  1. rissa says:

    Your correctness must be suppressed….

    • Mark says:

Wow, this is so true. How did it end up on the Cheezburger network? It doesn’t make fun of Sarah Palin at all! The site must have been hacked.

      • Casey says:

The main reason we make fun of Palin–besides the lack of common sense–is that she’s just so gosh-darn cute. :)

  2. Stereotypo says:

LOL I’ve been supporting the oscillation theory of voting for years. It’s so true.

  3. chanchanblog says:

    *Thumbs up*

  4. HeyFace says:

So this shows that the president always botches the show…

    • Koki Kariya says:

No, it shows that when the President and Congress are of the same party they have far to much freedom to press their bullshit agendas. Only through the working together of two equally fucked up parties can we reach something that the average human being doesn’t hate.

  5. Z says:

Best part is… other than signing a piece of paper, or being able to control the army… the president doesnt have too much power… its really up to congress to do shit, when they have a different letter in their title than the president (R, D, or I) is when they decide to be mr pissy pants, not do work and blame the current administration for not completing a bill that never really got to him…

  6. Ruby says:

Thanks, in all seriousness. I was trying to explain this to someone over lunch today. They may understand it better as a visual.

(GraphJam has real world applications! Huzzah!)

  7. Jefoid says:

Hooray for divided government! Gridlock is the taxpayer’s best friend.

  8. Stellar says:

So true! Except you missed the “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t” effect that keeps these guys in office for two terms instead of just one.

  9. Alcari says:

You forgot to add in the ever decreasing line of liberty

  10. ethana2 says:

This cycle sucks, I’m voting Ron Paul.

  11. joeyjojoshabadoo says:

    AWESOME!!!!!
    I love this graph.

  12. Shin0bi272 says:

Fail… Democrats ran both houses of congress for 40 years.

    • Fake E. Tufte says:

Oh, you mean during the Great Post WWII Economic Expansion, which halted oh, about the same time Republicans finally took over Congress in 2000? :) Just kidding.

Actually I really like the graph, that’s pretty much how it works…

      • Robert says:

Actually, during the debacle that was the 60’s, the Great Society, which destroyed the black family and created a whole new generation of parasites on the system, the Carter years and stagflation and the Misery Index, the first law that allowed for buying of houses for people who couldn’t afford it, etc. The reason there was a recession in 2000 was the dot-com bubble burst.

But yeah, none of these goobers should be in power for long. I think all incumbents should be voted out and all laws should be erased and we should just start from scratch.

      • shin0bi272 says:

republicans took over congress in the 1994 election there brainiac. And the stock market hit the lowest point it had hit since the great depression during carter’s 4 years in office … along with him not being able to rescue the iranian hostages, gas lines, and stagflation. Since that time the dow went up to 14,000 under a republican president and a republican congress. The democrats took over in 2007 and in 2008 the stock market crashes. If you think that this is how it works then you are obviously retarded because the democrats have had the control for decades straight and this graph insinuates that every 2 or 4 years theres a major shift. Which is wrong.

    • David Joyner says:

With primarily Republican Presidents. That’s basically the point of the graph – the country is going in a good direction when neither party is in full control. That was a rather slow part of the cycle, but part nonetheless :-)

      • shin0bi272 says:

no its not. the graph says one party is in power and we dont like what they are doing so we vote the other party into power. First congress then the president and then it all falls apart. Which is wrong. the democrats have controlled congress for 40 years while the president has been going back and forth.

  13. Matador says:

Probably more accurate by changing the places of Congress and President. But good work!!

    • David Joyner says:

Not exactly – a Republican -> Democrat congressional (just House, actually – Senate never changed) shift in 1988 preceded a Republican -> Democrat Presidential shift in 1992. Then, a Democrat -> Republican congressional shift in 1996 preceded a Democrat -> Republican Presidential shift in 2000. Recently, a Republican -> Democratic congressional shift will likely precede a Republican -> Democratic Presidential shift in a few months.

Those years might be wrong, I’m going by memory as to when each session entered – but the preceding should be accurate, if not a little more or less advanced.

      • Robert says:

Oi…god forbid-this has been the most useless congress ever, and Obama’s a radical Marxist who believes in total redistribution of wealth.

        • RJ says:

Way to go out of the realm of reality, Robert. A Marxist? Really? And what writings did you read to get you to that conclusion? The one where he wants kids to be insured? Well, McCain does, too! McCain is a Marxist, too! I hate morons. Yup, I said ‘hate’.

      • Lyn says:

This election doesn’t go with the whole “This is working! Let’s elect a Democratic President too!” thing, though. It’s more like “It isn’t working yet! Let’s elect as many Democrats as possible in both the Executive and Legislative branches!” (and for the record, I support that, as I think we’re at a point where we need to actually be able to get things done, and not have people blocking things for the sake of siding with their party.)

    • Lily says:

      it is so true!

  14. mamarosa says:

    SIne wave graph WIN!

  15. JenniLamb says:

It would be more accurate if the “good” and “bad” levels weren’t perfectly equal.

  16. Jez says:

Vote 3rd party and fix this cycle. Find a candidate who actually supports your views! There are viable 3rd parties out there so become a TRUELY educated voter and look at ALL the options not just the ones that Fox or CNN choose to talk to.
