  1. ben says:

sometimes the remake is better. but usually not.

  2. OtherBill says:

    Werewolves Of London == Win
    Sweet Home Alabama == Win

However, (no) thanks to Kid Rock, I’ve learned that

Werewolves Of London + Sweet Home Alabama == FAIL.

    • diamondshark says:

I swear I wanted to shoot Kid Rock when he came out with his “version” of sweet home alabama…

      • Wandering Penguin says:

What? You mean you guys didn’t enjoy when he rhymed “trying different things” with “smoking funny…things”? Or, my personal favourite (maybe of all time), “sippin’ whiskey out the bottle” with “never [or is it 'not'?] thinkin’ ’bout tomorrow”?
C’mon, those are classic lyrics! Brings a tear to me eye, it does!

What a pile of crap that song is.

        • nekokami says:

i cant STAND kid rock. he thinks hes so cool with that song. all it i s is a piece o horse poo with bits of corn and peas in it! * anger faic *

  3. markmier says:

I really like Cake’s remake of “I Will Survive.”

  4. YourMother says:

Typo : “Catchy song people sing behind you at schol”

  5. Max Chaplin says:

    What’s “schol”?

  6. Kodyack says:

The remake of Free Falling is in my head… I hate it.

  7. PJ says:

‘Ice Ice Baby’ sampling ‘Under Pressure’ is not even in the same universe, and I don’t mean that in a good way. About ICE, that is.

Under Pressure is one of the greatest songs EVAH. Queen AND Bowie? C’mon. You KNOW IT.

  8. Shancey says:

I hate popular music. I “schol” even more. And I hate this graph even more than that

  9. Mkay says:

It’s so true, it hurts me in soft places.

  10. Kortaka says:

Flo Rida’s ‘Right Round’ totally ruins Dead Or Alive’s original song just with so much sampling.

    • penisinmymouth says:

      any rap after 2001 sucks

      • remolay says:

correction, any music after 2001 sucks

        • Kortaka says:

100% agreed with all of you.

          • Czernobog says:

I want o take a monster dump on each of you lawns, you insular morons.

Mainstream music sucks, sure, but it sucked before 2001 too.

        • winternets says:

Further correction, any mainstream music after 2001 sucks. Stratovarius’s new album is pretty damn good…

        • musiclover says:

          except metal

        • nekokami says:

not true. rise against sings very well… startesd writing in 1999 or somethin like that and still manage to top off over a million in chARITY PROFITS! yah thats rite they can afford over a million to charity. IN YOUr FACE, SOCIETY!

      • huh says:

lol at the “any music after 19XX sucks” mentality. Your parents hated your music. Their parents hated theirs. Remember, ELVIS WAS CONSIDERED THE DEVIL, just like Kiss, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, etc….
So what happens is you hate this generation’s music, they hate the next generation, and so on. It’s quite stupid really. We never learn that the next generation will NOT make music we like, EVER. INb4 someone says “Im 12 and I hate new music”. Yeah, whatever.

    • Mkay says:

Worse is using Enya’s ‘The Celts’ in some rap song. It’s just… wrong. Two genre that should never meet in any alley, birthed that monstrosity.

    • yelyak says:

      Truth WIN!

  11. lolMiel says:

Ugh, I was thinking this after being forced to endure my housemate’s repeated playings of that new song that samples “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”…I don’t even know who did the new version or what it’s called, all I know is it makes me want to destroy.

  12. Jefoid says:

Fiona Apple’s remake of “Across the Universe” is great. Bush’s “Wild Horses” ain’t bad either.

    • Andrea says:

There are some cool covers, but songs that sample classic riffs have a tendency towards lameness :(

Like… whatever the song is that’s on the radio at the moment and completely rips off The Cure’s ‘Close to Me’. I nearly spewed the first time I heard it. And every subsequent time I heard it.

  13. Purple says:

Why must fanboys always get so offended when another artist samples their deity’s work?

It’s a compliment in the highest form.

Art will always be linked, and artists will always inspire other artists.

Get over it, just because you don’t like something, doesn’t make it trash.

    Unfunny graph too.

    • Yosh says:

It’s not about being a fanboy. It’s about the fact that the song was pretty much perfect to begin with and some “artist” comes along, changes it, and acts like they created the whole thing. There’s a difference between being inspired and completely redoing what has already been established while calling it creativity. It’s like paint on a house. You can get away with going over the place with a couple coats of a neutral tone. But, try to paint the house with day-glo pink and orange and you’ll be asking for trouble.

      • Kortaka says:

I agree with Yosh, the main problem is these people sampling or covering classic songs and most kids my age not having any idea that the song wasn’t actually written by them.

        • Jurlique says:

          yup my sentiments exactly.

        • Yosh says:

Reminds of when I went into the store the other day. The speakers were playing the original Wham! “Careless Whisper.” The girl checking me out said, “These guys are so awesome! I saw them in concert last weekend.” It took the store manager, the guy standing behind me, and myself to convince her that Seether did NOT write it.

          • Kortaka says:

Holy hell, the Careless Whisper thing weirds me out. I’m a huge George Michael / Wham! fan, and when I heard that on an all-rock radio station I just about had a heart attack.

