The problem is that a lot of people in the world don’t know who Lil’ John is (aside from a Robin Hood character). Yes, he may be known in America, but we’ve hardly heard of him in Australia (and I imagine that his lack of global reknown is more widespread than that, too).

Amusing graph, but it fails with the Lil’ John reference. “Rapper” might have been a better, more easily recognised result.

Li’l John isn’t terribly specific. If anyone’s seen Dave Chappelle (spelling?) in the past few years, then you know it. Also, he was ALL over everyone’s remixes for a while. Granted, I am only 25, so he’s part of my pop culture demographic.

I had no problem understanding the Venn diagram. My difficulty with this one came from the fact that I had no idea who lil john was. Most of the charts on this site aren’t about “pop culture,” but something so specific that you either know it or you don’t.

As a high-school teacher(13 years) I am depressed that so many don’t understand Venn diagrams. This is a VERY straightforward and clever one. I am doubly depressed by the English teacher. There is not a lot going on, just addition!

I’m an English/Reading teacher for high schoolers and even I had problems with this one. There’s just a lot going on. Then again, I, unlike most you here, had problems with graphic organizers in school; however, I do plan on printing this one and making my students figure it out next year. It’s a great way to introduce teens to Venn diagrams.

No it does NOT include the middle piece because if it did there would be no reason to have a section that is just Boy and Diamonds. The whole point of the Venn Diagram is a categorizing tool. I repeat that if Lil John were Boy, Diamonds, and Girl he’d be in the middle with marriage. Only the three overlapping circles are named, Marriage is simply an item that is classified as being present when Boy, Girl and Diamonds overlap. Just as Lil John is an item that is present when Boy and Diamonds overlap, hence it’s placement outside the middle section.

Sorry, Joolz The areas of the Venn diagram are differentiated by the overlaps of the ORIGINAL SETS ONLY (Boy, Girl, Diamond).

Lil’ John is not the name of a set, but an object in intersection of the sets Boy and Diamond, so cannot be not included in the intersection of Boy, Girl and Diamond.

Check out Copi and Cohen for a great introduction to logic.

Usually when people are that condescending, they make sure they are correct first.

The diagram is ambiguous enough that it could just be the intersection of Boy, Diamond and ‘not Girl’ that is labelled Lil’ John. Give the creator the benefit of the doubt.

No, you aren’t understanding them, nor are some other people. Jason is right. Lil John, whoever that is (but i get the boy + diamond reference) is the almond-shaped piece where boy and diamond overlap, INCLUDING the middle piece where marriage is. Marriage is the overlap of the three almond shapes, or Lil John, best friend, and couple.

Think of the Venn diagram with colors instead. Boy is blue, girl is red, diamonds are yellow. Lil John is therefore green, or blue AND yellow. Couple is purple, and best friend is orange. Marriage is black, or blue AND red AND yellow, or green AND purple AND orange. If marriage (black) excluded Lil John (green), it wouldn’t be black. it would be some other color.

Get it now?

No, no, no. Couple, Lil John, and Best Friends are not included in Marriage. If they were they would be in the center of the graph with the word Marriage. Couple is only in the part where Boy and Girl overlap, just as Lil John is only where Boy and Diamonds overlap and Best Friends is only where Girl and Diamonds overlap. This is why Venn Diagrams are so misused on this site, no one seems to understand them!

Really? Girls, Diamonds, and Boys are all related by Marriage. Girls are related to diamonds, because they are a “girls best friend.” Boys are related to diamonds by Lil’ John, or any other rapper that likes “bling.” And boys and girls are related to by being a couple.
