i thought the village was outside the jungle…
you know, the lion sleeps in the jungle near the village. i mean, if it’s a jungle, it couldn’t be a village. unless we’re talking about ewoks, but i don’t think that’s the case.

I always figured, the village was sort of carved out of the jungle. So, while the village is not like the jungle, it is part of the jungle.
Mind you, although “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was first recorded in 1939 by Soloman Linda, under the title “Mbube” (Lion), its original Zulu lyrics didn’t translate into anything about jungles or villages, just a lion, and not even a particularly sleepy one. The “mighty jungle” and “peaceful/quiet village” lyrics weren’t added until the Tokens wrote new English lyrics in 1961.
