I never learned much to help me, in college. That’s what’s so sad.

  2. EmoMuncherMusicMan says:

they have cool explosions. I wish I could’ve died in one of those cement trucks…

  3. Jeremy says:

Switch around Mythbusters and Wikipedia and you have my experience, although the unit of “Albert Einstein” is certainly unorthodox. ;)

  4. Rocko says:

I would like to see where mythbusters and wikipedia will get you on a resume. Has anyone tried this?

  5. Rhodizzle says:

If you reverse Mythbusters and Wikipedia, then add another measurement named “Stephen Hawking” and add Google at that level, that would be my chart…

    • chimmeychango says:

ok, you guys do realize that neither adam nor jamie have a background in science. they are both artists and entertainers, not chemists or engineers. sure what they do is fun, and it somewhat resembles science, but their experiments are not usually conclusive or accurate. i don’t know if anyone else has noticed the new “sciency” shows that keep popping up on the discovery channel and the learning channel ect. but i for one find it disturbing that people are so willing to trade science or edutainment. i think we already have enough confusion to start half assing on all things scientific.

      • Jefoid says:

The fact that they make a passing attempt at using the scientific method makes Mythbusters more educational than 95% of the crap on the air. That it is not sufficiently rigorous for the average Graphjam commenter doesn’t take away from that basic fact.

        • chimmeychango says:

miseducational? i mean, if you give someone bad information, no matter what the intent, its still bad information. not to mention their lack of science might mislead naive people into not taking science seriously. and no matter of good intent takes away from that basic fact.

          • Scott says:

It’s called making learning fun. Sure it may not be “by the book”, but the concepts are there, and it is probably the most educational thing the average person will see on any given day.

            • Daemon says:

The average american would rather watch a series of explosions to the music of benny hill, rather than a discovery channel documentary on trees.

              • 42 says:

yeah, because most of us aren’t going to need to know the groth of TREES per year. When we HAVE free time we want to watch something we LIKE, not a boring documentry on trees. ‘Nuff said.

          • Jefoid says:

You are aiming too high. MOST people believe magnets have curative properties. MOST people believe St. John’s Wort has medicinal value. MOST people believe that tapping on the top of a tin can will prevent it from spraying when opened. Any show that advocates actual experimental learning over blind ignorant acceptance is a good thing.

            • chimmeychango says:

you just made my point for me. bad science distorts reality for the average person, making it easier for the unscrupulous to take advantage of them. democracy requires an informed and informed, educated, and involved populous.
if we keep telling half truths by showing people half science half funjutainment
we will have no truth left at all. i think its better to not try to involve science and just blow things up. and let me say i actually enjoy watching the show myself.
it is fun, they are smart and goofy guys, and the blow stuff up.

      • Failer says:

I agree. As a scientist myself, Mythbuster experiments in general just make me sad. Or rather, the supposedly solid and definitive conclusions they come up with from a not-so-solid, not-so-scientific “experiment”.

        • Bee says:

Blowing things up doesn’t always solve the problem, does it?

        • famboyjad says:

You know, they welcome criticism of their processes and tests. If you believe that one of their conclusions is incorrect and can argue why, they’ll retest. They do it all the time.
Apparently their standards are much more rigorous than the show presents. They just can’t fit all of their findings and processes into a one hour show. And besides, the 95% of people discussed above probably wouldn’t care. Anyway, I watch it when I can and find that most of their conclusions mesh pretty well with previously established findings from more scholarly sources.

      • Razakel says:

It might be anecdotal, but people get into the scientific fields not because of the science programs on the television (generally, at least). They get into them because of the idealization of them in movies, books and television. How many archeologists are there because of Indiana Jones, versus a Discovery documentary. That is the big issue, I think. Getting people to see that you should actually try, and you don’t have to be a Ph.D. in astrophysics to do anything approaching science, which has always been the focus of my science teachers, but truthfully how many students listen to their teachers?

    • ClickClick says:

I believe there is room on Television for a show that debunks the Mythbusters. Or supports them with further information.

Come on, producers, make this show! (don’t make me come over there!)

      • chimmeychango says:

yes click, or even a crawler at the bottom of the screen that has more or more accurate info. that would be winz!
