Can’t sleep, clown will eat me…

  4. cj says:

    All Clowns are way creepy!

  5. Nash says:

Bratz dolls are really scary. Not to look at, but when you consider the psychological ramifications on little girls and the ideals and gender stereotypes they are being indoctrinated with…

  6. Todd says:

None of those things are scary. You’re all wusses.

Any woman want a real man, look me up.

    • Bratz Doll Cloe says:

Todd, wanna meet me and my sisters?

Bratz Doll Cloe (see post further up)

    • villy says:

IN my experience, any man who refers to himself as a “real” man, is probably a chump.

I’ll stick to my geeks, thanks.

    • Nickel says:

Is that the only phrase you’re capable of using? Seriously…it’s written in every freaking graph’s comments!

  7. graphjelly says:

    isn’t this a repost?

  8. Nick R. Bocker says:

    what is Punch and Judy?

  9. giskard says:

Pirates rob, kill, and rape, and you have them in the blue area? For shame.

    • rrrandom! says:

Apparently, these are the Pirates of the Carribean (spelling?)
The skeleton pirates were terrifying to me when it first came out ( think I was about 7)

  10. V Gard says:

Just the title makes it a win. “Thermometer of Scary” lol

  11. Illuari says:

China dolls are waaaaaay scarier than Bratz dolls

  12. boaks says:

And above clowns, the Burger King guy… that mask gives me nightmares. *shudder*

  13. Caio Iglesias says:

this is the best graph jam i’ve ever seen!! DAMN!!!!

  14. Jefoid says:

So much win. So very much win.

  15. Mae says:

Personally I’d be afraid of pirates much more than china dolls… with all that raping and pillaging….

  16. sopranomom says:

And Bippy the clown was the scarriest of all…Made Pennywise look like a 5-year-old in his mom’s makeup!

    • Squiggly says:

I’m disappointed… I had to scroll all the way to the bottom before someone mentioned Pennywise.

I saw your comment and thought “Finally!”

      • villy says:

Actually as much as I hate clowns, Pennywise makes me laugh.

At least in the movie, in the library scene. I don’t know why that’s so damn funny to me. I’m just twisted I suppose

  17. Curmudgeon says:

I got to go back stage after a marionette show once and meet the puppeteer and see him stowing the puppets. 36 years later and the image of that ‘thing’ looking up at me from his velvet-lined box is still burned into my memory as though it happened yesterday.

Didn’t help that the puppeteer was a dead ringer for Dr. Pretorius from The Bride of Frankenstein.

  18. wyldkard says:

And with this, you’ve just confirmed your weakness, ninja. SEND IN THE CLOWNS!

  19. Danitor says:

S/he forgot living statues… WAY scarier than magicians!

  20. dahumanz says:

why are all you guys scared by clowns???

are all americans scared of clowns?

    thats so ridiculous!

    • Homer says:

Think about it, which would have you more scared:

Opening your closet door and seeing a guy with a knife

      or

Opening your closer door and seeing a clown smiling?

For me, the close is scarier. You know why the guy is there with the knife: to steal from you or do you harm. WTF is that clown up to?

    • rrrandom! says:

Aparently, you have never seen or heard of the Batman movies.

Jokers, or jesters, were basically clowns during the Middle Ages. They stereotypical image of the belled hat and funny slippers is a bit off, they usually wore the same as everyone else in court. Some of the more prized jokers were the ones that were “touched by God” a.k.a, insane, and would do some pretty wierd stuff. (Source: One of the Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers, I can’t remember which)

    • Simpson says:

So, you have to turn fear of clowns into an Americans-are-stupid thing? Seriously? Isn’t that taking anti-Americanism a little TOO far?

And I *wasn’t* scared of clowns until I watched that Pennywise thing. I can’t imagine the messed up parents that would let their kids be in a movie like that. She’ll be FAMOUS! She’ll be able to afford the therapy!

      • Max Chaplin says:

Well, the concept of evil clowns is most common in American works. It’s actually more common there than the original friendly clown image! In eastern Europe, on the other hand, clownery is regarded not as stupid entertainment for kids but as true art. The most known example is probably Slava Polunin and his “Litsedeyi” mime theater, whose abstract shows contain odd humour, thoughtful sadness and blissful childish innocence. He even collaborated once with Terry Gilliam.

    • selene says:

I’m not American, and clowns scare me. Half the people around my age that I know think clowns are creepy.

Srsly. Americans aren’t the only ones who watched Stephen King’s It. Also, look up Coulrophobia.

