This would be funnier if it was funny.

    • Jefoid says:

Yeah, wouldn’t that have been funny?

      • CAPM says:

        That would be two funny.

        • kodos says:

it’s not “That would be two funny.” it’s “That would be too funny”. also, i have played various rock music for 13 years now and in the past six there has been a major uprising in bands who call themselves “heavy” or “metal” and most should either not play music OR label their band “shit” the point i’m making is this is funny and, obviously, you just couldn’t understand why because you spent too much time over-analyzing it.

  2. Flare says:

You know there actually are good metal songs, right?

  3. Setagana says:

Define heavy metal. Are you talking simply about bands such as Sabbath, Maiden etc etc or are you mistakenly using heavy metal to describe the entire metal industry? Either way your graph fails. Nowadays no bands call themselves heavy metal bands (loads call themselves metal bands, even when they have no right to, but not heavy metal) and there is still metal that’s just as good if not better than the metal made in the 80s.

Please try not to talk smack about metal if you have no idea what you’re talking about.

  4. Sinatra says:

as a metal fan for years I’m not going to even touch this one…

i don’t know what you base this on but i find this to be misinformed.

  5. MissLace says:

    Wasn’t this one in UPCOMING?

  6. ferris says:

WTF? Who says Hannah Montana isn’t good?
    I friken love her!

  7. papajon says:

I agree that it kinda all depends on one’s definition of “metal”. I mean geez, back inthe 80’s they wanted to burn “Styx” albums as the ‘devils music’.

Having lived through the 80’s IMHO, most ‘metal’ hair bands were kinda “meh” and most kids at the high school save us freaks could take it or leave it.

BTW, I still have a copy of ‘Blizzard of Oz’ in the plastic yet!

Today, well, a lot of bands its simply hard to categorize. So I say why bother! Listen to what you like. I have every Genesis album known to mankind on my iPod along with Floyd, the Police, Maynard Ferguson, Barry Manilow, the soundtrack from ‘The Incredibles’, Tim McGraw, Weezer, Green Day, U2, Mozart, Chicago, Korn, Zepplin, Peter Gabriel, Bob Marley, Blues Brothers, Boyz 2 Men, and I really don’t care one freakin’ iota what other people think about my song list! :) I lIKE IT!

    • Cuisine! says:

I like that you listed only a few relevant bands. Bob marley and mozart are hardcore metal you know…

  8. yaya says:

There is still good metal being made, but only by bands that were already around in the 80s/90s

Early nineties was the last time young bands actually bring something innovative and interesting to the table… Now it’s just an emofest.

Rage against the Machine, first smashing pumpkins albums, first korn albums, early Deftones, Soundgarden, back then it was just metal…

Now it’s just a lot of time spent trying to define 18 different genres just to cover up the lack of good new bands =]

    • Curmudgeon says:

I like when I shake my nano and “Chutes and Ladders” gets followed by “An American in Paris”

    • Alzarahn says:

I have to stop you there. There has been good metal made since then, it’s just obscure. The real problem is the genre doesn’t have the popularity it once did. Let me enlighten you all.

GOJIRA – Technical death metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, groove metal. Gojira is a French heavy metal band formed in 1996 in Bayonne. The band was known as Godzilla until 2001. Their debut album Terra Incognita was released under the new name in 2001.
      LISTEN TO: To Sirius

BLOODBATH – Death metal. Bloodbath is a Swedish death metal supergroup from Stockholm formed in 1999. Breeding Death, released in 2000, is their debut EP release, followed two years later by their debut album Resurrection through Carnage.
      LISTEN TO: Eaten

LAMB OF GOD – Groove metal, Metalcore, Death Metal. Lamb of God is an American heavy metal band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 1990. The band was originally known as Burn the Priest and decided to change their name shortly after the release of a self-titled debut album in 1998.
      LISTEN TO: Redneck

JOB FOR A COWBOY – Death Metal, Deathcore. Job for a Cowboy is an American death metal band, formed in Glendale, Arizona in 2003. They released their first EP, Doom in 2005. Their official debut album, Genesis, was released in 2007, peaking at #54 on the Billboard 200 and selling 13,000 copies in its first week.
      LISTEN TO: Martyrdom Unsealed

DECAPITATED – Technical death metal. Decapitated is a technical death metal band from Poland, formed in 1996. After releasing two demos, the band signed with Wicked World (subsidiary of Earache Records) and released their debut album, Winds of Creation, on May 23, 2000.
      LISTEN TO: The Negation

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD – Extreme metal. Strapping Young Lad (often abbreviated SYL) was a Canadian extreme metal band formed by Devin Townsend in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1995. The band started as a one-man studio project; Townsend played most of the instruments on the 1995 debut album, Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing. By 1997, he had recruited permanent members; this line-up, which consisted of Townsend on vocals and guitar, Jed Simon on guitar, Byron Stroud on bass, and Gene Hoglan on drums, lasted until the band’s dissolution. The self-titled Strapping Young Lad was released on February 11, 2003, and became the band’s first charting album, entering Billboard’s Top Heatseekers at #97
      LISTEN TO: Love?

