    Premier !
What’s going on with the y axis starting at 74 ? Axis fail ?

    • roflcopter says:

      yesm

      • brewski says:

73 percent of charts have an axis that is not correct. 22 percent probably should be a pie chart instead.

        • flyguy says:

No, pie charts are never appropriate, they basically transform the coordinate system into polar coordinates, while humans are far superior at detecting things on a linear scale.

Dotplots are usually better than barcharts though. Please see books by Tukey, Cleveland, etc.

    • Destin says:

Definitely axis fail. As Jimi Hendrix would say… Axis: Bold as Fail.

    • Dolt says:

axis are allowed to start at any number that is sensible however with 8 being less than 74 this doesn’t make any sense

      • maxsmrt says:

It is true that you can start an axis at any number but you must remember that all points on the graph MUST be equivalent distances … 2-4-8-10 good… 3-6-8-12 bad.

if you are starting a graph at a much larger space than your increments will be… please put two slashes in the line… then axis = WIN

        • maxsmrt says:

          however… should be pie chart

          • chowmix says:

or a stacked bar if tracking a trend. would be interesting to collect data.

But, I can fix that by providing a statistic that adheres to this chart: over the last 16 years the number of statistics pulled out of one’s butt has increased 74% annually

            • flyguy says:

Why a stacked bar chart? Those are almost never the most appropriate way to view trend data. Usually you would want to use dotplots connected by lines that vary by color per stratum. Please see Cleveland and other data visualization books.

        • ME says:

2-4-8-10 is not good, 4 to 8 is different then the other ones!

    • ME says:

you can start an axis at whatever number you want and it’s still right, and this ones more correct then most ’cause it has equal amounts of numbers inbetween each place on the scale = COMMENT FAIL!

  2. jessticles says:

based on actual data is both 8% and 80%? graph FAIL

  3. D-Mac says:

Should be p<0.00005, in addition to the previous criticisms.

  4. hamjudo says:

Enough wrong to be annoying, but not enough wrong to be funny.
93% of statisticians think the graph sucks.
65% of humor fans think the graph sucks.
99.7% of cheezburgr fans say “no lolz”.

  5. Crazy Emm says:

    tc;dr

  6. ethana2 says:

67% of the public uses Apple PC’s.

…no, I didn’t make that up; I learned it from watching TV.

  7. sk8 says:

    It’s the Statistician’s Blues.
“65% of all statistics are made up right there on the spot.
82.4% of people believe them whether they’re accurate statistics or not.

    • Dolt says:

well i thoguht it was 87% which were made up but i think it’s higher than that because when they conduct these “surveys” they have never asked me .. have they ever asked you?

    • toddfan says:

“They say 3 percent of the people use 5 to 6 percent of their brain
97 percent use 3 percent and the rest goes down the drain
I’ll never know which one I am but I’ll bet you my last dime
99 percent think we’re 3 percent 100 percent of the time”

  8. Matt says:

This should be a pie chart anyway.

  9. Pringle says:

    Copied my graph. ._.
Never got accepted though, so I’ll probably be the only one to notice.

  10. andrew says:

apperently many people fail to realize that this is one of the 92% of made up statistics.

  13. flyguy says:

Quoting a p-value as “greater than” some constant K, as you have done here, is basically meaningless.
