  1. Cecona says:

while I agree with exploding part, I disagree with the myths confirmed part

  2. frank says:

i’d say the “myths proven” column is pretty much accurate. i love that show but sometimes it’s literally “well this ended up entirely matching what the myth said – myth busted!”

    • frank says:

i mean “myth is proven”, but you get the idea.

    • Mae says:

      No, they’ve confirmed quite a few… it’s pretty inaccurate.

Anyone that watches it enough to like it enough to make a graph about it should at least know that 1. It’s confirmed not proven and 2. It’s far more often than “never”

    • Sunshine says:

*forces you to watch the MacGyver special* All but, like, one or two were proven. The reason for the occasional “well this ended up entirely matching what the myth said – myth busted!” is because of wording. Proving if it’s true/possible or not has nothing to do with busted and confirmed. Considering it’s called “Mythbusters,” they like to word it so that their estimation of the results will cause it to be called busted, a lot of the time. For example, “Will pop rocks and soda make your stomach explode?” is worded differently from “You can survive ___.”

  3. jmurockstar says:

    graph needs more Kari.

  4. V Gard says:

Is there a problem with that?

  5. Hotjoe says:

Actually the myths get proven quite a bit on this show. Especially for a group that sets out to *bust* the myths.

  6. Will says:

Close, but I think this graph really nails the Mythbusters pattern: http://mine.icanhascheezburger.com/view.aspx?ciid=3941384

  7. fish eye no miko says:

Right off the top of my head I can think of two myths that were proven fairly dramatically. The “exploding jawbreaker” (and part of one hit someone in the eye!), and the “using an eye patch to be able to see in the dark”. It didn’t involve anything exploding, but the difference between with and without the eye patch was just astonishing.

    • Adeline says:

Don’t forget the helium tank that went through the wall (and almost went through a 2nd). THAT was impressive.

      • fish eye no miko says:

Dang, I think I missed that one..
Oh, another good one was the hwacha; it’s a medieval Korean weapon that fires, like, 200 flaming arrows at once… and, yes, it works. That was amazing to see. And I was so happen for them that it worked, that put a lot of work into making the thing. ^_^

        • Mae says:

Or the boat trailer still hooked to the boat, they had a boat salesman confirm that he’d seen it happen himself.

          • BoringTroll says:

I was most surprised by the elephant’s strong reaction to a mouse.
I doubt that the elephant was afraid of the mouse, however, it might have been afraid of getting mouse guts stuck to the bottom of its feet.

  8. onoma says:

    it’s ‘confirmed’ not ‘is proven’

    have you ever seen mythbusters?

    • fish eye no miko says:

      Yeah, it’s:
Busted: Obvious; they couldn’t make it happen (at least without ramping things up to a ridiculous degree you’d never see in real life, and sometimes not even then).
Plausible: They’re able to make it happen using the required, realistic parameters, but there’s no reliable source saying it ever happened in “real life”.
      and
Confirmed: They showed it could happen, plus there are reliable reports of it actually happening in “real life” (the exploding jawbreaker was one of those).

    • Tanja says:

      Exactly!

A myth is confirmed, never ‘proven’.
So the graph is correct, but does not make sense.

  9. JR says:

I think they need a line for the number of things that everyone knows is true that they accidentally disprove, i.e. poison ivy gives you a rash, gas vapor burns etc.

    • wildwood says:

Poison ivy only gives MOST people a rash. The reason: there’s no poison, it’s just an allergic reaction that most people have.

  10. CC says:

there should definitely be more confirmed myths…but I guess technically the graph maker was right, because they never do say “myth proven”

  11. wit says:

It’s easy to bust myths because it takes less effort. Why do you think the kids get all the really involved ones, and the ones involving outside experts, explosives, wreakage, etc are all Adam and Jamie’s?

If Adam or Jamie gave a crap about doing a good, thorough job of it they wouldn’t have left 3/4s of the show to an idiot, a math nerd and a piece lens candy.

    • BoringTroll says:

They may not admit it on the show, but they are teaching science. In the real world, young scientists don’t get everything right the first time. By leaving in mistakes and misconceptions (sometimes they look intentional), junior scientists get used to the idea that they have to start small and refine.

They say “don’t try this at home”, but the real goal is to encourage kids to try something. However, that something should be closer to Diet Coke and Mentos, than to cleaning a cement truck with dynamite.

I’m just a math nerd, but my brother and his wife are science teachers. They strongly approve of Myth Busters.

      • Andrea says:

Mmm, I wouldn’t call it science. I call it awesome, but “good science” is researched and controlled and reproducible.
        .
I’ve just done Science Honours and I strongly approve of Myth Busters, not because of their rigorous scientific method, but because it might get some kids interested in science :) Science — at least in the biomedical area — is much less awesome on a daily basis, and the breakthroughs come after a team of a dozen scientists have been working on the same thing for 5 years! No asploshuns for us.

  12. Skyfire says:

Also need “Tory or Adam hurt themselves”.

    • i can haz a chezze burger lover says:

yeah, for exsample, adam burning off an eyebrow and tory falling off the swing

      • Flare says:

Or Adam cutting his lip on a vacuum motor, or adam getting shocked by the build team in the ancient electricity myth.

        • Nick says:

Or Adam getting shot with a penny gun or Adam getting hit with a baseball or… I just realized how much Adam gets hurt on that show.

  13. DragonRider says:

Actually, ‘Myth Proven’ and ‘Myth Plausible’ should be bigger.
But all in all, a nice graph. :)

  14. Aegis Runestone says:

Actually, there was a Myth that was proven. It’s the one about jumping the water to avoid gun bullets. As long as it’s at an angle, and the gun is NOT straight above you, you are safe from the bullets.

    MYTH PROVEN.

    • wildwood says:

It’s not the angle that did it. The initial tests involved firing perpendicular to the water, and the kill zone ended around 10-12 ft down. What matters is the amount of water the bullet has to pass through, and the velocity, size, and shape of the bullet. Changing the angle only changes the depth you have to dive to.

  15. Walrus. says:

It’s funny, because in one show they never blew anything up in it, so the just kinda took something, rigged it with explosives and blew it up because they were bored. Best goddamn job in the world.

  16. burningled says:

    1 — It’s myth CONFIRMED, not proven.
2 — It does occasionally happen.
3 — There needs to be an ‘Adam/tori injures themselves” column.

  17. jzimbert says:

Where’s the column for “20 minutes of clips previewing things that will happen later or recapping stuff that already happened”?

  18. Dexaan says:

Also needs a “Jamie wants to smack Adam and everyone can tell” column, although it’s not as obvious in the later shows.

  19. forge says:

You forgot “Kari is onscreen and most male and some female audience members completely blank out and don’t care what else is happening.” Or is that just me?

  20. Robert says:

And what is not awesome about wiping things off the face of the earth?

  21. ben_waz_here says:

the “myth is proven” part probably should be between little and some. and also the only reason i watch mythbusters is to watch stuff get destroyed and for the insanely cool explosions… my personal favorite was when they blew up that cement truck they accidentally over filled and left nothing but an axle and some twisted metal and a smoking hole in the ground. oh and also watch for tori getting hurt… friggin hilarious

  22. Eärossë says:

Random Info of the Day: Adam once said on an episode of MythBusters that the episode must end in an explosion, it’s in his contract.

  23. Marilyn K says:

    isn’t it confirmed…not proven..? have u ever seen mythbusters…?

  24. Nerdandproud says:

    They prove some myths. Really.

  25. Cimerax says:

More myths were confirmed than you know, dude.
    Also, explosions kick ass.
