    Amen to that

  2. markislav says:

    oh how i wish this wasn’t true…

  3. Thufir says:

    AMEN!

  4. Blarg says:

What are you talking about? That show where you pick a girlfriend by taking the dyslexic mother’s half cousin’s daughter’s boss’s aunt’s legal executor of her will’s dog for a walk and sniffing it’s crap to see which one smells the worst is an EXCELLENT show, a true marvel of cinematography. By no means should it fall under the category “other crap.”

  5. Rachel of Cyberia says:

    Same thing with VH-1, too.

    • jwdoke says:

Hey, does anybody else remember when VH-1 was lame because of the music it played as opposed to the music that MTV was playing at the time? Late ’80s-early ’90s?!?

      • Bostonian says:

Yes. But about five years later VH-1 effectively became MTV when MTV stopped being about music and started being about lame reality shows. Suddenly the videos on VH-1 got decent. But eventually MTV noticed that they had accidentally created a compelling music channel again, and decided to fill it up with fashion shows and other junk. The decline of MTV is a tragedy that happened twice.

        • Fisty says:

          You’re not just whistling Dixie.

        • Mickey Dubya says:

          You speak the truth!!!!

And i have a feeling it is going to happen for a third time…..
Ever heard of VH1 Classic??? I watch music videos on there (its mostly classic rock stuff). I can guarantee you it will all be gone in 3 years tops

  6. jluve82 says:

It’s so terribly sad, but true. There was a time when MTV, VH1, and BET were the cool thing because you got to see music videos all frikken day long. Now the channels are so full of BS that I don’t even flip to them anymore. Sad, sad day for all of us. It used to be Video killed the radio star, now it’s MTV killed the Video star.

    • bnonymous says:

And when they do happen to throw in a video or two, they’re crap.

      • Khaaaaaaan says:

Not only that, but I don’t give a f#$% what Crissy from Wahoo, NE thinks about the video, much less do I want her opinion in the middle of the f@$%ing song, nullifying any hopes of fully enjoying/hating it.

Pop-up Video… now that was how to roll. At least it was comical and was usually an older, well-known or pretty bad video such that I wasn’t going to miss much while reading the pop-ups.

        • jluve82 says:

did you see the one for the Rick Asley video? I loled until it hurt.

        • Athene says:

That’s why I love having Digital Cable and VH1 Classic. They Pop-Up video all the time!

          • d0nu7 says:

Yeah, VH1 Classic is the best channel for music that I have right now. They have these awesome Classic albums shows and stuff that are very interesting.

    • Catcat says:

Actually it should be MTV killed itself with crap. Also MTV is now a massive FAIL!!!!

  7. Stephanie says:

    So true.

  8. Nick Gill says:

That would have been a GREAT name for this graph: MTV killed the Video Star

  9. D. Renee T. says:

ya’ll got that right! it a shame MTV and all the others went stupid…

  10. Dani says:

Projected? MTV still plays music videos? I’m so confused…

  11. Joseph says:

To quote Dream Theater: A daily dose of eMpTyV will flush your mind right down the drain.

  12. Justin says:

So so true. Let’s see, how long is a music video? 3? Maybe 4 minutes? And the stupid TRL show can’t play the effing thing in its entirety? Why the heck do I have to get up at 0′dark-thirty if I want to see an actual music video played on MUSIC TELEVISION?

  13. John says:

BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD! HOW CAN YOU ALL FORGET?!?!11?!

  14. Taylor says:

Kind of like how MTV2 was supposed to be for music videos after MTV turned to crap? Eventually they’re going to run out of channels.

    • Jackson says:

Wel no, this is a show that is actually ON MTV, not its own channel. But I still don’t have very hight hopes.

    • Nathan says:

Why not make an MTV3 to broadcast videos if MTV and MTV2 spew crap all day. B
But IF that ever happens, eventually I can see MTV3 pulling the same ploy as MTV and MTV2. Mindless programming completely irrelevant to music videos.

  15. JB says:

    I want my MTV……back.

  16. Yasser says:

I don’t know who interpreted the graph but it seems like other graph is the exact reflection of the videos

  17. Reiner says:

Even right for MTV Germany. :(

  18. dracozny says:

I still watch muchmusic every now and then but lately I just listen to internet radio or XM

  19. Mike says:

I don’t watch TV at all. Nothing but a load of BS after BS after BS. The IQ level of the average human is and will continue to dwindle as long as they keep airing mindless garbage. Kids eat this stuff up and it shapes and forms their opinions on EVERYTHING!! Most of it is subliminal so they will never know they are being fu*ked.

    • Beezle McNasty says:

Everything you’re saying is true, but there are exceptions:
Avatar, Planet Earth, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, Flight of the Conchords, Curb Your Enthusiasm and a handful of other diamonds in the rough.

That said, the best way to get this stuff certainly isn’t via the mind-draining tube, all cut up to hell and with billions of commercial breaks.

None of these ore on network TV either; go figure…

      • sam says:

All those shows are on The Movie Network. check out there site and your see when they plat uncut and commercial free

    • Dustin says:

You are so right it makes me sick! The General public is too dumb now-a-days to notice this anymore.

  20. fudabi says:

What? Least there is hope for MTV2. Oh wait…

  21. dj.ik says:

    couldn’t agree more….

people really don’t care about music videos anymore, probably because you can only copy so much from a music video …

programs, documentarys and all that other MTV crap makes it much easier to learn how to be cool…

  22. Frank says:

Stopped watching mtv years ago. Seems every music video under the sun can be found on youtube nowadays. The DMCA takedown notices must have been misfiled it seems. Sound quality is so-and-so, but it makes a very passable party-jukebox.

