  1. Roh says:

Nice chart! I’m on lollerskates. But there is a small spelling error at the top, but only a minor fail.

    • Sensei Le Roof says:

      *steals Spelling Nazi status*

      Dialogue.

      • Jonny Heart says:

I was going to say that you could have at least played English Nazi and also included the fact that you can’t have a dialogue with just one person in most situations.
However, as this IS Rachel Ray we’re talking about, I wouldn’t put it past her.

  2. ... says:

It’s funny because spanish is spoken faster than english…………………………………………….

  3. Degu says:

    Gilmore Girls is missing !

  4. Higgens says:

I was also expecting a Gilmore Girls joke.

  5. istanna says:

Its not spanish tv shows only
We spanish, speak too fast, and too loud. lol
    Girlmore girls are no competition.

  6. Ren says:

I’m surprised no one mentioned Speed Racer.

  7. Skyfire says:

Too true. Took Spanish all through HS and in college, and I still can’t follow conversations.

Also missing from the graph: Excel Saga

    • dstar says:

that’s because the spanish they teach you in HS sucks and couldn’t get you anywhere in latin america…maybe mugged.
if you don’t know spanish, it sounds fast. just like if you don’t know chinese it always sounds like an argument. when i didn’t know english everyone sounded like they had a hot potato mouth.

      • Jeweled_Dreamscape says:

*laughs* I took HS spanish, and actually did alright… until they got to year two, and they tried cramming in three or four tenses and truckloads of new vocab in just one semester… XP

Really? That’s what we soundlike??? Er… like stuffed full of mashed potatoes? (had honestly never thought of it like that)

  8. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle says:

I was thinking the same thing! After watching, my talking speed about doubled.

  9. Sunshiner says:

Count me in with those who expected Gilmore Girls. I actually love that show, despite the crazy-talk-banter-stuff. :3 hehe
And wtf is dialouge? Download Safari; it catches spelling mistakes for you…

    • Crystal Kyuketsuki says:

More like FireFox. Last time I uses Safari, it wouldn’t load images when I pressed the back button.

  10. neone says:

Fast? The video its not a great example…

  11. Biteme says:

Where’s the Gilmore Girls bar on this?

  12. bob says:

it only seems fast, because you dont know it. someone that dindt know english would think english is fast, assuming its someone other than gw bush talking, like someone in NY for instance.

    • Cowpie says:

But… them yorkers don speak the engrish properly!

    • Sunshiner says:

Actually, Spanish sounds faster because the words flow together more. English isn’t like that. English/German/etc. speakers more or less pause after each word (even if it isn’t as noticeable to native speakers), whereas in Spanish, ‘como estas’ (2 words) can sound like ‘comestas’ (1 word) when a fluent speaker says it.
My friend (whose 1st language is Spanish) says English sounds choppy to him, so I don’t think those who aren’t native English-speakers would think English is fast, as you have said.

  13. Lol says:

    Stole my comment.

  14. Max Chaplin says:

It’s not that the dialogue is fast, your mind is slow!

  15. Sarah says:

The only reason I know that is because of Family Guy….now I want to watch an episode to see it for myself, lololol.

  16. As I recall, a linguist friend of mine informed me that Spanish actually encodes less information per phoneme than English does. As in, it really does take more syllables to say the same thought in Spanish, on the average. So that’s why it’s always longer on the subtitles (compare them side by side on a typical film), and sounds faster. On the other hand, there are fewer variations of sounds… you can generally “sound out” a spanish word. Try that with English (through, bough, rough, though).

    • PG says:

That’s true. I frequently do translations and any idea will take about 15% more words to be expressed in spanish vs. english

  17. Ekid2k says:

    speed racer?

  18. staclol says:

Hmm, I’ve been trying to come up with a graph for Spanish TV based on the general idea of representation of men and women, but have failed miserably. Usually women are (1) huge-breasted, (2) big-haired, (3) tightly clothed, (4) skimpily clothed. Men are usually (1) appropriately attired, (2) muy macho, (3) priests, (4) clowns.

Is there a graph in that?

    • jl5691426 says:

It would be a complex one, and complexity can lead to mistakes. I wouldn’t attempt it given the mob of people who don’t understand the difference between math class and a humor site; they’ll rip your throat out.

    • dstar says:

if you don’t know what they are saying you’re probably not the appropriate person to make this graph. get help from a latin american immigrant. i’m looking forward to when this graph gets done. i’m hispanic and i don’t watch spanish channels bc they’re basically porn.

      • staclol says:

I agree jl569+, and I need my throat at the moment. dstar–my idea wasn’t so much WHAT they’re saying as the visual impact of the people saying it. And, although I’m not Spanish, I’m Sicilian, plus I grew up in Texas where they taught Spanish in public schools beginning around second grade–so I understand a bit.

