Actually, Spanish isn’t really spoken faster – on average it just has many more syllables per word and more words are required to express the same sentiment – that’s why you perceive it as “fast.” Also, not understanding a language means that you can’t tell when one word stops and another begins, which can contribute to the perception of rapidity.

I agree jl569+, and I need my throat at the moment. dstar–my idea wasn’t so much WHAT they’re saying as the visual impact of the people saying it. And, although I’m not Spanish, I’m Sicilian, plus I grew up in Texas where they taught Spanish in public schools beginning around second grade–so I understand a bit.

What? Does she spell it Rachael? Indeed, I don’t watch day-time talk shows. I guess I’m too busy correcting spelling and grammar to be doing that. Add the fact that her voice makes my ears bleed…

I guess it’s less infuriating when someone misspells a name than when they misspell a word they really should know. Also, it just looks ridiculous that way. If it’s hard to spell, use Google as a spell-check. I used to do it all the time, before I got Safari.

that’s because the spanish they teach you in HS sucks and couldn’t get you anywhere in latin america…maybe mugged.
if you don’t know spanish, it sounds fast. just like if you don’t know chinese it always sounds like an argument. when i didn’t know english everyone sounded like they had a hot potato mouth.

Also, I’m a Spanish speaker. I’m pretty sure the graph maker was talking about Argentinan telenovelas. THEY are the fast-talkers. Also Spaniards.

Hmm, I’ve been trying to come up with a graph for Spanish TV based on the general idea of representation of men and women, but have failed miserably. Usually women are (1) huge-breasted, (2) big-haired, (3) tightly clothed, (4) skimpily clothed. Men are usually (1) appropriately attired, (2) muy macho, (3) priests, (4) clowns.

Is there a graph in that?

As I recall, a linguist friend of mine informed me that Spanish actually encodes less information per phoneme than English does. As in, it really does take more syllables to say the same thought in Spanish, on the average. So that’s why it’s always longer on the subtitles (compare them side by side on a typical film), and sounds faster. On the other hand, there are fewer variations of sounds… you can generally “sound out” a spanish word. Try that with English (through, bough, rough, though).
