hahaha! SO TRUE
LyX as best replacement for writing.
openoffice, yo
the graph with open office would need another version where 15% of time is spent restarting the program caus it crashes and 20% of time trying to format correctly
You have some crappy computer if OpenOffice causes it to crash… Firefox takes longer to load than OpenOffice…
Not a fan. I gave it a shot and used it for quite awhile…but it just never quite felt right. There’s something kind of rough around the edges about it.
Openoffice is free. MS Office is quite expensive.
In money and disk space and time and energy. If it wasn’t used by 95% of the computers in the world, no one would use it at all!
*gives brewski the golf clap*
It’s only expensive if you’re dumb enough to buy it.
Don’t forget “Trying to kill Clippy”!
Oh yes, “trying to kill clippy” would have taken up the bulk of the chart. Especially since he’d try so hard to help you. “I see you have a shot gun! What would you like to do with this shotgun? Is this a business related assassination?”
i lol’d
You guys realize you can change Clippy to something else? There’s a dog,
a cat, a red circle, a crappy windows logo, the Earth, Einstein, and on some
computers, there is a wizard.
You can also download more that people have made (I’m going to get one
of a Metroid)
There’s also a robot on mine o.O
Hilarious
This would have been funnier if the author hadn’t misspelled “formatting.” Which, of course, autocorrect would have caught.
O the irony.
Speeling police FTW!
maybe he meant “for mating” and forgot to put the space in there…
either way, a spelling error
I’ve never heard of someone using MS Office to get laid, but hey, I don’t know everything.
Ah, that’s what that sexy devil “Clippy” is for!
“I see you’re trying to get laid. Can I help?”
Sex with Clippy. *masterbates*
Good but I would have added some time to copy and paste it into a new document so that they edit history wouldn’t be visible to anyone who wanted to see the rough drafts.
Try the remove hidden data tool. You’ll have to google for the URL, but it strips out edit and owner info.
hahahahaha!
Hurm.
I keep hearing all these horror stories about MS Word and Windows and everything, but I never had any problems myself.
I do use OpenOffice nowadays, though. Mostly because of the “free” thing.
It’s mostly because Microsoft Office autoformats everything for you whether you want it or not. That’s why I hate it so much. (I use WordPad.)
Except Wordpad doesn’t have a double-space function, so you have to do
it yourself, and that wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that IT
DOESN’T TELL YOU WHERE THE LINE ENDS, so you have to repeatedly
check the Print Preview to see when you go over.
THIS MAN SPEAKS THE TRUTH!
This is the f***ing truest and therefor funniest graph I haver ever seen on this side
I’ve never been on the other side. Is it the dark side? Do they give you cookies?
Anakin, join the Dark Side! I can save Padme, I promise not to call you Ani,
and I’ll give you cookies!
FTW!
I live for these graphs.
How long till the next one?
*pout*
OMG! The story of my life!
Word.
I see what you did there. +1
Y’all know you can turn the autoformatting fuction OFF, right?
Yes, individually and each format option seems to be in a different menu.
If it were that simple — no one would be empathizing with this graph. The fact is you ‘can’t’ turn off all aspects of autoformatting in Word.. That’s the reason it’s such a PAIN.. Once a “heading” is established it can’t be easily deleted.. You’re just stuck..
Actually, it IS that simple and you CAN turn everything off.
It’s just that no one bothers to learn how, just like they couldn’t be bothered to learn how to do things like bullet lists, headings, etc.–which is why Microsoft decided it would be “helpful” for the program to do those things automatically. Ironic, huh?
Precisely the reason why I just started to do all my reports in high school in HTML/CSS. Tell the printer not to print page information, and you’ve actually got a decent report if you have any knowledge of either. (Though if you can use CSS, you probably know HTML, too. Otherwise, you’ve gotte yourself more backwards than you think.)
After I got used to it, I was actually able to churn out papers faster.
The only problem is Notepad doesn’t have spell-check, so I have to rough draft in MS-Worthless anyway or take care of errors myself.
This is so right on! This is why I went back to Word Perfect.
Don’t forget Trying To Figure Out 2007.
separate graph, honey. separate graph with lots of swears.
SO true.
Still figuring out–still swearing.
Oh jeez. I still haven’t found where they put some of the functions. Whose idea WAS that?
I don’t think it would be quite that much. In fact, you could shrink that to around 10% of the time and add 50% for “Choosing a font you like”, and a bit for “Fixing the AutoCorrect changes that you know are wrong”. You have no idea how hard it is to write about how fish use their barbels when it keeps changing it to “barbells” (They are two different words; barbels are like whiskers, barbells are for weightlifting.)
Also, why Notepad pwns with its minimal functionality.
Add “barbels” to your dictionary and you’re set.
By far the most accurate graph on the entire website
No…stop it…why did the entire paragraph indent?! NO! GO BACK HOME! I DON’T WANT A BULLET THERE STOP IT RAGGLEHABGS *crash as computer flies out window*
Time spent actually learning to use Word… 0%
Just turn off autoformatting if you don’t like it.
On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
Select or clear the options you want.
You can also turn off Clippy. Could you take 10 seconds to click on the “Help” menu and find out how to do this? Why don’t you just use a fucking typewriter?
Bingo. Takes under a minute to turn autoformatting off.
Or just use Notepad if it bothers you that much
I am sssoooooooooooooooooooooin agreement…
It needs another big slice for closing the clipboard
Why don’t you noobs just do the easy way like I do. Just stare at the screen until it shows you the document you wanted to write with the formatting you wanted in final draft, with impeccable spelling and grammar, flawlessly fact-checked and cross referenced. EZFTW
Whether you use MS-Word or Open Office, there is always the issue of pre-formatting, to some extent. This is just the way it is with Word Processing software, unless of course you want to write your own Word Processing software, or use a program like Notepad, etc. Be glad there are all the options available in both Word and Open Office that allow you to produce some really great documents. You might not agree with me now, but I am sure that at some future point you will – when you see how both Word and Open Office are amazing platforms to create documents with all kinds of cool components – pre-formatting is especially good to help those that have no clue to word processing. For those of us who understand it, just change the settings, right?
must add for time spent restraining yourself from chucking your mouse across the room
…also time spent thinking about how you were on your Mac at home using Pages to create an even better document in a third of the time