  19. PG says:

I hadn’t seen the video. Those people sound chilean, who don’t speak fast at all. Watch something from Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia or Dominican Republic, that is FAST.

  20. weenieboy says:

I agree!! I actually came here to post about the Gilmore Girls not being on this graph, but you beat me to it!

  21. Amelia says:

i was expecting gilmore girls to be on this graph.

also veronica mars is fast, and family guy sometimes!

  22. Metallemmy says:

Whoa, I was just eating in a Mexican restaurant, and I pointed that out!

  23. Margaret says:

Dialouge… That’s the Spanish version of sledding on your back, right? Feet first? Real scary! In the winter Olympics? Very intense. Ultra high speed. omg wow How do you say “omg wow” in Spanish anyway? real fast anyway, I guess…

    • Sunshiner says:

Dios Mio! Caramba! (or just ‘wow’, that works too)

[I was thinking the same thing about (dia)louge. I kept thinking of an episode of (Celebrity) Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Tony Hawk and Regis mispronounced 'street luge' wrong and Tony Hawk had to correct him.]

      • Lol says:

I’m from spain (and living in spain) and I’ve never said Dios Mio caramba in my whole life

        • Sunshiner says:

Well, I’m sorry if I offended you, but ‘my god’ translates to ‘dios mio’, no? And I know nobody in their right mind says caramba, I was channeling Bart Simpson there…

  24. Danielle says:

You needed to add Gillmore Girls to the list. lol

  25. Sal says:

Judging from the comments here, one could probably make a graph showing that spelling nazis don’t watch day time talk shows. Many comments on how “dialouge” is wrong, but not a single one on “Rachel Ray” also being wrong. :P

    • Sunshiner says:

What? Does she spell it Rachael? Indeed, I don’t watch day-time talk shows. I guess I’m too busy correcting spelling and grammar to be doing that. :P Add the fact that her voice makes my ears bleed…

I guess it’s less infuriating when someone misspells a name than when they misspell a word they really should know. Also, it just looks ridiculous that way. If it’s hard to spell, use Google as a spell-check. I used to do it all the time, before I got Safari.
      /rant

      • Sensei Le Roof says:

I’ve been spending the last few years making a list of things you can’t do with cod, because of her…

  26. Marcos says:

Try to understand what a people from the caribbean is saying! Even for me (mexican spanish speaker) it is very difficult to understand them cause they speak so slurred and fast!

  27. Ana says:

Now imagine living in Portugal, right next to Spain. When Spanish people come here on vacation is TORTURE!!!!!!!! :o

  28. MNM says:

    Vietnamese, thats scary stuff Oo

  29. Ed says:

How is this different from any other language? Any language you don’t know sounds faster that your native one.

Also, I’m a Spanish speaker. I’m pretty sure the graph maker was talking about Argentinan telenovelas. THEY are the fast-talkers. Also Spaniards.

  30. pantalonesconqueso says:

House MD has some of the fastest (English) and most improbable, impractical dialouge ever. But it used to be good.

  31. Penelopi says:

    GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!

  32. monkeyboy42 says:

The works of Aaron Sorkin belong on this graph somewhere as well. Not at the top, but damn can that dude pack dialog into short spaces.

  33. TVDK says:

Duh, Spanish is one of the fastest languages on the planet. Next you should make a graph about how blue the sky is.

  34. Spectre514 says:

Usually graphs with one really big overly exaggerated ones aren’t funny, but this is actually true, not exaggerated, telumundo gives me headache.

  35. Colleen says:

That is exactly what I was going to say! They talk way to fast on that show….

  36. Kristin says:

Gilmore Girls is definitely up there with the Spanish Channel.

  37. That One Guy says:

Gah, that show’s hysterical, though. It’s quite good for a dramedy.

  38. Wolfenpilot687 says:

Uhm…I’m latin american, and english sounds way too fast…but at least I can write it. =P

  39. The highest bar would be for wither Italian or Spanish football announcers. These guys can make paint drying sound fast.

  40. LoquaciousLo says:

Actually, Spanish isn’t really spoken faster – on average it just has many more syllables per word and more words are required to express the same sentiment – that’s why you perceive it as “fast.” Also, not understanding a language means that you can’t tell when one word stops and another begins, which can contribute to the perception of rapidity.

  41. Alexa says:

i agree 100 percent! that is asctually the only reason i even clicked onto the comment board, to mention that Gilmore Girls shouldbe on it, but everybody beat me too it! lol.

  42. uzigawa says:

you skipped gilmore girls, cause that’s higher than holy sh*t it up there with satan on speed

  43. slingsnarrows says:

Gilmore Girls and The West Wing!

  44. Rainbow*Star says:

You left out NigaHiga’s YouTube videos. Who could forget the Big Bouncing Inflatable Green Ball?
