  1. Seddah says:

    Sexism fail.

    • biscuit says:

agreed. what about us fanGIRLS who thought the source material was way better?lol
for ex. Twilight? the movie was ok, but the book was 10 times better than the movie. and don’t even get me started on how bad the Eragon film was.
      *barfs*

      • 123 says:

Twilight, the book, wasn’t very good. Twilight, the MOVIE, was absolutely, puke-inducing horrible.
I didn’t see Eragon, but I’ve heard it was really bad.

But it IS true. The movie industry messes up some of the best books ever. I have never seen, and probably never will see, a movie as good as the book it was based on.

        • Shin says:

2001 A Space Odyssey: Based on a simple short story, turned into gold by Kubrick.
Blade Runner: The book was quite good, but so was the film, and personally, I liked the latter even better.
The silence of the lambs – I didn’t read the book, but it cannot be possibly that much better than the film.
          etc.
So the ARE exceptions. No excuses for guys like Uwe Boll.
Unfortunately, nobody seems to try making movies based on games with a good and unusual story such as Planescape Torment or Deus Ex.

          • acamori says:

I never had a chance to read blade runner, but the movie was quite good.
There are many good adaptations but for every good one there seems to be several bad ones.

Then there’s the case where they start out strong then screw it all up, like they did with Hitchhiker’s guide. My friend and I concluded that since Douglas Adams was helping until he died mid-production, the director must have said: “sweet, the author is gone we can do whatever we want now!! WHEEEEE!!”

            • JM says:

The thing about book-to-film adaptations that most filmmakers miss is that they’re supposed to be making a FILM. Instead, they try to make a visualization of the book, and in trying to be too faithful, or in trying to bring the book technique into film, they mess up. Stanley Kubrick was able to match up to the books he adapted so well because he didn’t try to recreate what couldn’t be created on film, and instead gave the story elements that only a film can give. And it worked wonders.

          • The Lord of the Cows says:

            No excuses for Watchmen.

          • bkimax says:

            Hwz bout The Godfather?

        • villy says:

Eragon wasn’t terrible when I saw it, as I hadn’t read the books yet.

But….then I read the books and got all pissed off at the movie.

And I agree about Twilight. I’ve seen better fanfiction by 13 year old girls.

        • Hailey says:

Dude, seriously, you need to find a girl with a brain. I hated Twilight with a passion. I read science fiction, I collect graphic novels, and I watch anime. And don’t assume it’s all Fruits Basket and Buffy, because I wouldn’t touch that crap with a ten foot pole.
          Fangirls unite!

        • SleazyP says:

Eragon was an ok job, Twilight sucked (both movie and book), Eragon book is way better though
And the Alex Rider movie was one of the worst movies ive seen, he doesnt meet the girl until the 3rd book but in the first installment of the movie he meets her instantly

    • Nostawyn says:

Amen! I’m a girl and I always drag boys to the premieres. And then afterwards, I usually loudly complain that the movie wasn’t as good as the original source material. I demand equal-opportunity nerd-dom!

    • Cowpie says:

      stupid girl fail XD

    • i hate everything says:

      arrogance win.

  2. Exactly… I’m with the mayority

  3. dexomega says:

Personally I think that most Movie Adaptations are bogged down in so much CGI that I could cry.

    • hmph says:

There probably wouldn’t be so much CGI if it weren’t for the fact that it is FANTASY and SCI-FI… yes, I think we could get this actor to swing from a spider web around a big city… oh yeah, and we certainly could get people to fly and smash walls and throw cars and oh yeah, how about we make this other actor fly while on FIRE!!! Yeah, we’re screwed if that takes more than one take… and if we want him in any of the rest of the movie… suck it up dexomega. Without it, we have what? Muppets… I LOVE Muppets… but it cuts into any drama.

      • Hailey says:

Not necessarily. Gillermo Del Toro makes a lot of sci-fi/fantasy stuff, and he mostly uses costumes and make up and green screens. Which is why his movies amazing.

        • hee hee says:

Guillermo Del Toro- checked out his filmography- I have only heard about Pan’s Labrynth but I saw Hellboy- While it is possible to do many things with makeup and blue screen (even though normally you can spot a BS shot from a MILE away), CGI is an awesome tool that adds much. Having someone stand and deliver a line (emoting) while on solid fire from head to toe is probably best done with some CGI as well as the stretching of mr fantastic or some other super hero/super bad guy stuff.

  4. I lose says:

In case of the new Dragonball movie, only one option would be availabe…everyone.

