  1. da kill says:

    First time saying first here.

  2. ZomB says:

    Mathemagic!

  3. Destin says:

I’m afraid I don’t get it. Is it because I actually understand calculus?

    • Phaelin says:

Yep. For most, the algebra of calculus is easy, but somewhere between using the Shell/Washer method and the answer, most get lost in the mix of things. Our professor? He can immediately jump to a conclusion and expect us to do the same. By “our professor”, I mean just about any professor teaching calculus anywhere. But Calculus is silly. Calc II is way different, thankfully.

    • scott says:

Yes, that and it’s not funy. Calculus “magic” only exists if you have no idea what you’re doing.

I give up. I am officially removing GraphJam’s feed from my reader.

      • Jess says:

Well… not all of us are smart enough to get Calculus, or even basic algebra, so for us, math of any kind might as well be magic. Some of us just aren’t wired for math.

Way to be an arrogant douche there, killerer.

      • 7t0ll3rz says:

very sorry to lose you’re reeder ship. it is spelers like you that make reading the commints so funy

      • Apersondude1 says:

Hey, I’m good at Calculus, and I still find this hilarious!

        • Alex says:

          I second!

          • h4xx0r says:

            Thirded!

            • Intyalle says:

Fourthed! Not that that word exists, a fact my spell check is happily pointing out. :P

However, this graph is exceedingly accurate. I find calculus fairly simple, personally. HOWEVER, a word of warning.

Never thing too hard about calculus. If you do, you get a headache and the meaning of life dissolves.

This is the result of trying to take away the magic. :P

              • Legend says:

nthed! (This is for every one who thinks calculus is easy, hope you guys got the joke) The problem that many people have with calculus, and with other real world problems, is that they struggle with creating a mental picture and attack strategy. This is crucial to many things in life, including I would say magic :) , and many subjects such as this one aim at developing this skill within us. And I really love the graph, it’s cool and funny! :D

                Legend

                • Liza says:

(n+1)thed. I dont really know how to say it but since its all about math it should make sense ^^
I do like this joke, too))) i think that as calculus gets more complicated, we are forgetting the basics. Like it would take me some time to recall how riemann sum becomes an integral.. you know. so, somehow math becomes magic we should just believe in ^^

      • DaftPyramid says:

Oh sush, I’ve 4-pointed every Calculus class my college offers, and this graph is hilarious.

    • Kooshy says:

It’s the way it’s taught, I think. Often, the first few steps are taught in detail (evaluating limits, using limits to find derivatives of simple functions, etc), but then, starting with the Power Rule and going onward, most of the actual calculus is just taught as memorization. “This derives to this and integrates to this,” type stuff. ..Sure, it all does make sense, when you read and understand the proofs for why they work that way, but if you don’t – and it certainly isn’t taught in classrooms – it does seem like magic.

      • Kooshy says:

        PS -

I find it hilarious, too! But because I think it’s the way it’s taught, hehe.

      • John says:

The “why” is taught a couple years after the “how”… inbetween, the power law &c stuff is indeed magic. I never took the “why” classes, so it’s still magic. Or would be, if I ever actually used it.

  4. Peter says:

    Umm…

Like scott said, no magic involved unless you have no idea what you’re doing. Not that funny.

Now statistics (or sadistics as i like to call it)… THAT is black magic my friend.

    • chekov says:

Agreed! Multivariable calculus is more fun than a bouncy castle, whereas the Sadistics and (grim) Probability makes one wonder why someone would do that to the wonderful entity of ‘math’.

I think the calculus magic happens somewhere between the beginning of integrals and before they show you the proper rules for doing them. In that time, it really does seem like diabolical magic!!

    • LHLD says:

i’ll do your stats hw if you’ll retake calc for me a third time…

  5. RJ says:

I think the point the graph is making is that if you don’t understand something as complex as calculus(or statistics) it seems like magic, in a toungue-in-cheek sort of way. Of course, you know this, naysayers, and you are just being pretentious. That is ok with me.
    I still love you.

I think I will print this and post it on the math teacher’s wall.

  6. Anon says:

    Its just plain not funny.

  7. Joao says:

pfft, I hate these arrogant peeps. I understand calc and still found this hilarious. Infact, I believe only who understands calc a little bit can find it as funny as I did, coz it’s a bit of a nerd joke. Arrogant people who think they know everything are the ones who can’t see any fun in this kind of graph

  8. ihavkittehs2 says:

I thought MAGIC was an acronym for something else – you mean it’s not??

    *snicker*

I thought it was cute. But I love partial differential equations.

  9. faetal says:

    HAHA!

