  1. Gracie says:

I don’t think ANY 12-year-olds will think you are cool. Most of them don’t even know what Dungeons and Dragons is.

    • Here Kitty Kitty Kitty says:

not true! i play d&d (im in my 20’s) with people in their 40’s and several kids ranging from 8 to 16 are begging to play.

      • Slashydutchie says:

Yup, been playing D&D since I was about 11, nearing the 20’s now… I’m basically playing the game with people in the age range 8-50 or something like that.

        • Kit says:

We got my cousin hooked on D&D at age 11 too. The good news is I have many years left before I start getting odd looks for even mentioning D&D…
Until then… Roll your fort saves.

      • Intyalle says:

I have tried to get into D&D offline before, without much success.

The group older than me wouldn’t let me in :( The group my age would, but we were all newbies, including the DM who insisted on making his own campaign. -_- I never knew an entire underground cave system full of dragons could be so intensely boring.

The online group I’ve found since is far more interesting.

  2. Boumama says:

Wow. I do NOT want to try to make that saving throw.

  3. PapaJon says:

I tried really really hard, but no, I just don’t see the humor in this one.

    • GaMeS says:

      Gotta agree with you.

What about D&D makes you a child molester? The vast majority of people who play D&D are 18+, and I’d estimate that over half are 30+. In my experience, if a 12-year-old plays D&D and they find an adult who does, too, they think it’s COOL, not threatening.

Whoever wrote this is like that jackass who worked for John McCain and wrote this: “It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others.” Not only is it incredibly insulting (”mom’s basement,” saying we’re not patriotic) and completely unrelated to the topic (what the hell does supporting Obama have to do with D&D?), it’s INCREDIBLY misinformed — D&D players are more likely to be in the military than are those who don’t play D&D. Furthermore, I haven’t noticed a substantial correlation between playing D&D and political ideology (although we’re slightly less likely to be evangelical Christians, due to misinformation like this that scares them away). The wargamer crowd definitely skews conservative, and there’s a lot of crossover with wargamers and RPGers.

So, yeah. If you wrote this, go get a d20 and try not to fail your next save vs. stupid. (Same goes for whoever thought this was funny and inflicted it on the rest of us.)

On the plus side, both of you probably have a future at FAILblog. =)

  4. Kashmir says:

Most of us what used to play D&D have moved on to other venues.

    Tabula Rasa rules.

  5. cj says:

    WOW Rawks!

  6. Alorna Silvertree says:

Well, ok, try saying that to my 11 year old godson. My husband and I play DnD with him and his dad and mom most weekends. He has friends that hang out just to watch us play. Of course, my fey path half-elf warlock with an 18 charisma is pretty bloody cool. Yep, DnD nerd and proud of it!! Without us, there would be no World of Warcraft.

    • The Josh Man says:

Without us, there would be no RPGs. And I think it’s fair to venture that D&D is actually less nerdy than WoW (which I also play) or whatever video RPG, because it involves REAL social skills, actually being around people and hanging out. I’m going to teach my kids to play when I have some, lol.

  7. rawz says:

12 year olds, as well as the rest of the world.

  8. Celebrethil says:

Sadly I don’t make my plans based on what twelve year olds think is cool.

Or anyone else for that matter.

Then again, I’m not forty either, but forty’s not that old, and you’ll have to pry my Legos out of my cold dead hands.

  9. WWWWW says:

    Unfounded stereo-types FTW!

As someone else said….at 40, would most people give a damn what a 12 year old thinks about them? At least as far as “kewl” factor goes?

    :/

  10. Rasp says:

If you’re a 40 year old that is trying really hard to make a 12 year old think you’re cool maybe you have greater issues at hand.

Not 40 yet but I plan on playing D&D until they pry the dice from my cold dead fingers…. And truthfully I don’t even care if my kids think I’m cool… I play D&D not because it’s cool but it’s fun.

Plus if it weren’t for D&D I’d never have met my wife, who plays D&D.

  11. Michelle says:

    Not funny…

    In fact, very offensive IMO.

    • Viking says:

      /agree
Just because you don’t understand, does NOT give you the right to mock/criticize/commit hate crimes against. Are we reverting back to prehistory where we smash things we don’t like? Bad charisma save, buddy…
(Oh, and to clarify: you as in the graph-maker, not the person I’m replying to)

      • Geez says:

Isn’t the point of GraphJam to mock/criticize things in pop culture? Besides, the creator didn’t say they WERE child molesters, he said a 12-year-old would PERCEIVE them as such.

(By the way, comparing this to a “hate crime” is hyperbole of the highest order.)

        • Mark says:

Hyperbole is the BEST THING EVER!!!

        • EgoWumpus says:

Actually, I think the point of GraphJam is to use humor to point out the foibles of our society. This is specifically different from mocking or criticizing, where the point is largely to put down, not to make others aware.

Specifically, in this case, I think the graph does little but try to play off a tired stereotype of who plays D&D – losers and creeps. But given it’s prevalence in today’s culture, that hardly seems apt, and therefore the humor is kinda lost. The graph isn’t funny because it isn’t true. One doesn’t need to get riled up about that, just dismissive.

(Realize, too, you have to be pretty clever to make child molestation – even perceived child molestation – funny. )

          • GaMeS says:

            /agree

Making a joke like this would be like having a graph about how anyone who owns a computer must also own pocket protectors, slide rules, and horn-rimmed glasses held together by tape.

