My occupation is student and I get up at 5pm. I love night classes. Now to become an artist.
We all make sacrifices for our careers.
i agree. im an artist of art and i get woken up by my mom a 11 am…tops..sad, isnt it ?
artist = painter or musician? Because My gf is an artist and she definitely doesn’t get up that late.
I know I don’t get up that late, and I’m a graphic designer. I’d love getting up later though. :/
I’m a professional photographer and I wish I could wake up at that time!
Correction: if the doctor and the lawyer are even remotely successful, the secretary is getting up half an hour BEFORE them.
amen
Funny, my hubby (a doctor) is at work 30mins before his support staff…
Exceptions do not make the rule. Funny.
Being the secretary, I can honestly say I am scheduled and arrive 30 minutes minimum, before the lawyers.
Yes, but the secretary didn’t work 100-hour weeks for three to five years to get their job.
Wanna bet? I went to college for six years to get my job. Most secretaries have degrees if they want any pay above $8 an hour. An MBA is a good idea in this profession. Also you do your time in this job the same as any other – I worked 80-90 hour weeks working my way up the ladder, doing special projects and weekends, and did that for at least ten years.
Congrats on working that hard just to be a glorified go-fer.
Wow. And not the good kind of “wow”.
Can i screenshot this and post it on the failblog?
CAREER FAIL
nice
what exactly does “special projects” include?…on second thought, i probably dont want to know…
I think some people have no idea what a secretary does — or how much money a good secretary gets paid. Hint: less than the average doctor, but a lot more than the average lawyer.
That’s only if they’re sleeping with the average doctor or lawyer.
YUP
I have never worked in an office where the lawyers or execs got into work before the secretaries. Major flaw in your chart there.
^^Truth. Support staff is always in the office before 8. Execs roll in after 9.
More education = later arrival time?
Why do people have to start a fight in EVERY comment section? :-/
Because we’re big and bad when we’re behind a computer screen.
I made a chart about this.

Hopefully the link works.
accurate
I’ve worked for lawyers and for engineers for 25 years. I’m a secretary/office manager and I’m usually in hours ahead of them. maybe it’s a Caleefornee thang.
hehe i’m a hobo
I just noticed that this graph isn’t funny. Funny.
There hasn’t been a funny graph on here for months now.
True, maybe we could see more math based graphs. I love it when XKCD fans get bent out of shape.
and how many have YOU submitted?
Over 9000.
I…..just…..yes. Just, yes
Its ok, I’m an artist.
As an artist I have to say… it is funny, but also… keep in mind that we stay up till about5-6am
I know, Warcraft keeps you up all hours.
I WISH! I’m an animator… I might be MAKING the future Warcraft! (Ps. the ones at my school who play games all night or party all week are the ones that fail and drop out… intense school that makes you cry!)
I work security. My wake up time is 8pm
Of course, my bedtime, is closer to noon.
I’m a freelance hobo and I get up much earlier than that!
This graph isn’t even remotely accurate. There are way more than 5 occupations in the world. I’m outraged.
I know! There are like…8!
Just curious what the joke is supposed to be here. Is it funny that artists wake up later than hobos? I’d imagine I’d have a few things to do if I were a hobo during daylight hours. It looks reasonable to me.
But sorry, once you have kids this graph becomes meaningless anyway.
I know, ever slept outside? You tend to wake up at dawn regardless of what time you went to sleep. I’d think the hobos would be up and cracking with the rest of the waking world.
This.
Hobos wake up so early that by the time you see them at 11am sleeping they have lived three days and need a nap.
A hobo has to make it in time for McDonald’s Breakfast!
Hells yah! They stop serving breakfast at like 4:00AM now lol..
The hobos in my area tend to get up quite earlier then that.
as an artist, I can say, that’s about right. but there have been days when I get up later then that
I get up at hobo time evidently. I’m a very successful designer… who says you gotta get up early to rock socks? Also… video conferencing. All I gotta say about that one.
Well, I’m lazy, homeshooled AND an artist, and already I’m waiting until 10:00-10:30 to get up. So, if I can just finish school… :3
Oi, me too!
