(This is for every one who thinks calculus is easy, hope you guys got the joke) The problem that many people have with calculus, and with other real world problems, is that they struggle with creating a mental picture and attack strategy. This is crucial to many things in life, including I would say magic , and many subjects such as this one aim at developing this skill within us. And I really love the graph, it’s cool and funny!

And to adorableheiron, I know someone who could solve differential calculus equations in their head but couldn’t rearrange a simple formula. I’m the same, though at a lower level. I can do most algebra and basic calculus in my head easily, but give me a basic facts test and a time limit and I’m screwed

Unfortunately, once you get advanced enough in calculus, it’s the “hard” part that’s easy, and the algebra that will cause you hours of pain and suffering on your problem sets. Thank goodness for Mathemagica.

However, this graph is exceedingly accurate. I find calculus fairly simple, personally. HOWEVER, a word of warning.

Never thing too hard about calculus. If you do, you get a headache and the meaning of life dissolves.

This is the result of trying to take away the magic.

The “why” is taught a couple years after the “how”… inbetween, the power law &c stuff is indeed magic. I never took the “why” classes, so it’s still magic. Or would be, if I ever actually used it.

Funny is in the eye of the beholder, just like sexual harassment.
If I think it is funny, than to me it is!
If a girl (or guy) thinks they been harassed, they have! It is the perfect revenge.

Humor and math are also great revenge. Revenge is highly under-rated.

It’s the way it’s taught, I think. Often, the first few steps are taught in detail (evaluating limits, using limits to find derivatives of simple functions, etc), but then, starting with the Power Rule and going onward, most of the actual calculus is just taught as memorization. “This derives to this and integrates to this,” type stuff. ..Sure, it all does make sense, when you read and understand the proofs for why they work that way, but if you don’t – and it certainly isn’t taught in classrooms – it does seem like magic.

Honestly, do you people have nothing better to do with your lives than brag about your “Mathematical intellect” on a website all day? Quite frankly, most of us don’t care if you can easily figure out complex equations or not. And really, I’d like to see how many of you actualy are good at Calculus, or if your just saying it to hide the fact that you can’t even solve a basic Algerbra problem.

(Yes I realize that by posting this and saying that people have no lives because they post comments on a website all day I am being a huge hypocrite. I apologize.)

I once had a teacher for engineering thermo who forget that we don’t all have Ph.D.s like he does.