Oh, and then you add in “rapist” on top of that. Because all computer owners are geeky losers who clearly must be rapists because they never get laid. (Grasp.)

        • Kilbia says:

If you look in the archives, the original point of GraphJam is to express hip-hop and other musical lyrics in graph or chart form. Not that we’ve seen that in months…

        • Kilbia says:

    • Big Elly says:

      Offensive to child molesters maybe…

  12. thom says:

i agree, this isn’t funny at all.
hey let’s throw the words child molester on a graph. hilarious.

  13. Arg says:

Since when has anyone who plays DnD cared about how cool they seem to anyone? Sheesh.

Also, not 40 here for a while, but still playing. And I don’t think I’d want 12 year olds around for the game. How annoying that would be…

  14. GabbiiGore says:

Hahha. This is super funny, I know tons of kids who play D&D, I used to when I was little with my dad. =]

  15. 216 says:

    This graph is a…FAIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. SPCOsborne says:

Out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know a website to…I guess it would be a D&D group finder message board? I’m moving from Fort Bragg NC (The best place to play being the Hobbit Hobby Shop on Yadkin rd on saturdays), and I need to find people in the Fort Lee VA area to play with. So if anyone could give me any leads, that’d be helpful.

    • GaMeS says:

Try the “gamer classifieds” forums at Wizards of the Coast:

      http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=347

    • Here Kitty Kitty Kitty says:

dont know of a message board, but a good place to start is always the local comic shops and gaming stores. people gotta buy dice somewhere. good luck.

    • Kilbia says:

You might go to obsidianportal.com and see which campaigns are looking for players. (Though it might be faster to post on their forums.)

Obsidian Portal is a campaign wiki site.

    • faetal says:

you’d be amazed at how “coming out of the closet” (gamer style) will work in your favor in a new town.
make some friends and if you click just mention how much fun it would be to get a game going on.
      if they know anyone=win
      if they themselves play=epic win
      Worked when I moved.
And when it didn’t at least all my acquaintances know my dorky secret lol!

  17. Ham says:

Plenty of us in our 30s and 40s and beyond that play D&D still. And many of us have no desire at all to play the game with 12 year olds. We play with adult groups.

Anyway, 12 year olds don’t generally have a high opinion of anyone. What adult in their right mind is trying to impress tweens?

  18. EgoWumpus says:

Now that I think about it, adults playing D&D with kids is really the same as them playing a board game with kids. Or football. And, as in football, you’re going to play it differently with different mixes of age groups. 40 year olds will probably think twice about how rough they play if they’re playing with 12 year olds. But that doesn’t make it inherently wrong.

  19. marxz says:

I’m a 40+ year old D&D player and the group I play/DM with have, for the most part, played together since we were 12 and 13 year olds.

None of our kids think we’re cool…
… that said none of them think we’re child molesters either.

most of them just think “sweet! dad and mum are busy for the next few hours, we get exclusive use to the Wii and can steal their snack food”

  20. lizz says:

i would go with virgin rather than child molester.

    • Kilbia says:

Marilyn Manson’s autobiography has something to the effect of “If every cigarette takes seven minutes off your life, every D&D session prolongs the loss of your virginity by a year”.

  21. harry says:

I gotta roll my molesting save.

  22. GAMMAWORLD says:

The child Molester tag only applies if you play anything other than 1st ED. Rules.
IF your “old school” then its about staying true to TSR, not the moppets who have perverted the game to what ever it is now.

Why yes just turned forty. How did you know?

I also played Gamma World, Traveler, Aftermath, Car Wars, King Maker, and Mechanoid Invasion back in the day.

Of coarse the time I spent playing AD&D meant I ended up with a 1.8GPA my freshman year in High School. My Dad’s belt, a sudden interest in sports, girls, and Mary Jane helped me to graduate HS with a 2.4 GPA. woot!

    • cormag says:

my best GPA (honor roll) in HS was freshman year and i was stoned most of the time… i quit smoking (changed peer groups to stay out of jail) and started gaming and barely graduated…go fig.

  23. cormag says:

when we were 15 year old gamers we asked ourselves if we would still be playing at 40…the answer then was yes and….we are still playing (i be 41)

i found this amusing but on the flip side i find ‘jackass’ offensive

and this graphic has nothing to do with who is ‘trying to impress’ whom…if somone i know is trying to impress a 12 yo i am not going to game or associate with that person…as a matter of fact i do not game with tweens…lack of subtlety comes to mind but hey they have fun…and using their imaginations and not watching tv,,,

  24. Mike says:

When I explained D&D to my sixth graders (I”m a teacher) they thought it sounded awesome and want to play… (32 and still playing)

  25. Peter says:

Those who are anti Dungeons And Dragons have no imagination.

  26. Starguy32 says:

Okay, you crossed a line buddy. Dungeons an Dragons is the greatest game ever invented, (except D&D 4e), and if I had the chance, I would continue playing for my entire life.

  27. sam says:

    ummmmmm…………whats dungons and dragons?

  28. JackLORDofTOASTppl says:

HAHA!! I find that funny because one of my dad’s friends plays Runescape and he’s almost 50… while i never go on my runescape account because that game is boring as shit!