  21. papajon says:

Apologies in advance to the author but in my world this is closer to the ‘thermometer of boring and/or annoying’.

But hey, I like the thermometer idea!

  22. NinjaDog251 says:

since when are magicians scary? and wtf is punch and judy?

  23. Blac-bear says:

Sock puppets are freaky…with their little beady eyes, always staring, dead, soul-less and cold…

  24. Kablamm says:

    What about Saladfingers?

  25. emanon says:

    You forgot Burger King.

  26. irisheagle says:

yea clowns are the top of that list, especially Homey the clown, with his magical sock full of rocks

  27. ssass says:

“Punch and Jody” as in Johnny Eck’s puppets?! if so thats so awesome

  28. Kinseth says:

Would’ve enjoyed this a little more if it went the opposite direction…

But I agree with basically everything on here.

  29. SpaceMan says:

Sock puppets are not scary only if you finds out that it is

  30. Wasp says:

I think I’m the only living person who actually likes and appreciates clowns. They’re suppose to be funny and fall down a lot! They wear rainbows for crying out loud!

    • Panthera says:

Yeah, it was really just that movie “It” that made clowns seem actually scary.
I always thought they were funny as a kid. And I still have no idea how they all manage to fit into that little car.

  31. Edmund says:

    Boring LOL.

  32. SoWhat says:

You forgot Santa Claus. What’s creepier than a fat man sneaking into your house in the middle of the night leaving gifts for little kids…
Oh yeah, taking said little kids to sit on his lap at the mall.

    Pervert…

  33. John says:

Let me guess… Was this written after the Batman movie came out?

  34. Kevin T. says:

I think Magicians should be a lot lower, and Bratz dolls should be a little higher.

  35. gvh says:

My graph! It’s back. Just like an evil clown who you thought was a childhood dream. Brrr… Thanks for the retraumatisation material GraphJam.

Yes yes yes, many omissions – ventriloquists’ dummies the most regrettable.

  36. Katie says:

How are Punch and Judy scary at all? :/

    • gvh says:

The grotesque carved faces and dangly legs account for some of it. Mr Punch’s creepy swazzle voice. Mostly the fact that he’s a homicidal wife beater who tries to feed his child to alligators.

  37. OrionRed says:

    Best clown incident ever…

Guy robs a bank wearing a clown mask in small midwestern town, police are called. Child is having a party at a local Wendy’s restaurant, and his mom hired a party clown for fun. Clown is leaving Wendy’s as police are looking for man in clown mask. Entire arrest is filmed by party goers.

Best part is when cops check the clown’s pockets for weapons/contriband. (big string of scarves tied together, pockets with no bottoms, balloons etc)

  38. Mariachi says:

I can’t believe no one mentioned the Word misspelling recognition of Bratz. lol.

And Homer Simpson’s worst fear is sock puppets… :)

    • sockymcsockster says:

Finally! I was waiting for someone to mention Homer’s fear of sock puppets.

I made a video for a high school Spanish project based on that premise where a homicidal sock puppet offed thieves one-by-one.

  39. Bozo T. Clown says:

    CLOWNS ARE NOT SCARY!

How many times do I have to beat that into your thick head?

    Stupid King.

  40. penguin on the telly says:

bratz dolls need to way higher on the list–like at the top.

  41. chinscratch says:

If this was a cool meter, sock puppets would be near the top, at least to anyone who’s seen Sifl and ollie.

  42. I am Man says:

Where do the Firbys fit in this? They are pretty high too!

  43. nathan says:

Marionennetes should be TONS higher, like after magicians.

  44. olga says:

why isn’t carrot top on here?

  45. Hurris says:

why the hell are people scared of clowns srsly ive seen “IT” alot and im not scared of them i know alot of people that are and i dont understand i mean im scared of snakes but i have my reasons. when i was young every time i was around one something goes bad whether i get bit or almost strangled

  46. cal331 says:

Clowns are scary, and you can thank John Wayne Gacy for that.

Agree that ventriloquil figures should be on the list (see the movie “Magic” with Anthony Hopkins for more data.)

Also missing: The utterly creeptastic ‘Test Card Girl’ from “Life on Mars.” (UK version, it should go without saying.) Absolutely eerie.

  47. Amee says:

only thing above clowns: Kiss (the band)

  48. Amee says:

    thier music is good though

  49. That.asshole says:

Oh, well, you got clowns in the right spot.

  50. Alixandria says:

Pirates aren’t scary and clowns are?

  51. Trifas says:

Spiders…. spiders should be on top.