    • acamori says:

yeah….I’m not sure how I feel about that one. The commercial I saw made it look like it had almost nothing to do with (any of) the show(s).

  5. J says:

Well, sexism fail in the graph, different sexism fail in the comments.
Seriously, to the other females out there: Twilight? You think you’re going to defend your nerd-dom with TWILIGHT?
Eff Twilight, it’s crap in any form.
Please don’t make the world associate ‘female nerds’ with freaking Twilight.

-From an actual female nerd that LOVES science fiction, just read through ‘There will come soft rains’ again during her last cigarette, has worked with video games for 2+ years, has a Star Wars tattoo, and HATES TWILIGHT.

    • villy says:

*timidly raises hand* Can I please still be a female nerd if I don’t like Star Wars?

    • tyler says:

… i think i fell a little bit in love when i read “HATES TWILIGHT”.
Thank you, for giving me hope for humanity/females everywhere. :)

    • Nostawyn says:

Amen to you, too! I cannot stand Twilight. When I demanded equal-opportunity nerd-dom, I was thinking more along the lines of Resident Evil and Watchmen (off the top of my head). I love sci-fi and fantasy and action movies. Twilight was a god-awful chick-flick. Also, your tattoo sounds awesome. Don’t care what it is, if it’s Star Wars, it’s probably awesome.

And how’s this for nerdy–My username is the Quenya (or possibly Sindarin) translation of my real name. I had my name in elvish on the back of my senior jersey and even had the initials of my full name in elvish on the sleeve. The only reason I didn’t bring that up in my first comment was that I was afraid that Lord of the Rings might look stereotypically girly. And then people brought up Twilight. . .

      • J says:

God, Lord of the Rings… I ended up reading those books because my dad read me the Hobbit as a bedtime story when I was little. <3

I am probably the most proud of my Star Wars tattoo, and I’m considering getting more. But right now I’m just representin’ with the symbol for the Rebel Alliance.
(Fun trivia: After a Sonic Youth concert a couple of years ago, an excited drunk man ran up, yelled that he loved my tattoo, showed me that he had the same one on his back, then high-fived me and ran off.)

    • Hailey says:

      More Leias, less Bellas!

    • Nika says:

And you just named my favorite Bradbury short story.

I’ll chime in with the female geekdom power! What is this crappy attitude that girls only like fantasy (if anything at all) and boys like science fiction. Some of us women types love science fiction; even ‘hard’ sciences like Asimov and Benford, not just the ’softer’ science fiction of Bradbury, Ellison or Farmer.

The graph fails because it doesn’t reflect more than a pale stereotype of the fandom for the genre. Fangirls can be just as rapid and scary as fanboys.

    • tyler says:

you. sexy. no like twilight= hot. :P

  6. SleeeeepyGirl says:

Um, wouldn’t it be a sexism WIN? If the comment and/or pie slice is sexist, then sexism wins the day.

Sexism equality for girls and boys

  7. carry says:

seriously? no comments on WATCHMEN? that was my first thought when i saw this graph. as far as twilight goes, personally i thought it reached the level of failtacular (a fail so epic it’s almost a win). i was laughing so hard i nearly cried

    • Yellow says:

I thought Watchmen was turned into a movie in a good way. I enjoyed it very much and I think its the best sci fi novel to movie i’ve seen so far.
It’s just that theres just so much more content in the novel.

      • Christine says:

Except for the change of the ending changes the meaning.

        • Nostawyn says:

I know! Why did they even bother changing it? Wasn’t the acronym of Ozy’s evil plan still S.Q.U.I.D.?

          • Hailey says:

I didn’t mind that so much. I minded the other change at the end. The Rorschach one. In fact, they changed a whole lot about Rorschach that I took issue with. So much so that his heartless determination was lost. I also didn’t like that Dr. Manhattan had to tell Laurie about her father, rather than her
being smart enough to puzzle it out. The opening sequence was amazing, though.

            • Nostawyn says:

I actually like Rorschach in the movie, though they did change quite a bit. And I had forgotten that Dr. M had to tell her. Yeah, that’s kind of annoying, too.

And when you say “opening sequence” do you mean the channel-flipping? Because that confused the heck out of everyone who hadn’t read the gn in the theater I went to.

  8. Crimson says:

Wow! All of the other girls beat me to it! I’m a girl, and I love not just books but also comic books and video games. Way to go girls! We’re awesome! Oh! And @ carry, I did read Watchmen and then saw the movie and I was very pleased with how it came out! I was weirded out by their change to Ozymandias’s plan because I didn’t really see a need for it, but in general they did a fantastic job!

