  1. b-fent says:

Finally, someone said it! Ever since high school my friends and I have wanted to re-title that song “Ain’t that some sh*t”, because irony it was not.

    • Vita says:

      Yes!
      God it pisses me off.
I’m glad there are other poeple who think that :P

    • Ben says:

      It is irony.

“Mr. play it safe was afraid to fly, he packed up his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye. He waited he whole damn life just to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down, he thought well isnt this nice.”

thats irony, because he was afraid to fly because he thought the plane he rode would crash, and the only time he ever rode a plane, it crashed.

  2. Ross says:

    Yeah, isn’t that ironic?

  3. Squee says:

But… Isn’t it Ironic that none of the “ironies” in the song are in fact not ironic at all?

  4. Kir says:

This could NOT be funnier! I am so glad someone else thinks the same thing – thanks INA!

  5. jilly says:

    Yes!! This graph is awesome.

Rain on your wedding day isn’t ironic. Living in Seattle and having a wedding in Arizona which gets rained on… now THAT’S ironic.

  6. Gowerly says:

Well, the entire song is ironic, containing, as it does, not the slightest bit of irony, yet calling itself ironic.

  7. Saxon says:

Not to nag, but shouldn’t it be unfortunate coincidence rather than circumstance?

  8. Kevin T. says:

There are two things wrong with this graph.

First, there are at least two parts that are ironic, the first being the plane crashing after the guy never got on a plane all his life, and the second is the virbal irony of saying “Well, isn’t this nice”.

Second, they’re all ironic if you’re optomistic and assume things tend to go well. They’re fitting if you’re pessimistic. They’re only “unfortunate” if you’re a realist who doesn’t believe in that sort of irony.

    • Andrew says:

Really? Virbal? If you can’t spell “verbal” the odds are good that you have no idea what is and is not ironic.

      • aLiTa says:

Maybe Kevin’s first language isn’t english. It’s not because he made a spelling mistake, or typing mistake, that he has no idea of the concept of irony.
For example, I’m Belgian, My first language is Dutch, after that I learned French, and English is only my third language, so I’m bound to make a mistake from time to time. Yet so, we do know irony in non-english speaking parts of the world.

        Thanks.

        • Mike says:

Your English is perfect. It’s better than mine. I think Kevin just isn’t
very smart. Although, English is extremely complicated. It’s so
complicated, people who speak it AS THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE
have a class in school to learn how to speak it throughout middle
school and high school, and optionally in college.

  9. Lins says:

The song IS Ironic because it contains no irony.
    Durrrrrr.

  10. Joe says:

To anyone who says “It’s ironic b/c there’s no irony in it,” I say: that’s just a lame cop-out. The truth is, she didn’t know what irony was. That excuse is just damage control.

    • itwasadarkandstormynight says:

Hardly ANYONE knows what irony means. There should be a bar graph here of people who use the word “irony” and people who actually use it correctly.

  11. Kian says:

Kevin T. The title of the graph is “Use a dictionary. Please.”

Seeing as how you clearly did not, let me do the work for you. As defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, “irony” is “Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended: madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker.”

As someone much more well-spoken than I once said “To be positive is to be wrong at the top of one’s lungs.” I believe that saying applies to your comment.

    • DANIMAL says:

“the second is the verbal irony of saying ‘Well, isn’t this nice’.”

That actually is irony. but it’s the only one.

    • H says:

I would sugest it would be better to use the OED as this is considered to be the standard for the English language. You also seem to have missed out on various other types of irony such as dramatic irony etc.

  12. ak says:

A better dictionary would also explain that dramatic irony covers the incongruities between what is expected and what actually happens, and situational and cosmic irony are when one’s actions have a result other than the one hoped for, or when the harsh realities of the world come into conflict with human desires. Comic and verbal ironies are not the only types in existence.

  13. Actually..... says:

Rain on your wedding day is ironic, because superstition says that is good luck for a happy marriage.

  14. Ina says:

Who’d have thought that 30 seconds in Google Docs could create so much fuss?

Also – no, Alanis Morissette did not intentionally write this so that the entire song would be ‘ironic’, in that it contained no irony. She’s not that clever. Nice try though.

