  1. DETRIOT SUCKS says:

    Go Pens!

  2. edancoll says:

    SO ORIGINAL! [/sarcasm]

  3. Aidan Geurro says:

    lol

  4. jackie says:

hockey is such a great sport. its awesome when theres a fight but its a great game altogether. its so fast paced and requires such sill

  5. DavidRS1992 says:

I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

    (With apologies to Rodney Dangerfield.)

    • The Voice of Experience says:

No apology necessary, David. You credited dear old Rodney. It’s a great quote; perfect for the graph. Nice work.

  6. wit says:

People who watch hockey for fighting are people that have a hard time following a black puck on white ice.

  7. smuffle says:

I think you mean “why Americans watch hockey”. We Canucks know it’s about a lot more than just that.
    @wit: lol! srsly.

    • smuffle says:

Also, you want a hockey fight? Here’s a hockey fight:

      • Pheemz says:

Pffft, jessies! Handbags at ten paces while wearing more armour than a medieval knight isn’t proper fighting! For a proper brawl you gotta see rugby, those buggers go at it without wearing armour.

        • RJ says:

Rugby players are INSANE! I mean that in the best of ways.

        • Yasa says:

Not to discredit rugby fights, but hockey fights are still punches to the unprotected face and a punch to the face is a punch to the face regardless.

      • Mike Mulbury says:

Please….it’s not hockey unless you’ve beaten a fan with his own shoe after climbing into the stands.

    • Layne says:

Or at least the people from down south. Those of us in Michigan know what good hackey is, and it doesn’t involve much fighting at all.

      • Muerki says:

        Here, here!

        (Go Wings, btw!)

      • wit says:

Most of the states that can produce natural ice have a solid knowledge of the game. Go figure, places with ice know hockey. Phoenix not so much.

      • Lancer says:

Quite so. Up here in Minnesota we aren’t called the State of Hockey and the team of 18,000 for nothing! (Not sure if I got the number quite right but w/e)
Of course… I can’t exactly say that we don’t enjoy watching the fights, heck we even have one player in the Wilds who practically specializes in vengeance >=D

        • burnsgirl08 says:

I’m guessing you’re talking about Derek Boogaard. Fletcher better not trade him. There’s also Cal Clutterbuck. As you can tell by my screename, my favorite player is Brent Burns, and I’m also from the State of Hockey. Go Wild!!!!!!!

  8. MrsJasonSpezza says:

I’m all three. mostly the green & blue :]

    ps. go wings :]

  9. ErinPatricia says:

I watch Hockey because its awesome!
Takes a million times more skill than football or baseball or basketball!

    Go PENS!

  10. A.Brod says:

only ignorant hockey fans watch for fighting. and yeah completely unoriginal

  11. Chewbacca314 says:

This graph had to be made by some person in like Texas who has seen about 0.24 hockey games total in their life.

  12. TheProdigy says:

I actually hate hockey and fighting I just absolutely LOVE paying money to sit in a cold arena. This graph is SOOOO accurate! =D

    >_>

    • Yasa says:

Arenas aren’t very cold. In fact, the Saddledome in Calgary is very warm, as is the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Nowhere near Lambeau Field in Green Bay or Ralph Wilson in Buffalo during the winter.

  13. Nedmark says:

    Uh…no not for me.

Living in a baseball (“I never knew how boring this game really is”) town
brings said fans to the ice during the winter ruining it for real fans.

    Hockey rules!

  14. Mcgyvr says:

The fight shown in the “source” video makes me so happy.

On the other hand, I LOVE HOCKEY. For a lot more than just the fights.

  15. Miss Prufrock says:

This must’ve been made by an American…this is blasphemy to all Canadians :P

    • DP says:

I’ve spent a year in Canada and I’ve seen them all cheer up as the first fight started. I was like: “WTF this shouldn’t be part of any sport (except boxing)” and they were only like: “What this is cool, look at them go!”

That day I decided I just don’t get hockey.

      • wit says:

Yours is a world of black and white, not the many shades that made up life.

Some fighting is good, some is not. A physical game needs it’s releases. If those don’t happen, it’ll boil over to a brawl or goonery.

Goonery (noun.) the art, practice, or skill of deliberate injury to another player.

      • smuffle says:

It depends on the fight. See, I don’t like fighting myself (although I think it’s kind of hilarious given that they almost never actually injure each other), but some fights are justified, like defending your goalie if someone pushes him around. And some fights are just inevitable, like that video I posted… Habs/Nordiques was a huge rivalry in the days before the Nords moved to Colorado, so a playoff game between the two was bound to blow up. Same as every Habs/Bruins game involves fighting. Even if you tried to stop it, you probably couldn’t.

And even if some people cheer at the fights, they’ll invariably cheer louder at a fantastic goal.

  16. Jay says:

although hockey has gotten less rough, and that is a little disappointing, i still watch it for the skill and excitement from two evenly matched teams. im from michigan, ive known hockey for 18 out of my 20 years (soon to be 21) alive. go wings!

  17. Forgetful says:

    You forgot Canadian (50%)

  18. j-rock71 says:

Any idiot can kick a ball, it takes skills to shoot a puck.
    :LETS GO PENS!:
    HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  19. yrb says:

have you ever been to a hockey game? it’s not really cold. a few drinks also help ;)

  20. Dunk says:

    Hockey fights are clownshoes.

  21. Caleb says:

Every game I’ve ever been to the arena isn’t that cold. :/

  22. Matt says:

You know, as a hockey fan, I find this offensive. Only 50% of why I watch hockey is the fighting! (the other 46-48% are the big hits!!!)

  23. Lancer says:

Whoever made this graph clearly hasn’t been to a good game of hockey… He probably watched half a game on TV and then made this graph. I remember the Wilds game I went to a while back, my brother got my family seats four rows off the boards for an early Christmas gift. First period the away team scored two goals but the Wilds came back and scored three unanswered goals to win it! Let me tell you the fans were cheering about twenty times as loud as they would have if there was a fight with Boogard in it! (and they cheer rather loud when he gets in a fight)

  24. Petey says:

I am part of that green sliver.

With maybe some overlap into the blue…

  25. vobla says:

this may be true in America, definitely not in Europe…

  26. tajohns34 says:

Whoever made this graph has never been to a hockey game. The ice is frozen from underneath, it is never cold in the arena. However, I still like the graph. And yes, the fighting is awesome

  27. Aguy says:

Only true of teams to the south of Denver. Farther north skill is around 80%, and fighting is replaced by checking, because we realize it’s far more common.
