I have tried to get into D&D offline before, without much success.

The group older than me wouldn’t let me in The group my age would, but we were all newbies, including the DM who insisted on making his own campaign. -_- I never knew an entire underground cave system full of dragons could be so intensely boring.

The online group I’ve found since is far more interesting.

when we were 15 year old gamers we asked ourselves if we would still be playing at 40…the answer then was yes and….we are still playing (i be 41)

i found this amusing but on the flip side i find ‘jackass’ offensive

and this graphic has nothing to do with who is ‘trying to impress’ whom…if somone i know is trying to impress a 12 yo i am not going to game or associate with that person…as a matter of fact i do not game with tweens…lack of subtlety comes to mind but hey they have fun…and using their imaginations and not watching tv,,,

it is a fantasy role playing game that someone stuck the name D&D onto for marketing purposes.
the last DnD product was 3.5, which btw is far more versatile and better suited to shadowrun type urban adventures….

I also played Gamma World, Traveler, Aftermath, Car Wars, King Maker, and Mechanoid Invasion back in the day.

Of coarse the time I spent playing AD&D meant I ended up with a 1.8GPA my freshman year in High School. My Dad’s belt, a sudden interest in sports, girls, and Mary Jane helped me to graduate HS with a 2.4 GPA. woot!

Without us, there would be no RPGs. And I think it’s fair to venture that D&D is actually less nerdy than WoW (which I also play) or whatever video RPG, because it involves REAL social skills, actually being around people and hanging out. I’m going to teach my kids to play when I have some, lol.

I’m a 40+ year old D&D player and the group I play/DM with have, for the most part, played together since we were 12 and 13 year olds.

None of our kids think we’re cool…
… that said none of them think we’re child molesters either.

most of them just think “sweet! dad and mum are busy for the next few hours, we get exclusive use to the Wii and can steal their snack food”

Now that I think about it, adults playing D&D with kids is really the same as them playing a board game with kids. Or football. And, as in football, you’re going to play it differently with different mixes of age groups. 40 year olds will probably think twice about how rough they play if they’re playing with 12 year olds. But that doesn’t make it inherently wrong.

Plenty of us in our 30s and 40s and beyond that play D&D still. And many of us have no desire at all to play the game with 12 year olds. We play with adult groups.

Anyway, 12 year olds don’t generally have a high opinion of anyone. What adult in their right mind is trying to impress tweens?

Actually, I think the point of GraphJam is to use humor to point out the foibles of our society. This is specifically different from mocking or criticizing, where the point is largely to put down, not to make others aware.

Specifically, in this case, I think the graph does little but try to play off a tired stereotype of who plays D&D – losers and creeps. But given it’s prevalence in today’s culture, that hardly seems apt, and therefore the humor is kinda lost. The graph isn’t funny because it isn’t true. One doesn’t need to get riled up about that, just dismissive.

(Realize, too, you have to be pretty clever to make child molestation – even perceived child molestation – funny. )

Out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know a website to…I guess it would be a D&D group finder message board? I’m moving from Fort Bragg NC (The best place to play being the Hobbit Hobby Shop on Yadkin rd on saturdays), and I need to find people in the Fort Lee VA area to play with. So if anyone could give me any leads, that’d be helpful.