      • Dan says:

        Cool Wikipedia copy/paste, bro.

        “Enlighten,” indeed.

        • Alzarahn says:

Indeed I did. And I don’t see a problem with that in the least. Go find another way to try and be snarky.

      • Ryan says:

If I were to reccomend some other songs by these bands, because I think Redneck is a terrible representation of Lamb of God, and I’ve never been a big fan of To Sirius, I would say listen to Laid to Rest or Walk With Me in Hell for Lamb of God and Ocean Planet, Backbone, or Vacuity for Gojira

    • Setagana says:

Sorry to burst your bubble but RATM, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, Deftones and Soundgarden aren’t metal at all.

There are also plenty of good new metal bands in the industry, try Warbringer, Daath, Brain Drill and Devildriver. If you don’t like actual metal then that’s fine, but don’t say there aren’t any good new metal bands if you consider Deftones and Korn to be metal.

  9. yaya says:

btw sorry english isn’t my native tongue.

  10. hammer says:

    just bad…

  11. Liandri says:

Fail. Metal has never been better and will continue to evolve. All I can see on this chart is ignorance.

  12. angrygazebo says:

Rotate those charts 90 degrees and you’ve got The Horns.

  13. Gustav says:

This graph is missing the 1970 column.

  14. It’s not about the quality of the genre declining, but about the ammount of crappy bands surfacing. Cheap, affordable beginner gear ruined the quality of metal

  15. Tommy says:

I give you a five for the OMGWTFBBQ reference, haha.

    WADA WADA WADA!

  16. MK1K says:

DragonForce FTL, that garbage band can’t make one mediocre at best song.

    • feckineejit says:

I suppose you can play something better then? oh what’s that you can’t oh okay STFU!

      • MK1K says:

You idiot, nice fail of a comeback. They can’t even play their own songs. They speed them up for the studio version; that’s why they’re terrible live. They’ve actually been caught playing dead guitars to a recording. Along with that, all their songs sound the same, and the lyrics sound like an 8 year old boy made them up.

    • CrashTestGenius says:

Yeah, Dragonforce is boring. They do one thing: play fast. And that’s it. It’s cool to listen to for about ten minutes, then it all blurs together. Their songs sound the same to me, and the drummer is boring as hell to listen to (being a drummer myself). It’s impressive, but not tasteful or good quality music.

      • Setagana says:

People who knock Dragonforce make me laugh, cause I can’t get rid of the feeling that they just don’t get it. Everything I’ve seen about these guys indicates to me that they’re just out there to milk fame for all it’s worth and to travel around the world getting $h|tfaced drunk every night. They’re not out there to make perfect music like everyone seems to assume, I think they’re out there just for sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

  17. feckineejit says:

The music industry changed the definition of heavy metal. The Jonas brothers is not heavy metal. 3 doors down, nickelback, creed, etc ARE NOT HEAVY METAL. They are Rock.

Scar Symmetry, DImmu Borgir, In Flames, Decapitated, Deicide, Slayer, etc. ARE HEAVY METAL and do not suck if you like real heavy music. By definition, real heavy metal is: some lunatic screaming, some guy mashing away at a bass, a guy shredding a guitar and an animal banging away at the drums like he’s trying to kill them dead.

    • zombie says:

Hmmmm, sorry but I got to disagree with you.
All the bands you named aren’t heavy metal either. They’re Thrash, Death, Black, “Melodic Death” and so on.
Also heavy metal is not about lunatic screaming. Look at Iron Maiden. No lunatic screaming at all. More like listening to an opera singer. ;> That’s the roots of “heavy metal”, even when Iron Maiden is called “Power Metal” today…
But whatever, all those genres change weekly anyway… ^^
I could kill myself if I hear something like “melodic death metal” Urgh!

      • feckineejit says:

hmmm, sorry you sound like a douche when you say that.
like I said, the definition of heavy metal has changed.
The definition of a genre is subjective aswell, sometimes the fans deicide what genre to call it.

I’m generalizing of course, but what is truly metal goes by many different genres, but what the music industry thinks metal is, is not. If it can be played on MIX 98.1 IT’S NOT METAL.

Nickelback and all that ‘rock’ is just frat boy music.

