  1. Tony says:

This chart fails, they run on 2 road courses throughout the season. Road courses have left and right turns.

    • sokay says:

whatever! all of the nascar races that I (and probably the public majority) have ever seen the cars drove on the left side in a pointless circle. driving on the right side during different seasons does not an exciting sport make…which is the point of this graph.

      • Ozz says:

RACES during a single season, you dolt! 36 races make up a single season. Therefore, for this chart to be accurate there should at least be a small amount of red on the right turn bar.

      • Andy says:

Whatever! They turn RIGHT and left. Road courses like Tony said. OP fail!

      • Tony says:

The chart is supposed to represent what turns they make, not what side they are on. And since they turn both right and left, the graph doesn’t make any sense. I understand the joke, but to make fun of something, you have to at least have a basic knowledge of the subject, such as knowing that they turn both left and right.

        • 3ntropy says:

no no no. this graph is hilarious because it represents what everyone ACTUALLY thinks of NASCAR. well done. we don’t want to know anything about it…

        • km says:

stop trying to defend useless “sport”.

PLus since when did making a LEFT TURN for 500 laps all whilst sitting in a really hot car becoem a sport? Theres nothing in racing that has to do with athletic ability, same with golf, same with skateboarding.

and yes big deal once in a while they do raod races or watever theyre called. Whoop d doo. At this point in time were talking about the big TRACK that they race on where all they do is take left turns.

O by the way, learn to take a joke without being so defensive.

          • Tony says:

LOL! Auto racing became a sport in 1895. Thanks for playing!

          • LOKi says:

“Theres nothing in racing that has to do with athletic ability, same with golf, same with skateboarding”??

How the hell are these things related? If baseball is a sport then skateboarding and golf certainly are too. Define “sport”. If these things do not require athletic ability then why can’t EVERYONE play golf or ride a skateboard. Shit man…walking is a “sport”.

          • terry says:

I have to ask this of you… why aren’t you a multimillionaire driver, golfer , or skateboarder if these things require zero athletic ability. Youmustalostchormind. or are you a sour grapes quadraplegic ? If so, I appologize.

        • toto says:

i think you might miss that it argues the types of turns MADE during the race, not the possible turn types. so for someone like me, I think this is a fantastic chart. I lol’d. Objective complete.

      • sokay says:

okay, okay so they do other things than go left. it still made me laff because it’s MOSTLY true. sheesh! chill! who knew there were so many NASCAR fans looking at kittens? (i know this is the graph tab but we all get here via the kittens)

        • jwdoke says:

no, some of us got here via the StumbleUpon button…

        • Tony says:

Yeah, it made me laugh too. And then I made myself laugh when I corrected it. Then you guys made me laugh with your argumentative statements. And don’t forget to scroll to the bottom to where the creator of the graph says he is a NASCAR fan.

      • Scot Z says:

Well, they DO have to make a right turn to leave their pit stall!

    • You all are 100% FAIL. The OP is WIN.

If you only turn your TV on once a year and only see the Daytona 500 — the Super Bowl of NASCAR — then, yes, there are 800 left turns (not counting pit stops). (I think I counted correctly?)

If you turn your TV on every week and count all the turns in a 36-race NASCAR season, then there will be *some* right turns for Infineon/Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

If you are the former, you are a loser!

If you are the latter, you are awesome! Go Dale Jr! Go Tony Stewart! Kyle Busch sucks!

      • Simon says:

I misread that for a moment and thought that you’d finished talking about motor racing and were making a political point: Busch sucks!

If you want to see proper motor racing you need to see Formula One.

      • Ovamiat says:

Remember: Kyle Busch sucks! KURT Busch doesn’t!

  2. ReTARDIS says:

    Serious graph fail.

  3. Tero says:

What about road courses? NASCAR races are run at Watkins Glen and Sonoma, where they turn both left AND right.

    • Scot Z says:

It’s not enough. I know NASCAR’s roots are in oval tracks, but I think they need more than two road courses. Personally, I’d like to see them run at Road America; it would be REALLY fun watching these guys try to outbrake each other into Turn 5!

      • Ovamiat says:

Yes, yes, YES!!! Road America would be PERFECT for NASCAR, especially since it’s FOUR MILES LONG!

  4. Chelsea says:

This graph is leaving out a vital element…

…Really, I think this should be held against the figure of left turns that Derek Zoolander is capable of executing.

    • wonder mutt says:

First, let me say that I love you for making this connection.
Second, please allow me to point out Derek could not, “hang a Louie” which means that he could only turn right.
Third, allow me to remind you that at the end, he did indeed turn left, so there should still be a bit of red in the other column.

  5. Ryoga says:

Not true! There are four tracks that have both right and left turns.
And people say NASCAR fans are ignorant.

  6. NASCARfreak says:

Unless you’re Michael waltrip, then you make lots of right hand turns.. on left turn tracks

  7. Blarg says:

Road course. Chart fails. ‘Nuff said.

