Being japanese is BOTH nationality, citizenship and ethnicity. Japanese DON’T differentiate between japanese nationality and ethnicity, nor they have separate words for that! I always thought the Vapours song is using “turning Japanese” as a euphemism for a particular solo activity, and not about being Japanese at all.
Which makes the song even dumber than it already is (and yes, I’ll still old enough to have heard it on the radio. And it didn’t make any sense back then either. And that euphemism didn’t gain any foothold UNTIL this song came out).