  9. Adeline says:

Understanding of fanbase fail. There are plenty of Females and Fangirls who enjoy comics/books/video games. I am one, and I know many.

Oh wait. We women don’t exist on the internet.
/tired of everyone assuming I’m a guy when I talk about HTML/Computers/Comics/Video games
//Even makes a point of choosing usernames that are fairly feminine.

    • villy says:

I’m a HUGE WoW geek. And I’m always amused when people insist that there are no girls on WoW.

I always feel bad for my best friend. Oddly enough, she’s probably one of my ONLY friends that is a “girly girl”through and through, and not really a nerd in any respect. Then on the odd occasion she comes out with me and the rest of my friends, and we start talking about games, coding, building computers.. hehehe

      • tyler says:

i’m a guy (just clarifying, probably guessed from the name blah blah…)
and there are LOTS of girls on wow /wink
my GF moved away 13 months ago, we use WoW to talk most of the time, and we’re better than ever :P
of course… sooo not true for most raiding guilds, adeline. i’m a tank and LOVE PvE, i’ve noticed that the ratio of level like 20-70 or PvP 80’s is WAY higher than any real raiding group.

  10. Faetal says:

The book was WAY better than this graph.

  11. Wolverine Girl says:

There was another group missed out on this graph – people who complain about the movie before it even comes out. Just look up ‘Deadpool’ on any forum remotely related to the soon to be released Wolverine movie, and you’ll see what I mean.

    • Hailey says:

Well, really! It looks awful. I’m going to go see it, because I’ve been waiting for Gambit to show up, but I will complain about it for days afterward.

  12. Betsyville says:

    Watchmen.

  13. troggy says:

this one isn’t funny because it is true…

  14. Aiffe says:

    Sexism fail thirded/fourthed/millionthed.

I’m a girl, and I’m pretty much unbearable to watch any adaptation with, because I won’t stop bitching about how the book was better. Especially Lord of the Rings, don’t get me started. And I get more into this stuff than a lot of fanboys I know.

Also, the women who tried to make a case for Twilight are also failing. Twilight is not geeky. Twilight is a bodice-ripper with fangs. It’s your business if you happen to like it, but don’t embarrass the rest of my gender, please.

  15. Yosh says:

First off, pie charts are not absolutes. Secondly, these days, “fanboy” is an androgynous term these days. I don’t see a sexism fail.

And I have yet to see a movie that is true to the book/comic/video game. Except maybe X-Men. But that’s debatable.

    • Nostawyn says:

You can argue that “fanboy” is a gender-neutral term (though I prefer “fanBRAT”) but the graph also says “Females dragged to the movie premiere”. That is decidedly not gender neutral and also implies that women don’t go to sci-fi/fantasy movies by choice. Adding the term “fanboy” on top of that gives an overall impression of sexism.

I’m trying to really jump on anyone; I’m just seriously annoyed by this kind of thing. Literally this morning I had to tell my Spanish teacher off for saying that Die Hard is just for boys.

      • Nostawyn says:

*NOT trying to really jump on anyone.

        Sorry.

      • ladykitteh says:

I agree with you wholeheartedly, and may I just say I’m a little offended by the use of the word “females”? WTF, why not just type “women” or “girls”? This implies we’re a different species since the word has animal connotations, which I find very sexist.

        • Yosh says:

Females is not a connotation for different species. It’s a general term describing the sex of a person. Most women I know are highly offended if called “girls.” I suspect it’s just easier to say females.

        • foohy says:

Get over yourself. You wanna know why there is still racism and sexism in this world? It’s because women and racial minorities BOTH interpret so much as being offencive. Female/woman/girl/lady/etc. ALL mean the same thing, basically.
So we’re not sexist OR racist…it just happens that people of a different race or gender generally piss us off with their attitude…race and gender don’t really play a role there.

          • Nostawyn says:

There are still racists and sexists in the world, you know. It hasn’t disappeared and that’s not the fault of the people who are being discriminated against. I’ll concede that people can be over-sensitive (and that this isn’t really ‘discrimination’) but you have to realize that it’s really infuriating when people assume that general-you can’t do/won’t enjoy/don’t know something because general-you are a girl. Surely that goes the same way for boys, too?

    • Hoshi says:

X-men failed too, in a lot of ways. Did anyone else read the comic or watch the show? WTF was up with ‘phoenix’ GAH, it is NOT her alter ego. They ruined it sooo badly.

    • i hate everything says:

i have to agree with that.

  16. The Lord of the Cows says:

And they say fanboy like it’s a bad thing.