  8. Boter says:

Now, if there was a Jeff Dunham video along with it…

“They’re makin’ a left turn! They’re makin’ a left turn! They’re makin’ another left turn! I WONDER WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT!”

    • Ryoga says:

Now THAT would make this graph a success.

    • podgirl says:

YES! Jeff Dunham…I couldn’t remember which comedian had done this joke.

I bet he didn’t get all the crap the NASCAR fans are giving this poor graph.

  9. Red says:

I think the point of the graph is that Nascar is a very boring sport.

  10. purdlemeow says:

Going the Distance? (by the band Cake) I think the chart is really illustrating that song… not just NASCAR. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  11. Sophist FCD says:

A chart on GraphJam that is less than 100% accurate!? Someone get me to a fainting couch!

  12. Robert says:

NASCAR is a great sport, if you like auto racing. Now basketball. Thats a boring sport. Whee, I put it in the hole again.

  13. D-mac says:

Made of win. What a waste of gas.

    • Tony says:

Except that nearly every single one of the safety features that are on the car that you drive every day came from auto racing.

      • Boter says:

Yeah, thanks for all the weight for crap that a decent driver doesn’t actually need in day to day driving. High speed races, sure. Not so much going to the supermarket.

        • Not Me says:

Um…you haven’t driven in Charlotte, NC lately, then.

        • Scot Z says:

Preach it, brother! It really bothers me that so-called “compact” cars now weigh almost 3000 pounds and 30mpg highway has become something to brag about. Way back when, I had a 1600lb Chevy Sprint that could easily beat 30mpg IN THE CITY even with my heavy foot.

Protection in a crash is nice, but I’d rather be able to avoid a crash in the first place.

        • Tony says:

Then tell me why more people get killed on their way to the supermarket than they do on the track?

          • ELA says:

Correlation does not imply causation, and you’re comparing two
different-sized populations with different sample sizes.

            • Tony says:

Yes, but he is suggesting that the car you drive doesn’t need any safety features. The fact that 40,000 people die a year in normal cars would suggest otherwise.

          • LOKi says:

more people driving to the supermarket. Same reason most people get in crashes within 5 miles of their home. Because EVERY time you leave the house you drive through this “5 mile” area. Moving 5 miles away will not help. Millions more people drive the the supermarket than will ever drive on a race track.

    • Blarg says:

Yeah, because we ALL know they use the same exact gas that we use in high performance auto racing.

      Moron.

  14. Kim says:

My son wants to point out that in Piston Cup races, you can sometimes turn right to go left.

  15. ClickClickNow says:

I think this chart makes NASCAR look too complicated.

  16. cowdoctor says:

not exactly accurate, there are road coarses. failed graph *pppppppfffttttt*

  17. cowdoctor says:

not true, road courses failed graph *ppppfffftttt*

  18. Haha says:

Making Nascar look even more ridiculous than it already did by getting a bunch of fans to get angry over nothing, you’re doin it right.

  19. Nick says:

You nascar fans are a funny lot.

  20. Duke says:

Look! They’re makin a left turn!

    Dunham rocks

  21. John L says:

WOW! I had no idea that this graph would create such a fervor. I did not intend to insult anyone – NASCAR fans, drivers, pit crews, window washers, nor their families.
I did consider the right-hand turns of exiting the pit and the ill-fated right-hand turns of a crash and thought about making the right side slightly greater than zero. I also knew about the two road-course races. I am, in fact, a NASCAR/auto racing fan – actually I am just a sports junkie (yes, NASCAR is a sport – nuf said). As a graphjam fan, I thought just keep it simple!!

Thanks to all my graphjam fans,
    John L

PS Is there a graphjam hall of fame?

    • Ovamiat says:

If you considered it, then WHY THE HELL DIDN’T YOU ADD THE RIGHT TURNS?!?!?!?!?!?

Especially when for Marcos Ambrose, who’s Australian, the race is always going BACKWARDS since where he comes from, on oval tracks they only turn RIGHT?

      HUH? HUH? HUH?

  22. Clinton says:

The first place I went was the Robin Williams joke:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=XwzHWO0G1nY (at about 8:55)

BTW John, I LOVE this graph.

  23. someguy says:

    love this graph.

and don’t get started on the “rest of the season” if the “superbowl of nascar” is not worth watching then I doubt the rest of the season is any good either.

  24. Petit Merdeux says:

The graph was funny. So were the comments of anal-retentive NASCAR fans!

  25. Dave Colvin says:

    This is funny…

  26. anonymous says:

    fake

  27. T-Rey says:

Argument summary: don’t piss of racing fans?

actually auto racing is very tough on the body endurance-wise, and it’s comparably more dangerous than football even, sure it, like all sports isn’t appealing to everyone, but it still is quite physically trying

  28. Skuny says:

    Chart Win!