  23. tantheman says:

    What is the data source?

  24. radar says:

MTV in Europe is way better then MTV US with it’crap:) but they based their shedulle on viewers research and acording to that people want to see reality shows, music videos are on their website.

  25. two says:

in Europe there are digital mtv channels dedicated on different music types,
like for eg. MTV TWO is for Rock and Alternative and it’s focus olny on music
Here mtv is still music televison.
Main channel MTV is like in US. focus on entertainment crap.

  26. Marty says:

I don’t consider Jackass to be other crap. In fact it was hilarious and an amazing show. Groundbreaking. And no I’m not an MTV addict nor do I watch a lot of TV. I prefer to educate myself nevertheless I’m tired of threads where everything is defined in absolute terms. A little differetiation would be appropriate

  27. Johnjo says:

MTV in Europe over the years.

creative, creative, expressive, creative, globalisation, centralization, controlist, controlist, controlist, controlist controlist controlist.

  28. Josh Townsend says:

MTV rocked back in the day. I remember the day it launched. For the first week we sat up all night every night watching. I’ll never forget it. Now, MTV is a reality chick show. Sucks.

  29. 80s says:

In 80’s there such channels as Sky Channel and Music Box…..
    Full of GOOD music!

  30. Jason Godsey says:

I stopped watching MTV when they dropped Headbangers Ball.

Before that, I loved USA’s Night Flight

    Jason

    • mtpagan says:

The fall of MTV started the moment Riki Rachtman cut his hair :(

Soon after, they cut all the good shows they had (Remote Control, Liquid Television, AMP) and replaced all with the crap they have on today…such fond memories from back then…so sad how pathetic it has become.

  31. joseph says:

all owned by VIACOM, the big corporate is trying to dumb down the american people. and thats the truth.

  32. kenny says:

get mtv jams, always plays music videos

  33. Rick Cain says:

    NEXT!

    I love that show!!!

  34. jenny says:

Painful but true, I remember when MTV hardly had any ads at all, and only a rare break between videos, which were still cool, because we werent all jaded to death from seeing 1 billion videos… I was 13 when MTV started up, and it was pretty great in the 80’s. Now that I’m 40, I really don’t have to care if it sucks!

  35. Marcelo Abans says:

MTV Still rules, just to a different generation. I loved MTV then I turned 18, moved out and went to discover different music. If you find yourself saying any derivative of “…. Back In the day ….” then you should take a good hard long look behind you. See that hill? Yeah, you are over it..

  36. Furanku says:

I remember my last hope, when MTV X was still out, that was like the answer to all my prayers, pure rock, and metal the whole day long, no interuptions! Untill one sad, sad day it changed to MTV Jams I was like WTF?!!!!!! And so another MTV kill (u_u )

  37. Alvaro says:

    YO! MTV RAPS. jajajaja

I love that take a retarded families girl out to a trailer park shindig and see who gets Sifilis first show.. jajajaja

Gimme back Head Banger Brawl, Gimme back 6 hours of non-stop video. I don’t buy new music ’cause there’s no where to find new music any more. Radio shows don´t say the name of the song and band they just played, and well TV doesn’t play music anymore.

But then we all saw this coming some about a decade ago, when Mat Pinfield disappeared and all of the sudden that no talent hack (can’t remember his name. Still alive, doing some late late show that blows) was the big thing on MTV, and they justified music with TRL. WTF IS THAT?????

I effectively cancelled all my subscriptions to mtv and the others about 3 years ago.
    NO HOPE!

  38. Syd says:

Imagine that ESPN had decided that “jocks like to watch other jocks on TV…getting drunk and stuff…”, and imagine that Real World appeared on ESPN instead of MTV, and that they eventually phased out sports coverage.

You would say “they couldn’t have done that…it wouldn’t even make sense…they would lose true sports fans…replacing them with jock types who don’t actually play sports or care so much about sports…it would ruin ESPN.”

    Yeah, that’s what MTV did.

  39. I TOTALLY Agree, and have had this theory for years.
Where is all the goddamn MUSIC* on MUSIC TELEVISION???

*You know, where people write their own music&lyrics & play instruments & sing at the same time? (dance optional)

  40. TheChad says:

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!? This graph has NOTHING to do with viewership, is simply shows the amount of airtime that video’s actually get…ASS.

  41. Dan says:

    Moron TV…’nuff said.

  42. Nick says:

This is truly a sad trend, and one not just apparent in the “pop” channels. Have you seen Discovery or TLC lately? They are inundated with crap, whereas they used to have interesting and thought provoking material they are both now largely about interior decorating, “men’s men” doing some overly dangerous jobs, oh and midgets, can’t forget midgets.

  43. Scott in the SOLO says:

No kidding, now it’s loaded with those vapid bitches from The Hills and their ilk. MTV blows!

  44. jjmblue7 says:

And you gotta love how ALL the reality shows (with the exception of True Life, a documentary) are so obviously and so POORLY scripted and acted.

*The Hills Chick: “Oh look at me I just woke up from yet another night of heavy drinking and anonymous sex with a cookie-cutter-cute guy and my makeup is still perfect and not a hair is out of place. I’ll call in sick (hungover) to work and not face a single consequence, recovering just in time to go out, get drunk, and gossip all over again, just like the real life of the average American teen! Teeheehee!”
