  1. NHK says:

Sorry, but this is just lame. Fail.

    • Owen says:

Not as lame as Sarah Palin’s candidacy!

    • The L says:

      Agreed.

It might be better if it said, “Places Sarah Palin can see from Alaska,” but not by all that much.

      • Eeyore says:

You don’t need to mention Sarah Palin since most people will know it’s a Sarah Palin reference. The current title doesn’t take away any humour unless you absolutely need the obvious pointed out, although you seem to already clearly understand the obvious inwhich for you the title “Places Sarah Palin can see from Alaska” should seem redundant to you. (It would for me anyway.)

Ofcourse humour is cultural, so, maybe this kind of humour is just not in your culture.

  2. podgirl says:

you can probably also see canada from some parts of Alaska

    • Steve says:

I would think, at the very least, you can see Alaska from Alaska too. This is a clear fail.

      • Shisno says:

Keeping up with not-so-current current events fail.

It’s a joke about Sarah Palin saying she can see Russia from her house.

        • leah says:

But it’s true; you can see Alaska from Alaska so Alaska should be highlighted as well. Also, Canada. This map is a fail & so is your blindness.

          • First! says:

You are full of POP CULTURE fail. so, FAIL.

          • ill dottore says:

saying you can see alaska from alaska is absurdly & preposterously stupid. of course you can, because it displays that YOU ARE IN ALASKA at that moment, so what else should there be to see? botswana? it’s like saying ‘i can see my hand when i hold in front of my eyes’…

            • Adam says:

Soooo… To further that thought, if you were IN your hand you would then fail to be able to see it anymore?

              • ill dottore says:

WHAT??!!??!? seriously dude, that is ridiculous!! may i have the number of your dealer please, he must offer some good stuff. i know my hand-example wasn’t the best one, but i guess u missed the point a bit… i mean dude… seriously…

        • Koki Kariya says:

It really should be “Places Sarah Palin can see from Alaska” otherwise Alaska and Canada should be included.

          • Karen says:

The interesting part is that it’s still pretty hard to see MOSCOW from Alaska, which is really the more important part of Russia than the Bearing Strait!

            • The L says:

That’s why it’s hilarious that Palin makes such a big deal out of the fact that she can see the frozen, sparsely-inhabited wastes of Siberia from her Alaska home. Who cares if you can see some islands that happen to be in Russia? That doesn’t mean you know anything about Russian politics. My dog can see the TV, but that doesn’t mean he understands the news on CNN. A baby can see the backyard, but that doesn’t mean she understands lawn care.

        • Steve says:

          facetious detection fail

        • podgirl says:

I’m not an idiot. I got the joke. It just wasn’t funny.
And it should have been titled, “Places Sarah Palin can see from her house.” Then I wouldn’t have said anything.

        • LS says:

Except Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her house. Tina Fey did. Palin just commented on being able to see Russia from parts of Alaska. Though that still doesn’t give her Foreign policy experience.

      • Badonk says:

No you can’t. I was in Alaska once. The moment you cross the border everything goes black. It was one of Einstein’s lesser known theories: “Time slows down as you approach the speed of light. And light totally bends around Alaska.”

  3. Kaptyn says:

You seem to have forgotten Canada and Washington State. Get some glasses so you can read the map better.

  4. Megabyte says:

    ^^Understanding the joke FAIL.

  5. Delibarit says:

Whole joke fail. How can you see russia from alaska? They’re on opposite sides of the world! (see map)

  6. Queejibo says:

Thanks to the curvature of the Earth, the only place in Alaska that you can actually see Russia from is an island in the Bearing Sea.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:The_Diomede_Islands_in_the_BeringSea_(picture_from_space).jpg

With Sarah Palin’s continuous diplomatic involvement with world leaders and reading every newspaper that exists, I doubt she’s ever had time to visit the Diomedes.

    • Skif says:

But she can see it. Isn’t that enough?

      • Alcari says:

Agreed. That’s plenty of experience to found a foreign policy on ;)

        • Viking says:

So… you criticize someone’s lack of foreign policy because your own is so immaculate that you are able to scoff? Pfft. You’re probably like every other retarded Demo-publican in America, and therefore not even worth my time…

    • jules says:

Apparently her husband has though. The wikipedia page for the islands links to his travel page. I still think the woman is a walking punchline.

