Is it just me or does this guy get a lot of intruders? 10% is a lot.
Also, 10% + 40 % makes only 50%, what else will the dog bark at and why isn’t it included in this graph?
I think it’s supposed to be read as; if there’s an intruder, there’s a 10% chance the dog will bark and a 90% chance it won’t. If the dog spots a chipmunk or a mirror, there’s a 40% chance it’ll bark, 60% chance it won’t.
I interpreted the graph the same way as you at first too. I think the concept’s a bit poorly executed.

I was about to say the same thing…if this was a pie chart (which it should have been, using percentages), the other 50% would be missing. This person really didn’t think this thing through.

My old dog would bark 80% of the time, if a leaf fell in the back yard. 15& at the squirrels that caused leaves to fall, and 5% at whoever was at the front door.

it’s not a pie chart. it’s a bar graph. bar graphs do not need to equal 100%
But it is a probability graph, which leads me to wonder what the other options are that add to probability of 1.
its the probability that the dog will bark at a given event, not the probability that a given bark is due to a given event.
in the latter case, you would need to get to 1, that is, a given bark is 10% at intruder, 40% at reflection, 50% at X.
in this graph, it depicts that if there is an intruder, there is a 10% chance the dog will bark at the intruder, 90% chance it wont.
40/60 for the reflection.
you could have this add to 10,000 and it would be ok.
now for any given bark, perhaps there is a 1% chance the dog is barking b/c of an intruder. the title would likely be “Probability of Cause for My Dog Barking”.

Clearly the dog. The chipmunk is a hypothetical one with no known gender.

The word “his” is often just a generic pronoun. Also considering that the authors dogs gender is never mentioned, one cannot be certain. This is why I mentioned it. I’m not being a smartass, I’m just pushing for proper grammar and idea conveyance.

There is only one dog being discussed, thus any gender-specific pronoun is known to be the dog. If just one squirrel were being discussed, THEN you’d have a point.
I believe the word ‘a’ does signify one.