  17. FL910 says:

dis graph iz irrelavent to mah interests

  18. snokful says:

Sexism fail, uh huh? There are a ******LOT****** of women into genre fiction, despite stereotypes like this.

  19. Legion says:

Not every graph is about you, you know.

  20. Hoshi says:

Graph Fail. At least say Otaku, or Fanatics. Something that encompasses everyone of every gender.

  21. Josh says:

This graph isn’t as good as the book version of it was.

    • Faetal says:

… worded differently but along the same flavor as my earlier post.
Thank you for having a sense of humor.
I think the elastic’s a little tight on the pantyhose around here
      >.>

  22. Really? says:

Really? Where did all these girls come from, and why are they all so whiny? It’s a graph, and saying fanboys and including you all in it is a lot like saying, “Hey, guys”. It’s not a big deal, so calm the eff down, eh? Ooggittybooggittywut.

    • Alex says:

No one likes being discriminated against.

    • Yosh says:

Agreed. Which is what I was saying in my earlier post.

    • Nostawyn says:

Look up and see my reply to Yosh. “Fanboys” can be gender-neutral, “females” cannot. And I don’t know about the rest of the girls on here, but I’m sick and tired of going on sci-fi/fantasy message boards and having everyone assume I’m a boy, and I’m sick and tired of going to sci-fi/fantasy(and action) movies with a guy and getting pitying looks, as if _he_ dragged _me_ there.

      • Hailey says:

Once again, Nostawyn, you hit it on the head. The offensive part wasn’t so much the term ‘fanboy’ as it was ‘girl friends dragged along.’ And where did we come from? We’re always here, dumbass.

        • Nostawyn says:

It’s infuriating, isn’t it? If I’m not the one dragging someone else along, I’ve at least agreed to see the movie without having to be persuaded. And I’m always the one sitting through previews saying “Oh! We are _so_ going to see *insert name of upcoming sci-fi/fantasy/action film!”

          • J says:

And I’m the one begging my husband to dress up for nerdy movie premieres with me .__.

(I also went to the Phantom Menace premiere painted up like Amidala… before that movie crushed everyone’s dreams.)

  23. Doc says:

Only reason the stereotype even EXISTS is because movies do normally suck compared to their original sources. Harry Potter, Eragon. Even the Hellboy movies weren’t as good as the comics.

If they mess up ‘His Majesty’s Dragon’ from the Temeraire series, I’m going to have to kill someone.

    • Yosh says:

The stereotype that’s being whined about is the graph maker used the words “females” and “fanboys” leading to a complaint about sexism between who does what when it comes to the movies.

      • Doc says:

And the only people who manage to notice the fact that the movies suck compared to their original source is women, apparently.

  24. Hailey says:

I agree! Total BS! I was the only person who dressed up for the Watchmen premiere, and I was just as disappointed as every other nerd. Total sexism fail.

  25. I LOLed. says:

Cut fanboy slice down to about 1/3 its size plus half of the ‘females’ slice, the rest becomes ‘angry parents enraged that a movie based on a comic book/video game is inappropriate for their young children.’

  26. foohy says:

Sexism fail? Wow. Are you serious? Fanboy doesn’t mean fanBOY it just means an obsessive fan…you probably think refering to humans as “mankind” is sexist to, huh?

    • Speedz says:

Uhhh… Dude… Fanboy may not just be referring to fanBOYs, but I’m pretty sure “Females” are like girls or something like that…

  27. >_> says:

This is one of the whiniest comment sections I’ve ever seen on the intarwebs. Ever notice how this only happens when you neglect something regarding women? The graph maker clearly needs to pay better attention to them, lest they rise up and whine about it endlessly. Lol.

  28. Alex says:

Calm down. The graph doesnt say every female hates these movies, or even every female that goes to one of these movies hates it. It simply says that whatever portion of complainers that is represented by the slice is made up of girls who were dragged there by her boyfriend/family/whatever.

Who knows, the graph could only be about 50 people, and the slice would only represent 5 or so girls who were dragged there and then complained.

People need to stop being offended by everything.

  29. Bugg says:

    Ugh…
Ok,I’ll start with the fact that this graph is accurate EXCEPT for the fanboy part should be changed to “fanboys / fangirls” AND the females part should be changed to “girlfriends / boyfriends / friends ”
Just so it’s not too specific and less likely to offend. =)

  30. Mark says:

Okay… Max Payne, the movie, was definitely NOT as good as the game. And I;m not a fanboy, just a fan.

