go to McDonalds I get the full package: chicken nuggets, fries, and TWO cheeseburgers.

              And I’m not fat yet.

  5. Shadrach says:

Wait what about the extremely cheap ‘greasy spoon’ diners where 5-7 bucks a head gets enough food to defeat the stomaches of all but the most hungry?

    • Me says:

Like the ones Brewski works at doing the dishes and cleaning the garbage cans?

      • Shadrach says:

Nahh like the ones most people who work in heavy industry, oil fields, and other heavy jobs go to… out of the way places normal folks don’t frequent because they seem unclean or are in ‘bad’ areas to be restaurants.

  6. vi31 says:

    Dollar sign fail.

  7. Chewbacca314 says:

If you think a $7.50 fast food value meal is a normal size adult portion, you have or will have serious problems.

    • Me says:

Let me guess. Your most commonly used phrase is “Oh, let me pick up the soap while you stand behind me.”

    • Lucy says:

I thought that Chewbacca meant that a fast food value meal usually has too much food, and terrible food at that. “You have or will have serious problems [with your health].”

    • Devylan says:

Did you ever think that Chewbacca314 may be implying the exact opposite of what you’re interpreting? In other words, he/she might be saying it’s too much food to be a normal size adult portion.

  8. Ilove2learn says:

An all-you-can-eat buffet? You’re right. I think that should be in the graph.

  9. never shown publicly says:

    wow. not funny at all

  10. Office worker says:

I think you are supposed to eat something healthy before you go.

  11. Billy Bob says:

Chili’s two for $20 is AMAZING!

  12. Yuval says:

This would look better with an x-axis to scale.

  13. Brewski says:

Have i mentioned that im a right royal tool? My comment arent the least but funny too but meh, troll is as troll does.

  14. forge says:

Then there’s Cheesecake Factory with “Jesus Christ, why do I want to pay $20 for a salad bowl the size of Shea Stadium containing all the lettuce ever produced in the state of California so far this year?”

  15. eflick says:

I call those 80 per plate places “Tinyfood Land”

I have only been to tinyfood land once before, but don’t plan on going back. because seriously tinyfood land is a JOKE.

    • Naoyusimi says:

Went to place in Chicago where our bill for 2 was nearly $200, but it wasn’t Tinyfoodland. Steak and crab claws and side dishes served family style (and priced separately) … awesome meal and plenty o’ food.

I imagine they’re an exception, though. Good graph.

  16. Office worker says:

On that note, are there really people out there that seriously believe Foie gras tastes good?
