I don’t think it’s Xenophobia. The loudest “language” is Brooklyn English. Additionally, have you lived in China before? Most people don’t learn about inside voices. This country is LOUD. Like, women carrying their sleeping babies just laugh and joke as loud as they can. None of that “Shhh, quiet! The baby’s sleeping,” nonsense. I’m not saying it’s wrong of them, but it’s a generalized observation, which I’m sure is where the graph designer was coming from.

It’s pretty well-educated for xenophobia. Typical xenophobes don’t have the foggiest what “Cantonese” is. It’s all chingchong slant talk to them. And there’d be one entry for both Hindi and Arabic as every middle-eastern and central asian person is a sheet wearing “golly gosh yes”-type to a xenophobe.

I read this more as a small dig at clashing cultural norms. Especially as all the non-English speakers in this are merely at a little above outdoor level, and non-Brooklyn English-speakers are made fun of too, being “inaudible”. No one gets a free pass in this graph, and not having a favored group to identify with makes it hard to believe this is xenophobia.

science fail: there is no atmosphere on the moon (and for 99% of the distance between the earth and the moon), so no medium to carry sound. no one could hear you on the moon, because nothing can be heard at all there.

this should not be a curved line, but bars. The graph as it is indicates that if I start speaking English and gradually move to Spanish, my speaking volume will go up. But that if I want to move from Spanish to Cantonese, I’ll have to speak Arabic and Hindi first. This is not the case.