        • Setagana says:

Nope, Zombie’s right, heavy metal is a specific sub-genre of metal which only lived and breathed in the 70s and 80s. Nowadays it is used interchangeably with the word metal (denoting the entire metal industry) by people (such as yourself?) who don’t know the difference between the two. Metalheads don’t care what terminology the rest of the world uses, we know what heavy metal is and we know what bands are metal and what aren’t, so for people who actually know what they’re talking about the definition hasn’t changed at all.

    • winternets says:

Bonus points to you for mentioning Scar Symmetry.

  18. Nightwish? Tarja? Epica? Xandria? After Forever? Tristania? Krypteria? Delain? Sirenia? Visions of Atlantis? To-mera? Elis? Unsun? Seraphim? In This Moment? Stream of Passion? Slipping Tongue? You tellin me that these are bad?

    • feckineejit says:

Nightwish? they’re ok Tarja? who? Epica? meh Xandria? who? After Forever? YES ROCK! Tristania? who? Krypteria? who? Delain? who? Sirenia? who? Visions of Atlantis? who? To-mera? meh Elis? who? Unsun? who? Seraphim?who? In This Moment? YES ROCK! Stream of Passion? who? Slipping Tongue?who?

thanks, now I have ten new bands to check out tonight!

      • monnanon says:

Tarja was the lead singer with nightwish, her solo stuff is ok

      • CryWolf says:

And also Kamelot – Epica got their name from one of Kamelot’s albums. Blind Guardian. Mystic Prophecy. And too many others to name.

I will say that Dragonforce is getting better. They seem to be slowing down, which lets them do stuff other than wail on the instruments, and the singer is staying more within his range.

For fun, compare early and recent albums by some bands, such as Amorphis and Therion.

    • monnanon says:

I don think you have listed any heavy metal bands here but almost all of them are brilliant bands. most are the symphonic rock (nightwish and epica) and tristania and sirena kind of border on death metal.
Heavy metal is the likes of judas priest, Iron maiden and the likes.

What i will say about this graph is maybe heavy metal has got worse but there are a lot of brilliant bands that have sprung up around it that make up for that.

  19. jazzbandblog says:

Maiden is Metal (I call it real metal-British Metal)
Maybe Heavy Metal but the graph is pretty correct-if you look at the crap thats coming out like Dragonforce etc then you see what I mean.

And no no-one has ever tried to say Jonas Brothers are metal! Idiot

  20. YouveJustGotButchered says:

Ehm… Wtf? Ever listened to Necrophagist? Nile? Wretched? Have you even ever listened Heavy Metal at all xD?

  21. Eden says:

    Metal lives on…. in Europe!

  22. Kumori says:

Clearly the creator of this particular graph hasn’t listened to Red.

  23. bree says:

    one word dethklok

  24. M/K says:

    >_>

Nile? Behemoth? Kreator? Sonata Arctica? Opeth? Mastodon? Cynic? Iced Earth? Children of Bodom?

None are similar and yet they are all considered ‘metal’.

All of these bands are amazing and have albums released in only the last two years or so. Next time, consult some sources first.

  25. austinreynolds says:

Metal is still pretty awesome. Metallica put out a new album last year. Dream Theater is still making music. And for those that say all new metal bands suck, have you ever heard of Protest the Hero?

  26. daji says:

    @rulezdaworld0
Wow I’m proud to know some of those you mentioned. I’d ad Kamelot.

  27. Vieve says:

I won’t involve myself in the argument about what is or isn’t metal (which has many of its own categories: heavy, death, thrash, etc.), but I will say Heavy Metal is the best adult cartoon ever made. Heavy Metal 2000 is meh.

  28. asdfyourqwerty says:

then apparently slipknot is friggin’ sweet :D

  29. Ralf says:

Falconer, Bal Sagoth, Helloween, Edguy, Savatage, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Isengard, Apocalyptica, Bathory, Borknager, Danzig, Entombed, Exhumed, Finntroll, Galloglass, Goat Horn, Hammerfall, Iron Savior, Korpiklaani, LORDI, Morbid Angel, Nile, Onslaught, Powergod, Rage, Rhapsody, Rivendell, Satyricon, Savage Circus, Thor, Vintersorg, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zimmer’s Hole.

Halfway through, I kind of decided to do an A-Z of bands which I have listened to, and consider to be, at a minimum pretty decent. I tried, with some success, to not re-mention any that have been previously listed. Also, almost every band on that list has at either started in the last 10 years, or released an album in the last 5.

You’ll notice that most of my listening is either Power Metal, or Prog power, with a smattering of Norwegian black and/or viking metal. However, the overarching idea of any -blank- metal genre is that it is, at its core, metal.

Metal is as alive and strong today as it has ever been. \m/

  30. Kraas says:

There is still good Metal around today, it’s just obscure. Which only makes it cooler.

    • Kraas says:

Let me qualify my previous statement: a lot of it is obscure from a United States point of view. Gamma Ray et al are probably not considered obscure in Europe.

