the “myth is proven” part probably should be between little and some. and also the only reason i watch mythbusters is to watch stuff get destroyed and for the insanely cool explosions… my personal favorite was when they blew up that cement truck they accidentally over filled and left nothing but an axle and some twisted metal and a smoking hole in the ground. oh and also watch for tori getting hurt… friggin hilarious

*forces you to watch the MacGyver special* All but, like, one or two were proven. The reason for the occasional “well this ended up entirely matching what the myth said – myth busted!” is because of wording. Proving if it’s true/possible or not has nothing to do with busted and confirmed. Considering it’s called “Mythbusters,” they like to word it so that their estimation of the results will cause it to be called busted, a lot of the time. For example, “Will pop rocks and soda make your stomach explode?” is worded differently from “You can survive ___.”

Mmm, I wouldn’t call it science. I call it awesome, but “good science” is researched and controlled and reproducible.

I’ve just done Science Honours and I strongly approve of Myth Busters, not because of their rigorous scientific method, but because it might get some kids interested in science Science — at least in the biomedical area — is much less awesome on a daily basis, and the breakthroughs come after a team of a dozen scientists have been working on the same thing for 5 years! No asploshuns for us.

It’s not the angle that did it. The initial tests involved firing perpendicular to the water, and the kill zone ended around 10-12 ft down. What matters is the amount of water the bullet has to pass through, and the velocity, size, and shape of the bullet. Changing the angle only changes the depth you have to dive to.

They may not admit it on the show, but they are teaching science. In the real world, young scientists don’t get everything right the first time. By leaving in mistakes and misconceptions (sometimes they look intentional), junior scientists get used to the idea that they have to start small and refine.

They say “don’t try this at home”, but the real goal is to encourage kids to try something. However, that something should be closer to Diet Coke and Mentos, than to cleaning a cement truck with dynamite.

I’m just a math nerd, but my brother and his wife are science teachers. They strongly approve of Myth Busters.

Anyone that watches it enough to like it enough to make a graph about it should at least know that 1. It’s confirmed not proven and 2. It’s far more often than “never”

Actually, there was a Myth that was proven. It’s the one about jumping the water to avoid gun bullets. As long as it’s at an angle, and the gun is NOT straight above you, you are safe from the bullets.

Dang, I think I missed that one..
Oh, another good one was the hwacha; it’s a medieval Korean weapon that fires, like, 200 flaming arrows at once… and, yes, it works. That was amazing to see. And I was so happen for them that it worked, that put a lot of work into making the thing. ^_^

Yeah, it’s:
Busted: Obvious; they couldn’t make it happen (at least without ramping things up to a ridiculous degree you’d never see in real life, and sometimes not even then).
Plausible: They’re able to make it happen using the required, realistic parameters, but there’s no reliable source saying it ever happened in “real life”.
and
Confirmed: They showed it could happen, plus there are reliable reports of it actually happening in “real life” (the exploding jawbreaker was one of those).

It’s easy to bust myths because it takes less effort. Why do you think the kids get all the really involved ones, and the ones involving outside experts, explosives, wreakage, etc are all Adam and Jamie’s?

If Adam or Jamie gave a crap about doing a good, thorough job of it they wouldn’t have left 3/4s of the show to an idiot, a math nerd and a piece lens candy.

Right off the top of my head I can think of two myths that were proven fairly dramatically. The “exploding jawbreaker” (and part of one hit someone in the eye!), and the “using an eye patch to be able to see in the dark”. It didn’t involve anything exploding, but the difference between with and without the eye patch was just astonishing.