  15. Since I will need a reference to back up my claims, Dictionary.com tells me the following:
    Irony
    5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Which is pretty much the whole song. So now most of you have tried to sound intelligent, with this contempt for classic song-writing, and you’ve done nothing more than EPIC’Failed. I think Miss Morissette is owed an apology.

  16. shunt says:

    “Finally, someone said it!”

someone did back when it came out, his name is Ed Byrne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT1TVSTkAXg

  17. jinx says:

    RE: Plane Crash…
Being afraid of being in a plane crash and then being in a plane crash = NOT ironic. It is exactly what he expected. IRONIC = because he’s afriad of a plane crash, he takes a train; train crashes.

    Re: Rain on Wedding Day…
NOT ironic. If you don’t consider the fact that it might rain on your wedding day, you’re just unprepared & it’s unfortunate.
IRONIC = You really want an outdoor wedding but you worry about rain. So, you get married in a banquet hall. It winds up being a beautiful day, but the sprinkler system inside the banquet hall goes off and soaks your wedding.

The definition of irony being the opposite of what’s expected… I suppose that’s a lesser-known use of the word (as “ak” explained above… she/he knows a lot more about the subject than I), but it is definitely not what was taught in literature class (sounds like that was dramatic irony?). I still think Alanis didn’t know what the heck she was talking about. :P I think there is more to it than the dictionary definitions are conveying… maybe connotation vs denotation?

  18. go says:

    “RE: Plane Crash…
Being afraid of being in a plane crash and then being in a plane crash = NOT ironic. It is exactly what he expected. IRONIC = because he’s afriad of a plane crash, he takes a train; train crashes.”

Even more ironic: the train he takes gets crushed by a crashing plane.

  19. jike says:

the only ironic thing about ironic is that there’s no irony… alanis herself says so, on iTunes Originals.

  20. JustSomeGuy says:

You know what’s ironic? All of these stupid arguments about whether or not this song is ironic. It is old, we have all heard it before… ad nauseam. This entire thread is ironic… oh wait, no, nevermind, the word I was looking for was MORONIC!

  21. DANIMAL says:

this is all beside the point- she did it that way cause”isn’t that an unfortunate circumstance” doesn’t exactly roll off the tounge

  22. Matthew says:

As a DJ, this song has irked me for years… I hate it when people request this and I’m forced to play it. (Of course, then I mock it the entire time… which is fun!)

  23. xorsyst says:

I dunno – I think 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife is pretty ironic. Agreed the rest aren’t though.

  24. Sam says:

    Gotta love Ed Byrne xD

  25. The L says:

Actually, the second verse (“He tried to play it safe, was afraid to fly … And as the plane crashed down, he thought, ‘Well isn’t this nice’”) is a good example of dramatic irony.

The rest of the song, however, is not ironic, which can also count as dramatic irony because an unsuspecting Alanis Morissette thinks it is.

  26. LORI says:

YOU PEOPLE SWEAR YOU’RE ALL ENGLISH TEACHERS…. GET A LIFE!

  27. coco.coco says:

    uhm..

why is there a crazy person in the back of her car?

  28. Nathan says:

Isn’t it Ironic that a song called Ironic contains no Irony?

Those Canadians are a tricky bunch.

  29. Jesse says:

hmmm I think some of it’s ironic… just depending how you look at it… ten thousand spoons… not one knife… thats all you needed and out of 10,000! … I think thats kind of ironic. the plane crash… well obviously the guy at one point expected it but if he got on the plane eventually I would assume I changed his mind… I think it could be a form of irony. the lottery thing too… I mean 98 years old, wins the lotto and dies the very next day… it might be unfortunate , but thats effing ironic too… I don’t know… maybe I’m wrong, but all those events are pretty unexpected… the rain on the wedding day thing… ok thats just unfortunate… not ironic really but I can see some slight twists of irony in allot of those…

    • stuff says:

as stated earlier in the comments, rain on your wedding day is ironic because superstition says it’s good luck, but who would really want rain?? it’s ironic that something unpleasant would be good luck…

  30. Kris says:

Oh, come on people. The song is partially ironic, I don’t care if Kevin can spell or not, I agree with him. Why are you all arguing about it? It’s a title of a song, it doesn’t have to make sense.