        • Edward says:

That sort of crap has been going on at least since the Byrds covered “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

      • huh says:

Most don’t “act” like anything. Everyone knows there is an original. Get over yourself. Your “painting a house colors” analogy is really, really stupid.

  14. Antwan Merriwether says:

    Hated it *snap*

  15. freckle_duck says:

Its not so much the copying, more the copying and making a complete mess of it and ruining the song for everyone.
Kortaka’s right, Flo Rida’s ‘Right Round’ was no way near as good as Dead or Alive’s one, what’s more annoying was that for a while my friends wouldn’t stop humming it! (Right Round):(

  16. Andrew says:

I’m lookin’ at you, “You Spin Me Right Round.” >.>

  17. lewis the clark says:

    Damn schol children!

  18. Lolzaer says:

Well, once you compare Green Day’s, or Muse’s sampling of “House of the Rising Sun” to some other peoples’… Eugh…

  19. Sarah says:

    True.

  20. Jen says:

i completely agree with this graph

  21. will says:

And then there is the rap ripoff of build me up buttercup by B.O.B. in Don’t break my heart that absolutely ruins a great song

  22. Viking says:

While *most* remixed and resampled music suck major (your choice term here), certain songs (such as “Mad World”, originally by Tears For Fears, redone by Gary Jules) are good, and even endorsed by the original artist. These I can appreciate, while choosing to like the original better…. but the others…. MY GOD PEOPLE!!! STOP ALREADY

  23. Kit says:

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
This applies to music as well.

  24. tozie says:

i was more or less reffering to when sean kingston samples stand by me, dyer maker is ripped of on a chorus, or another song is taken. Most of the fans of the new music arent even aware of this. I wasnt really going for covers

  25. MusicLuvr says:

The worst is not the remakes.. but when they take one line of a GOOD song and repeat it with some beats and the sounds of someone raping a keyboard.. THAT’S something that gets airplay every 5 minutes.. lol

    • The Voice of Experience says:

“and the sounds of someone raping a keyboard..” Raping? HOW is God’s name does one…? (ugh) Forget I asked.

  26. Delta says:

    this is SOO true.

  27. Kate says:

I love singing behind people at schol.

  28. RinnaRainbowlicious says:

Uh. Not sure if ‘OMG I LOVE THIS SONG!!’ is a popularity level. Some plain common sense, please.

  29. yelyak says:

Did you make this graph because of the new ‘You Spin me Round’ song?
Coz that pretty much sums up this graph.

  30. Musicmom870 says:

Covers are useful when you’re learning how to play. After that, make your own songs! If you can’t figure out how to make your own music and tell us something you want to say, then go play in a bar somewhere–you don’t deserve air time.
And I’m glad schol’s out. Gives the kids a break from all that lerning.

  31. Naomi says:

I hate, hate, HATE that new song that samples “Blue” by Eiffel 65. I think sampling sometimes is worse than remaking >___>

  32. remolay says:

new horrible cover: Shiny Toy Guns, cover of Peter Shilling’s Major Tom (Coming Home). No classic music should be covered and then used in a Car commercial (Same thing goes with Space Oddity

Also note: pop has been dead since Brittany Spears’ fame went straight to her head

    • Kortaka says:

I know, what’s up with all the Major Tom songs in the car commercials?! David Bowie would be ashamed that the character he created is being used to sell something that doesn’t even have to do with the actual character… these songs being used to sell spaceships, MAYBE would work…

      • Kortaka says:

I just hope dearly that they don’t decide to use Ashes to Ashes for the next car that comes out… especially if it’s covered by a female singer, like these other two.

        • remolay says:

yeah, If space shuttles would be available to the public, I’s understand those.
If they do use Ashes to Ashes for next year, I’ll scream… even louder if it’s a cover

  33. cynicalsandman says:

I’ve rarely heard a remake that didn’t completely embarrass the original…and don’t get me wrong, I like rap, but some people shouldn’t have access to a microphone or voice distortion equipment…

  34. Jay says:

    flo-rida needs to die

  35. winternets says:

Does anyone else find it kind of funny that Flo Rida (pay attention to the last name) chose to butcher the song used in Meatspin?

  36. sfedak says:

I realize this is a few years old, but oh god, if I ever hear Sum41’s cover of Love Song ever again, I’ll go postal. Blasphemy.

    • Kortaka says:

Another thing that’s a few years old, Marilyn Manson’s cover of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). Yowwwch. That did not turn out well. His cover of Personal Jesus was awful also…

  37. Kelly says:

there is also a category for the kind of music that people boast about when they want to seem well-rounded in the arts, because we all know that liking poetic scratchy emo music makes you better than those teenie boppers.

i get really annoyed when people reject popular music just because it´s popular. sometimes it´s popular because it´s good and it´s no crime for you to like something everyone likes. liking it or not liking it does not make you special.

i suppose i was supposed to say something funny…. um… try saying “retarded turtle” five times fast… that is all.