  31. I thought the hot new thing to call your crappy band was “indie”. Or is that old news already?

  32. J Hopeless says:

apperently you havent scratched the surface deep enough to find good metal. The “mainstream” metal is very crappy and bands like disturbed, dragonforce, and avenged sevenfold should just stop calling themselves metal cuz they arent at all heavy. But there are bands like Lamb Of God, Daath, and Bring Me The Horizon which would, hopefully, make you reconsider your graph. You can’t tell me that sucky bands like poison sound better than Lamb Of God unless you are experiencing some wierd mid-life crisis or something.

  33. Matt Wix says:

Lamb of God. All That Remains. Bring Me The Horizon (To an extent).

    I rest my case.

  34. Brad:D says:

    1990s metal was awesome! pantera!

  35. lunar says:

Apparently this graph was made in 2000.

  36. Jerky says:

With shitty core bands around I get where the poster was coming from. Though their are exceptions like Killswitch Engage and Unearth, most of these suck harder than Trivium. Also all deathcore bands suck. There is nothing hardcore about the hardcore genre and the bands that are in it, not even the two good ones I mentioned

  37. Uzigawa says:

    haha, hannah montana, hilarious

  38. jon says:

    its a joke graph people!

  39. Brooke says:

There is a band called Band, Them, and Yes. I love talking about Them.
    “I just LOVE Them!”
    “Who”?
    “Them!”
“Who is that? And where are they?”

  40. Cyrill says:

not so funny but it is true

  41. rawr... says:

I for one like Rammstein…but no one ever asks me. Not exactly metal…see, we need to quit naming bands in genres and need to start just telling people to listen to the dang music. Most of the time, I’ll listen to a band and they’ll grow on me. I have some Jamie T., Why?, the Zelda Twilight Princess OST, Rammstein, and a heck of a lot of other things on my list too…JUST BECAUSE I LISTENED TO THEM INSTEAD OF SAYING “OH THAT’S (insert genre here for easy quotation) AND I HATE (reinsert).

    Geebus.

Oh, and I for one don’t quite like Hannah Montana, because she has no talent. Cute though.

  42. KEVIN says:

BACK IN THE 80S IT WAS IRON MAIDEN ,OZZY ,JUDAS PRIEST MUSIC LIKE THAT. NOW THAT WAS METAL

  43. Daniel McLaurin says:

    M-E-T-A-L-L-I-C-A

  44. Lars Ulrich says:

Sad But True. New Metal bands (and Nu Metal) are nowhere near as good, with few exceptions.

SOAD, Disturbed, and A7X (after the screaming phase) are good, but nobody else really is. Luckily we have awesome old-school bands that are still rocking hard! Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath), Megadeth, NOT GUNS N ROSES!, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, etc. are still kicking ass! And of course us from Metallica are too! \m/

  45. Marekatt says:

So that’s where South Park got the theme for the hallusinations in the cat urin episode!

  46. Eokeer says:

What does the BBQ of OMGWTFBBQ mean?

  47. Death to all but METAL!

  48. KM says:

heavy metal is a subgenre in the bigger metal genre. they should never ever be mixed!

bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne (to some extent), iron maiden and dio etc. is heavy metal. i would never ever dare calling Children of Bodom, Slayer, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames A7X, Turbonegro, Pantera and others for heavy metal!
the era of heavy metal is, in my case, over. this is the time for new genres and for new bands. metal is EVOLVING! some emtal is more commercial, or even too comercialized (sorry, my english sucks, and i say sorry if this aint a real word). i dont like metallica (take one) because all my “gangster/wangster” friends seem to like them, and i need music that i can call “my own”.

the term heavy metal can also be argued. should for example led zeppelin be called heavy metal? many people claim that led zeppelin was the founder fo heavy metal, others claim black sabbath, personally i think that black sabbath perfected the music and therefore started the term heavy metal, but the music was actually created by the heavy blues industry.

i also think that metal can be defined, or atleast have some minimum requirements:
    they need technical skills
they got to be 100% able to play their songs live
    heavy drums
not too fast, slow is actually awesome (reffering to pantera) but fast is okey too, shouldnt be sounding very impressive or impossible to play. but it should fit in to the songs (referring to bodom, iron maiden etc.)
i dont like ballads, they are boring. and by no means any love ballads
    variated
and at last, they should have serious themes in their songs… no bullshit crappy the world is “perfect, and i am happy therefore i love you” bullshit!

  49. Rekaoi says:

Funny graph, made me laugh; It’s also very true.

  50. Jake says:

well today every one lissens to that slobbered guy or something, and spinning a head around, WTF
    I listen to METALLICA WOOT
I have mostly rolling stones and metallica and some other new aged metal thats not all just screeming in to the microphone