  31. Zephr says:

Okay, seriously, I kinda get the idea that females having to be dragged to these movies is offensive, but are there actually women here complaining that they didn’t get insulted along side the boys?
Fine. If you nitpick about comic to movie conversions you’re annoying regardless of gender. Happy?
Also, why did the creator bother to include video games on this graph? Has there ever been a video game based movie that wasn’t so awful that everyone would be in the green wedge on the graph here?

  32. i hate everything says:

    arrogance, you’re doing it right.

  33. i hate everything says:

Would you quit posting stuff about a “sexism fail”?

  34. Spectre514 says:

I do agree, movies cant be 100% but they do need to be in the ballpark, examples: Lord of the rings, excellent movie, and definitely in the ballpark.
Eragon, Terrible, completely ruined the possibility of sequel or remake for years, bastards.

  35. criton38@hotmail.com says:

great stuff, but not always true… go see Dragon Ball Evolution O_o

  36. faunablues says:

Strangely, I didn’t notice the sexism part until reading the posts. I expected to be the complaints to be about the fact that there’s a pie slice for “people who thought the film sucked” in a graph that is basically about people who thought the film sucked. Maybe the poster wanted to self-identify in the graph without admitting to being a fanboy.

And on the subject of sexism, “fanboy” is not a gender neutral term, and neither is “mankind.” That’s why people say “humankind.” It’s specific for boys/males. To assume that “boy” or “man” can be gender neutral is to say that maleness is the default, femaleness is the exception. I.e., “fangirl” would never be seen as gender neutral, of course it would be specific to women.

Also, I don’t find the term “female” offensive, especially when it’s meant to encompass both women (adult) and girls (child). Male/female is probably the most removed/scientific way to describe sex (well, save for calling someone “XY” or “XX”), which is why it’s used for animals as well. Sharing terminology with other species is not degrading, it’s science. It’s kind of annoying when we have different words for humans vs. other species (like necropsy vs autopsy), just for the sake of having a different term and not “debasing” people to “that level,” whatever that means.

    • tyler says:

agreed on the third paragraph, but on the gender neutral bit, i differ there- look at twilight, that’s where i think “fangirl” the most, but if a guy likes it, i don’t think fanboy, i still think fangirl- in my opinion, which term is used should probably depend on which gender it is more accepted by in huge majority (if it actually IS loved by a huge majority of one sex)

  37. jaq says:

I’m pretty sure the red bit could eb changed to “fanboys who want to show off how much impressively useless knowledge they have by mentioning the source material”

  38. tyler says:

hug me. please. :P soooo agreed. -tears at hair- THEY AREN’T SUPPOSED TO SPARKLE DAMNIT. THEY’RE SUPPPOOOOOOSSSSEEEDD TO BE COOL!

  39. tyler says:

females… girls… women…. ALL plural for a female, girl, woman, whatever term you use, NOT an insulting term just a word for god’s sakes…. did he ever say “the easily herded females of the tribe” or “the impressionable females” yes, it is a slightly more distanced, scientific, direct definition word, but that doesn’t mean it automatically implies that you are all drones.

  40. Suzannah says:

I also complain about that. If you’re going to do a movie about a beloved book series that the fans are going to see, DO IT RIGHT OR NOT AT ALL DAMMIT!!

  41. Courts says:

I completely agree!!! i love sci fi and i’m female

    second nomination for SEXISM FAIL

  42. chyschumake says:

oh, WOW. how about fanGIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!! and i totally agree. lots of movies (such as TWILIGHT and HARRY POTTER) stink compared to the book. in my opinion, JUST READ THE STUPID BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. chyschumake says:

    SEXISM FAIL!!!!!!!!!!
FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i tell you what, what is wrong with being a girl or a nerd?????
    I DO NOT KNOW!!!!!

    • Eärossë says:

I am a proud female partial geek, and I agree with you. The movies are NEVER as good as the books

  44. Angi M says:

I just watched G.I. Joe and I was so pissed off I couldnt stand it anymore. It was nothing like it it should have been! I mean , come on Dennis Quaid playing G.I. Joe .It should have been Steve Austin or someone like him with balls. Please let me know if you agree !

  45. Isabelle says:

You know it says females “dragged” to the premier. Obviously if you went of your own accord, you weren’t dragged. Also, writing fanboys is easier than writing fanboys/fangirls (Though I suppose they could have just written fans). Arguing this point is stupid because that is not the point of the graph. Just enjoy it instead of whining about it.

By the way, I am also a fangirl. Thankfully, I have better things to do than whine about sexism.

  46. Mushroom Win says:

So basically you’re saying that people who thought it sucked, say that it sucked.