  38. Wolfram says:

When MCR tries to remake “Under Pressure” and fails, i have hope.
When MCR tries to copy-cat Pink Floyd, i RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE

  39. Starly says:

Pop quiz kiddies :) who originally sung “the tide is high”?
    Hint i wasn’t Blondie.

  40. remolay says:

Recently I heard a pop song on the radio where the singer obviously could not sing at all. Every note was digitally corrected. here’s the worst part, original song. I just thought, I have no clue who this guy is, but if a song is THIS corrected, it shouldn’t be on the radio.

Another sucky band, Breathing Underwater: The lead singer looks trapped in the 60’s (no problem with that), has the vocal range of ringo star, and singing style of Yoko Ono, the rest of the guys are great though

  41. Ben L says:

    Logic fail.

When you remake a song, you are not modifying or removing the original. Hence, it is impossible for the original to be ruined. The original still exists as it was.

  42. timelord says:

did anyone else notice they spelled school wrong when it says “catchy song that people sing behind you at school”
UNless if I’m mistaken, then that person had a typing fail….

  43. CuBuLo says:

Daft Punk is at the “Quality, Original Music” catagory

  44. fern says:

Seether’s Careless Whisper. OH GOD. It’s the sound of my soul dying.

  45. lost90'sKid says:

stupid flo rida and his stupid copying >_> i swore at my friends for showing me those rip off songs.

    • Phoenix says:

Yes, I really love the original Dead or Alive version of “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”, so when I heard Flo Rida’s version for the first time when fiddling around with my radio, I almost threw the radio to the ground. I am still reeeeeaaally disgusted.

  46. Phoenix says:

No offence to all those people who like all that hip hop and rap or whatever you wish to call it, but today’s music is unoriginal garbage. None of thas the potential to be as timeless and unforgettable as say, Queen, The Beatles, AC/DC or Journey. Sure, it may be what everybody is listening to these days, but honestly, I hardly doubt that it will stand the test of time. At my school, almost everybody is able to recite all the lyrics to “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” and other songs that we are a bit young to be listening to. Will the future generations be able to sing today’s music like that? I highly doubt songs like “Swing” and “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” will last like “I Want To Rock & Roll All Night” has.

    Feel free to argue this.

  47. Ana says:

    AMEN!

  48. Edward says:

I never understood how completely a song could be desecrated until I sat through the credits for the Watchmen movie. “Desolation Row” remade by My Chemical Romance – what in God’s name was any party involved in that mad science experiment thinking?

  49. technoguyx says:

    Sad but true. :C

  50. Doug says:

Well, is it ok to remake a good song to appeal to a different audience? Like Korn’s Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd cover) or It Dies Today’s Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode Cover) as long as they changed the song enough to not be “the original played by a different band” but “a band playing their version of the original”? That’s fine. The crap most groups do remaking songs is doing is as dumb and useless as Flo Rida’s name.

Another part of this graph is for all the T-Pain types out there who overdistort their voice, “sing” someone elses lyrics to a generic beat someone else plays. Why on earth are these people famous?

And everyone will think their generation had the best music. Don’t argue about it.

  51. Anonguy5 says:

*cough* COLDPLAY *cough* viva la vida stolen from creaky boards n Satriani *cough*

  52. graphjelly says:

one song in the history of the universe broke this graphs logic: still alive. Awesome song, and (sort of) well known.

  53. fastlane250 says:

    So true.

  54. Flaria says:

Rihanna’s remake of the Numa Numa stunk. Live the life? Wtf, I prefer the original much better.

Also, isn’t it weird that whenever other musicians do a cover for her song, “Umbrella,” they always sound better?

  55. jul4565 says:

    100% agreed

  56. Xebra says:

I usually don’t comment, but I just had to on this. I am seriously tired of rap remakes of quality songs! It started with Numa Numa, then went on to ruin other great ones like You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record Baby), I’m Blue from Eiffel 65, AND IT STILL CONTINUES! Rap artists need to learn that they’re destroying great oldies and turning them into sexual crap. >:(

    • Wandering Penguin says:

Wait… PLEASE tell me you didn’t just say “I’m Blue” was a QUALITY SONG?

Fail. Further complaints from you will be disregarded. That is all.

  57. mark says:

    shudup you grumpy old grandpa!

  58. Pen Island says:

Muse And Radiohead are probably the only “recent” bands that i listen too because of their originality and respect for the classics

  59. Tom says:

the jonas brothers ruined hello goodbye for me.. they murdered an excelent song my the beatles. now whenever I hum it, people ask me what i’m humming, i tell them, and they say i’m humming it wrong.

  60. Potato in Flight says:

This is a perfect example of what happened to Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Right Round”. Kinda. I can’t imagine anyone trying to rip off the music video though.

  61. Noah121 says:

Most of the new songs that attempt to incorporate parts of older hits into their music usually seem to fail in my mind. Some I can handle, like the techno-ized version of “Valerie” that I sometimes heard at halftime of Northwestern field hockey matches, or “Don’t Stop The Music” (has the mamase mamasa mamakusa lick from Michael Jackson).

My favorite “covering” of music is when a concert band, jazz band, big band, or pep band plays the song. I could care less about the words of most songs.