  7. ryszard says:

    Geography and humor FAIL

  8. Drew says:

Wow, this hasn’t been done before at all…

Can people at least be clever?

  9. 216 says:

    Yes indeed! EPIC FAIL!
    Try something new.

  10. Amanda says:

Well this isn’t even remotely funny….

  11. Ryan says:

I’m usually not one to pick apart so-so graphs, but this one is just disappointing. It could have been a Venn diagram with “Places you can see from Alaska” as a subset of “Places Palin can see from Alaska” at the least.

    • KiLlAlLcOpS says:

considering the Aleutian islands span so far there is much more you can see from alaska, that is if there was unlimit4ed visibility and you had a very powerful telescope

  12. Nate says:

    Ha ha! I like it.

  13. TreeCuddler says:

Epic Fail on multiple levels : Geography, politics, current events

Good news is, there’s a place at failblog for this :)

  14. Liz says:

…Wow, I can’t believe the comments on this. This is hilarious if you’re following politics. I admit, it could have more clarification, but seriously. SERIOUSLY.

    • Janice says:

I thought you had to be living under a rock to not have heard Palin’s comments about Alaska and Russia.

Apparently rocks are very popular as homes…

      • Janice says:

Well, admittedly, some readers aren’t in America. Although worldwide, she’s been getting a lot of chuckles for that one. ;-P

  15. BC girl- Jen says:

Pretty sure the is the worst respoce to any graph on GraphJam!

    GRAPH FAIL WIN!

  16. teachj says:

    Uh, Canada? Duh!

  17. snico says:

who care’s if it fails, its stupid anyway, if it was correct i still would not understand why it is funny. who cares what Alaska can see.

btw, i’ll be nerdy and ask if anyone can actually see Russia from Alaska?

    • Ope N. Wyde says:

Already answered. Apparently, on the Diomede Islands you can see the big sturgeon (Russia, for you stupids).

  18. Ope N. Wyde says:

Anyways, Palin’s seeing Russia from her house is that she sits on the balcony in a gillie suit with a sniper rifle the size of my… ego… and from the super-scope* she can see Russia. She can’t see Canada because she, like everyone else in existence, could care less.
    -
*Don’t give me that “But, Ope! Snipers can only see two miles! You are fail!” And so on. I don’t care. No one does. It’s not funny. Go home, sit down, and shut up. Save your bullcrap for why you take so long in the shower.

  19. Aporia says:

Would have been marginally funny if the OP had managed to colour in ALL of Russia…

    • The L says:

It’s a lot more time-consuming to do so if one only has MSPaint to work with. Unlike Photoshop and its imitators, MSPaint’s fill tool does not allow you to color in “everything that’s this exact color AND shades very close to it.” It only fills a patch that is coded as exactly the same color. While the differences between the shades of gray on a map are difficult for the human eye to detect, they are totally different colors to a computer.

I’ve used both, and for cases like this, Photoshop is definitely better. I did the “Global Relevance” chart in MSPaint, and it took me at least 3 hours just to shade everything without leaving gray outlines everywhere. And it takes a lot more precision and skill than just having Photoshop fill in all the gray at once for you.

  20. skinflaps says:

Wot about mars? Everyone forgets mars. Where would you put that on a map like this?

  21. Chucky says:

In Soviet Russia, Alaska sees you!

  22. PloCoon says:

Geography fail. At least include Alaska, Canada, and Washington.

I find it funny that Alaska’s legitimacy as a state is being questioned nowadays since Palin’s candidacy.

And look on the bright side… at least she’s not infanticidal. *glares at Obama*

  23. Vladimir Putin says:

Why does everyone fail to notice that this is a two way street? I can see Alaska from my Russian dacha…

  24. kopaka says:

am i the only one who noticed that Alaska is not colored?

  25. Natedog4838 says:

u cant see Alaska from alaska?

  26. your mom says:

I saw russia from alaska too, on google earth.

  27. phate says:

    dumbass what about canada?

  28. Juan Curro says:

Stop complaining you assholes, if you don’t get the joke it’s your fault
