It is irony.

"Mr. play it safe was afraid to fly, he packed up his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye. He waited he whole damn life just to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down, he thought well isnt this nice."

thats irony, because he was afraid to fly because he thought the plane he rode would crash, and the only time he ever rode a plane, it crashed.

Hardly ANYONE knows what irony means. There should be a bar graph here of people who use the word "irony" and people who actually use it correctly.

Oh, come on people. The song is partially ironic, I don't care if Kevin can spell or not, I agree with him. Why are you all arguing about it? It's a title of a song, it doesn't have to make sense.

as stated earlier in the comments, rain on your wedding day is ironic because superstition says it's good luck, but who would really want rain?? it's ironic that something unpleasant would be good luck...

hmmm I think some of it's ironic... just depending how you look at it... ten thousand spoons... not one knife... thats all you needed and out of 10,000! ... I think thats kind of ironic. the plane crash... well obviously the guy at one point expected it but if he got on the plane eventually I would assume I changed his mind... I think it could be a form of irony. the lottery thing too... I mean 98 years old, wins the lotto and dies the very next day... it might be unfortunate , but thats effing ironic too... I don't know... maybe I'm wrong, but all those events are pretty unexpected... the rain on the wedding day thing... ok thats just unfortunate... not ironic really but I can see some slight twists of irony in allot of those...

Actually, the second verse ("He tried to play it safe, was afraid to fly ... And as the plane crashed down, he thought, 'Well isn't this nice'") is a good example of dramatic irony.

The rest of the song, however, is not ironic, which can also count as dramatic irony because an unsuspecting Alanis Morissette thinks it is.

Your English is perfect. It's better than mine. I think Kevin just isn't
very smart. Although, English is extremely complicated. It's so
complicated, people who speak it AS THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE
have a class in school to learn how to speak it throughout middle
school and high school, and optionally in college.

I would sugest it would be better to use the OED as this is considered to be the standard for the English language. You also seem to have missed out on various other types of irony such as dramatic irony etc.

As a DJ, this song has irked me for years... I hate it when people request this and I'm forced to play it. (Of course, then I mock it the entire time... which is fun!)

Maybe Kevin's first language isn't english. It's not because he made a spelling mistake, or typing mistake, that he has no idea of the concept of irony.
For example, I'm Belgian, My first language is Dutch, after that I learned French, and English is only my third language, so I'm bound to make a mistake from time to time. Yet so, we do know irony in non-english speaking parts of the world.

Thanks.

For example, I’m Belgian, My first language is Dutch, after that I learned French, and English is only my third language, so I’m bound to make a mistake from time to time. Yet so, we do know irony in non-english speaking parts of the world.

Thanks.

Really? Virbal? If you can't spell "verbal" the odds are good that you have no idea what is and is not ironic.

"the second is the verbal irony of saying 'Well, isn’t this nice'."

That actually is irony. but it's the only one.

You know what's ironic? All of these stupid arguments about whether or not this song is ironic. It is old, we have all heard it before... ad nauseam. This entire thread is ironic... oh wait, no, nevermind, the word I was looking for was MORONIC!

"RE: Plane Crash…
Being afraid of being in a plane crash and then being in a plane crash = NOT ironic. It is exactly what he expected. IRONIC = because he’s afriad of a plane crash, he takes a train; train crashes."

Even more ironic: the train he takes gets crushed by a crashing plane.

Re: Rain on Wedding Day...
NOT ironic. If you don't consider the fact that it might rain on your wedding day, you're just unprepared & it's unfortunate.
IRONIC = You really want an outdoor wedding but you worry about rain. So, you get married in a banquet hall. It winds up being a beautiful day, but the sprinkler system inside the banquet hall goes off and soaks your wedding.

The definition of irony being the opposite of what's expected... I suppose that's a lesser-known use of the word (as "ak" explained above... she/he knows a lot more about the subject than I), but it is definitely not what was taught in literature class (sounds like that was dramatic irony?). I still think Alanis didn't know what the heck she was talking about. :P I think there is more to it than the dictionary definitions are conveying... maybe connotation vs denotation?

Since I will need a reference to back up my claims, Dictionary.com tells me the following:
Irony
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Which is pretty much the whole song. So now most of you have tried to sound intelligent, with this contempt for classic song-writing, and you've done nothing more than EPIC'Failed. I think Miss Morissette is owed an apology.

Who'd have thought that 30 seconds in Google Docs could create so much fuss?

Also - no, Alanis Morissette did not intentionally write this so that the entire song would be 'ironic', in that it contained no irony. She's not that clever. Nice try though.

A better dictionary would also explain that dramatic irony covers the incongruities between what is expected and what actually happens, and situational and cosmic irony are when one's actions have a result other than the one hoped for, or when the harsh realities of the world come into conflict with human desires. Comic and verbal ironies are not the only types in existence.

Kevin T. The title of the graph is "Use a dictionary. Please."

Seeing as how you clearly did not, let me do the work for you. As defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, "irony" is "Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended: madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker."

As someone much more well-spoken than I once said "To be positive is to be wrong at the top of one's lungs." I believe that saying applies to your comment.

There are two things wrong with this graph.

First, there are at least two parts that are ironic, the first being the plane crashing after the guy never got on a plane all his life, and the second is the virbal irony of saying "Well, isn't this nice".

Second, they're all ironic if you're optomistic and assume things tend to go well. They're fitting if you're pessimistic. They're only "unfortunate" if you're a realist who doesn't believe in that sort of irony.