Since when is being a hobo an occupation? I want to start studying now so that when college comes up, I’ll be more equipped to earn my degree.
Actually, I’m An Artist and I Absolutely HATE Sleeping In. It Wastes WAAAY Too Much Precious Time
No kidding. This graph must be referring to “starving” artist. All the artists I know with thriving careers get up somewhere between “doctor” and “lawyer.”
Why are so many people being so disrespectful toward artists? Is it because you don’t have any creative talent and you’re jealous? Or because you’re bored and don’t have anything better to do?
We make enough at our jobs we have spare time to do it.
I don’t know if that comment was supposed to be ironic…
Best to keep your mumblings to yourself, then…
Go to hell, I’m a Visual Merchandiser=Artist. I get up at 4 and sometimes 3 am to go to work and work 9-14 hour days. Your little graph is stupid and rude and reinforces stereotypes that we are all lazy pot smoking fee-loaders. I’m not, none of the artists I have ever worked with have been. Grow up jerk.
Putting up pre-fabricated POP at the Home Depot or Lowes does not make you an artist. Nice try, but FAIL
fee loader is the opposite of free loader
The hobos in my town need to get up early to pick up the natty ice cans the college students leave all over their lawns
Damn… I’m an artist and I wish I could get up at 1pm. I have to get up at 6am. Lame.. who are these lucky 1pm artists? Probably freelancers.. yeah.. lucky freelancers.
Disney and Dreamworks. Creativity involves late nights and Hemingway-esq binge drinking.
I’m a college student on break doing art commissions for some money this summer and I tend to get up at 10~11 am but go to bed around 2~3. Getting up later doesn’t necessarily mean you spend less time working.
what can I say? we’re dreamers.
Father Guido Sarducci had a bit about this–become an artist. You can sleep later than most anyone–even priests.
when I was a freelancer I didn’t get up until noon usually, but that’s also because I would be in the theater for rehearsals or dress rehearsals until 1am. Now I have a job that makes me be there at 9am. I wish I was freelancing again.
A better graph would have been of “unpaid overtime”
I’m an author. It’s pretty much the same as an artist. It’s good to call it an “occupation”, because at the moment it just occupies me, doesn’t make me any money, so it’s not a job. But I do get up around noon each day. Just have to love when they’re willing to pay you more for the late shift at the store when you prefer it anyway.
That is simply not true! I am a designer and, except the weekends, I wake up around 10 – 11 am! :-p
How cool is that!?!? My previous comment appeared to have been posted at 8:12 am…of course, that would be cooler if I lived in the USA
)
well i’m a professional doctor and i usually roll out of bed at like 1 or 2, hungover. thank god i’m not an artist, i would never be able to handle the pressure.
Yes, thank god. I spent most of last year designing Siemens imaging equipment. Think of how much harder your job would be without a CT machine. /sarcasm
I still went to work at 11-12ish. But rolling in late doesn’t equate to leaving early. Artistry is a noble profession. EVERYTHING is designed first. Enjoy that car you drive in buddy.
wow, maybe the reason there hasn’t been a funny graph on here in months is that it’s filled with all these very important artists who have to get up so early in the morning? i wouldn’t have a sense of humor either if i were that sleep-deprived.
Pah, lies!
I’m a digital painter and waking up at 4am during late spring/early summer is common for me, just to get some work done before the sunlight comes beaming into my room (can’t stand blinds + giant windows). Also the early mornings are quite beautiful.
And the best part is I WANT to be an artist
Through I probably won’t sleep in that late ’cause I get really (I blame my anger management) grumpy if a wake up later than 9:00 AM XD
Its funny how the income for these jobs is the inverse of the graph.
Of course, the hobo job might be closer to the doc and lawyer.
i get up the same time as the hobo….O.o
And that is why I’m an artist…Well actually I sleep till 3 or 4…
WTF ever, idiot.
that comment wasn’t directed at the previous posters, but to the graph creator
I think you reversed Lawyer and secretary?