I’m an accountant and LOVE this!

  10. Unit4 says:

This graph is so true. You could understand calculus, I know I do, and this is still funny. I couldn’t explain this to anyone else really… you just have to know the feeling yourself. Especially when your professor writes something up on the board and does something and looses the whole classroom for a few minutes before they all catch up… good fun really.

  11. Aegis Runestone says:

    This is SO TRUE.

  12. Yeah says:

lol “MAGIC” thats hilarious :) and why do people say “first” i don’t get it, its pointless

    • theta4 says:

because there’s tons of other people commenting on this picture or whatever, and they get the privilege to be the first one to comment! they want to show off….noobs.

  13. theta4 says:

Irony: i took my calculus final today :)

  14. Ty says:

You forgot shouting obscenities at the whiteboard filled with scribbles you thought were numbers when you were writing them.

  15. Jupiter says:

I’ll do the three math parts of calculus if the magic can be applied to my final grade :)

  16. ยฃcake says:

This wouldn’t work NEARLY as well if “MAGIC” wasn’t all-caps.

  17. Omega says:

There should be WAY more algebra than calculus on that graph.

  18. catgirl says:

Geez everyone, it’s a joke! Some people take these graphs too seriously. I understand calculus and I still think it’s hilarious. I once had a teacher for engineering thermo who forget that we don’t all have Ph.D.s like he does. Anyway, if you’re one of those people who needs this joke to be explained to you, then maybe you should stop visiting this site.

  19. Jessica says:

Oh come on guys, stop trying to look smart. I think this is hilarious, despite the fact that aced calculus and I tutored it (so not only can I do it, I can also teach it better than most calc professors).

It’s still freaking hilarious, just because it’s so true for most people. :-) I’m just a good magician.

  20. Fly says:

To all the people saying this isn’t funny because they know calc: can it pseudo-intellectual douches, and let people have their lolz. No one cares how smart you think you are. Why don’t we all list off our college awards and scholarships while we’re at it? Try taking 400-level physics courses and tell me there’s no magic there.

  21. Cory says:

Haha, I like math, but yeah I know there is some magic involved there…or divine intervention. Stats is much better.

  22. For the lulz says:

Give it up for the mathemagic

  23. adorableheiron says:

Honestly, do you people have nothing better to do with your lives than brag about your “Mathematical intellect” on a website all day? Quite frankly, most of us don’t care if you can easily figure out complex equations or not. And really, I’d like to see how many of you actualy are good at Calculus, or if your just saying it to hide the fact that you can’t even solve a basic Algerbra problem.

(Yes I realize that by posting this and saying that people have no lives because they post comments on a website all day I am being a huge hypocrite. I apologize.)

    • oh yes says:

More than see them solve algebra, I’d like to see them try to get a date. No chance any of them could even talk to a member of the opposite sex (or same who knows?)

      • Intyalle says:

That’s just being prejudiced. I’ve got a perfectly good boyfriend tyvm.

And to adorableheiron, I know someone who could solve differential calculus equations in their head but couldn’t rearrange a simple formula. I’m the same, though at a lower level. I can do most algebra and basic calculus in my head easily, but give me a basic facts test and a time limit and I’m screwed :P

  24. duvel says:

    It is funny! It is.
Funny is in the eye of the beholder, just like sexual harassment.
If I think it is funny, than to me it is!
If a girl (or guy) thinks they been harassed, they have! It is the perfect revenge.
“Hey, Tony, nice tie!” Ooops here comes the sex-a-hara cops!

Humor and math are also great revenge. Revenge is highly under-rated.
    And Sex-a-hara highly over-rated!
I think some are the vicxtim of math-a-hara.

  25. Seriously says:

Do you really need to be such elitists? So what if it’s not true? Is it funny? If yes, then the chart achieved its goal. If not, then be quiet, and take a look at a different chart.

  26. suirtem16 says:

Thats why the actual names of math professors are mathemagicians

  27. icanhascheezburger? says:

I didn’t feel like reading all the comments above… but god damn. Truest graph I’ve ever seen. O.o

  28. 80s says:

Always found this in quantum chemistry.

  29. Me!! says:

Statistics is the same way for me…

  30. Nerd_Girl says:

I think the whole graph should have a black overlay. And black, over in the key, represents HELL.

  31. mary G says:

    YES! SOMEONE GETS IT RIGHT!!!!
take ONE look at a calculus problem and the first thing that will pop into your mind is “What. The. Hell.”
p.s. will someone PLEASE tell me where the HELL in life ANYONE is going to use Caculus?! >:(

  32. John Curd says:

    auhsauhsauhsaushas… true… true….
