  1. Deep Thought says:

I told you you weren’t going to like it.

  2. pwner of n00bs says:

    LAME!

    • segaphile says:

      Dude, go read the book.

      BEST GRAPH EVER.

    • cb says:

very lame – the graph really doesnt make any sense. yes i’ve read the series, but the graph sucks.

      • zz says:

Clearly very few people on GraphJam actually understand how to make correct graphs.

      • 42 says:

If you’ve read the series than you would know that this phrase ( the answer to life, the universe, and everything ) is all throughout the book. That’s why this IS the best graph ever. Do you even know how to read a venn diagram? It’s either that or you read the whole series and took it seriously.

        • Usoki says:

But this graph implies that Life has a separate answer, the Universe has a separate answer, Everything as a separate answer, Life and the Universe have an answer, the Universe and Everything as an answer, and Everything and Life have an answer.

They may be three things in a list, but that doesn’t mean you can Venn Diagram them. A Venn Diagram implies a lot of differences with a few things in common for the center area. That’s not so in this case. It’s a horrific fail.

          • Awesome says:

Your response implies that you are lame.

          • Matt says:

Well thats exactly true, Everything, without Life or the Universe would be a completely different thing, as with the Universe without Everything or Life, or Life without the Universe or Everything and so on. Only with all things, which is what our existance is, is the answer 42

  3. Johny one note says:

    Great stuff

  4. Not_you says:

lest there be any doubt: although not original, this graph is full of WIN. for those who don’t get it: go read the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (a series of books everyone should read, FYI).

  5. Usha77 says:

    Rockin’!

  6. KC says:

Okay… This “42″ joke is really getting old. It was only funny the first few hundred times…

    • Stereotypo says:

      agreed

    • Stereotypo says:

A H2G2 reference just isn’t enough. You’ve gotta take it somewhere new. This is just pandering to Douglas Adams fan (among whom I count myself.)

      This just isn’t enough.

    • NH says:

Sure – it’s getting old, but does anybody have a better answer?

    • dude says:

meh, i thought it was only funny the first 42 times. doh

    • i.half4 says:

More importantly, it is still new to anyone who hasn’t read the books yet. The power of anticlimax is what makes “42″ so funny in the first place. So it really is a great disservice to place the answer and the question in a coexisting relationship and leave them sitting about where just anyone could read them.

  7. This guy over here says:

I get the reference but I don’t think it’s funny. It doesn’t work as a Venn diagram.

    • Milly says:

Agreed. Not sure what part of “life” exists outside of the “universe”, and definitely know that both “life” and the “universe” should be contained within “everything”.

My Venn diagram would have the above diagram within “Fail”

      • Kit says:

Actually, it’s saying the answer to life, the universe, and everything. So it does work the way it is. No need to put them all inside each other.

      • segaphile says:

Really guys? REALLY? You’re going to dissect the inner workings and errors in a graph that is meant to convey a joke? It’s a humorous graph. Anal-retentive much? Go take a laxative or something.

        • PeppaMama says:

U said it, segaphile, if you want serious graphs, boys and girls, go work with engineers like I do…you’ll be begging for HG2G graphs…and people with a sense of humor.

In space, the numbers are awful.

    • Milly says:

Agreed. Not sure what part of “life” exists outside of the “universe”, and definitely know that both “life” and the “universe” should be contained within “everything”.

My Venn diagram would have the above diagram within “Fail”

  8. fizzle says:

    Douglas Adams WIN!!!

  9. DjaPavlak says:

ugh im tired of this 42 IS NOT the answer to life, the universe, and everthing. its the answer to the Ultimate Question which they THOUGHT was life, the universe, and everything

    • psychodarko says:

indeed the answer is 42 deep thought was created to find the question to the ultimate answer but its program never finished those damn hairdressers!!
although it may be What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?

  10. Ricardodude says:

    Yay, Diagram Fail.

  11. neeeh says:

this was probably one of the worst movies ever made. Although it was one of the most random and funny quotes.

  12. Arthur Dent says:

    what’s the question?

  13. observer says:

Massive Venn diagram FAIL. Go back to 9th grade math.

  14. Silver Braids says:

Look, if you look at this Venn diagram while using a computer powered by a bistromathematics drive then it makes perfect sense, as you have to divide each of the circles by the amount of people in your party and add 3 pounds sterling for an ample gratuity in which case the total bill comes out to the exact number of 6 pounds by 9 pounds which in this and all other cases equal 42 pounds. Any questions?

  15. tinripp says:

    DONT PANIC !

  16. heruyan says:

    cheers on the hitchhikers reference.

  17. Viking says:

So, if in all good logic this equation is correct, and if what is explained in the Bible is correct (for sake of argument at the very least), then is Jesus the Christ 42?

But wasn’t He 33 when they put Him on the cross? I’m so lost….

  18. Ma.Belle.Fleur says:

    Dig the reference!

  19. Joe says:

What was the question? I just read the whole trilogy (in 5 parts) and missed the question.

    • psychodarko says:

god bless the trilogy in 5 parts and there was no question that is what deep thought i.e earth was designed to find out but earth was destroyed before it had time to finish the question… either that or its because of the hairdressers!

  20. Dylan H says:

Hitchhiker’s Guide ties with the Monty Python for being over-quoted. But I guess this graph had to be made sooner or later.

  21. Mikey D says:

I would be happier if there had been humourous examples labelled for the intersections of life/everything, everything/universe and universe/life. Obviously, being a critic, I lack the intelligence to provide the humourous quotes myself.

  22. Shisno says:

    42nd!

  23. Amanda says:

I thought for sure the 42 TPS reports was fake. Alas, I am 43rd.

  24. Green Is Good says:

I lift my Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster to your graph.

  25. Jielun says:

Actually, deep thought was wrong from the start since the answer to everything is four (4).

Since the answer given in this graph is 42, lets take that number as an example… 42 = 4+2 = 6, six is written with three letters, three with five and five with four letters.. (yes you could also do forty two = 8 letters, 8 is 5 letters and 5 is 4 again).

Since 4 is also written with 4 letters, you cannot go on anymore after this, therefor: Everything is 4.

  26. Evertide says:

    Old meme is OLD.

  27. cyj70 says:

lol, just watched that movie thursday.

  28. adminoflife says:

honestly, given the culture of LOLs im surprised this didnt show up before

  29. yeah says:

yes! the nerds unite with this one.

  30. MedKid says:

I SAW THIS AND DIED!!! Hate them damned Vogons. Is it surprising that a 13 year old read all the books at age 11 and got it as much as your average Earthling got it? I scream 42 randomly and see who gets it. Time to go watch Star Trek!!! :D

  31. Devlin says:

So, life, the universe and everything is the same as 42? I thought it was the answer to them all.

  32. Allison says:

    H2G2 WIN.

Does this mean, though, that the answer to life is different from the answer to the universe, which is also in turn different from the answer to everything, but all needs can be satisfied by the solution “42″?

Meh. I’m still waiting for the Ultimate Question. Which, if my needs are fulfilled, will NOT be answered by Colfer.

  33. Miki says:

    I KNEW IT!
